`
`BACKGROUNB
`
`{titling
`
`This invention relates tn spark ignition gasoline engines utilizing an antiknnek agent
`
`which is a liquid fuel with a higher octane number than gasoline such 213 ethanol tn improve
`
`engine efficiency.
`
`{@633}
`
`it is known that the efficiency ofspnrlc ignitinn (SI) gasoline engines can be increased
`
`by high enmpressinn ratio nperatinn and particularly by engine dawnsizing. The engine
`
`downsizing is made pessi‘nle by the use 0f substantial pressure beosting from either
`
`turbocharging or supercharging. Such pressure boasting makes it possible to obtain the same
`
`performance in a significantly smaller engine. E, .i. Stokes, 61521., “A Gasnline Engine
`
`Concept For lmpreved Fuel Economy The Lean—Enost System,” SAE Paper 20% —0 1-2902
`
`The use {if these techniques in increase engine ef iciency, however, is limited by the (inset of
`
`engine knock. Knock is»; the undesired detonation of fuel and can severely damage an engine.
`
`if
`
`knock can be prevented; then high cempressien relics operation and high pressure. hensting can he
`
`used tn increase engine efficiency by up to twenty—five percent.
`
`{Gillie} Gciane number represents the resistance nfa fiiel r0 lmeeking but the use of higher
`
`octane gasoline Only mndestly alleviates the tendency to kneel; For example, the difference
`
`between regular and premium gasoline is typically six octane numbers, That is significantly less
`
`than is needed to realize hilly the efficiency benefits of high compression ratio or turbocharged
`
`operation. There is thus a need for a practical means for achieving a much higher level of octane
`
`enhancement so that engines. can be operated much more efficiently.

`liltiilSl
`
`it is known to replace a portion ofgasolinc with small amounts; ofcthanol added at the
`
`refinery, Ethanol has a blending octane nnmher (t‘rl‘l) of 1 it) (versus $5 for premium gasoline)
`
`(sec lid. Heywood, “internal Combustion Enginc Fundamcnlals,“ Mci‘rrow llill, lifilili, p. 477)
`
`and is also attractive becausc it is a renewable energy, biomani—dcrivcd fuel, but the small
`
`amounts of ethanol that have heretofore bccn added to gasoline have had a relatively small
`
`impact on engine performance. Ethanol is much more expensive: than gasoline and the amount
`
`ot‘ethanol that is readily available is much Smaller than that or" gasolinc because ofthc relatively
`
`limitcd amount of biomass that is available for its production. An object oFthc present invcnlion
`
`in to minimize the amount of ethanol or othcr antiknoch agent that is used to achieve a given
`
`level ofcngine efficiency increasac. By restricting the use of cthanol to thc relatively small
`
`fraction of time in an opcroting cycle when it in necdcd to prcvcnt knock in 8. higher load regime
`
`and by minimizing its use at these limos, the amount of ethanol that is required can hc limitcd to
`
`a relatively small fraction ot‘thc iiiel used by the spark ignition gasolinc enginc.

`lthlilél
`
`in one aspect, the invention in n fuel management systcrn for efficicnt operation of a
`
`spark ignition gasolinc cnginc including a sourcc clan antilinock agent such as cthonol. An
`
`injector directly injects the ethanol into a cylinder of the engine and a fuel managcmcnt system
`
`controls injection of the antillnock agent into the cylinder to control knock with minimum use of
`
`the antiknock agent. A preferred antilrnoclc agcnt is cthanol. Ethanol has a high heat of
`
`vaporization so that thcrc is substantial cooling of the air-fuel charge to the cylinder when it is
`
`injectcd directly into thc cnginc. This cooling cfl‘cct rcduccs the octane requirement of the
`
`engine by a considerable amount in addition to the improvement in knock resistance from the
`
`rclativcly high octane numbcr ofcthanol. Mothanol. tertiary butyl alcohol, MlBE. ETBE, and

`
`in one embodiment the injectors stratify the ethanol to provide non—uniform deposition
`
`within a cylinder. For example, the ethanol may be injected nroxiinate to the cylinder walls and
`
`swirl can create a ring of ethanol near the wallg.
`
`[littllill
`
`in another embodiment of this aspect ot‘the invention, the system includes a measure
`
`ot‘thc amount ofthc antihnock agent such as ethanol in the source containing the antiknock agent
`
`to control turbocharging, supercharging or spark retard when the amount of ethanol is low.
`
`thttltll
`
`The direct injection of ethanol provides substantially a 13°C drop in temperature for
`
`every ten percent of fuel energy province by ethanol. An instantaneous octane enhancement of
`
`at least 4 octane numbers may be obtained for every 20 percent of the engine’s energy coming
