Frequently Asked Questions

What is the satisfaction guarantee?

The purpose of Docket Alarm is for legal research and to get timely updates of legal filings. We make every effort to ensure accurate delivery of documents and alerts. If a document does not exist in our database, but should, we will refund any fees associated with finding the document.

See our terms of service for more details.

What other charges are there?

For flat rate accounts, you pay PACER fees for Federal Courts and Bankruptcies and certain state courts. When accessing state court documents that incur a charge, you will be asked to confirm document purchases.

For Pay-As-You-Go accounts, all fees are included, you pay nothing extra. However, some State court documents are unavailable. Also, analytics are not available for Pay-As-You-Go members.

Am I charged for each document?

For Pay-As-You-Go accounts, yes, you are charged for each document, whether you download it or just view it. After the first view, all subsequent access and downloads are free.

Flat-Rate accounts have no per-document access fees, except for PACER fees discussed above.

How does tracking work?

When you track a docket, we check the court multiple times per day to see if any new filings have been posted. If there is anything new, we email you and can attach the new filings to the email.

You control how often we check the docket. For attorneys who need fast updates, we check the docket continuously, over a dozen times a day. We also have a special stock trader alert (not included in flat rate) for even more speed.

What is the billing commitment?

No commitment! We really mean it! Just switch to Pay-As-You-Go and monthly fees stop immediately. Large firms that want stable pricing can inquire about longer term contracts.

How will I be billed?

We email both an Excel and PDF receipt listing each line-item that incurred a fee. If you utilize billing codes, the line-items are sorted by code. This makes sorting bills by matter and billing to the client easy.

What is the minimum seat requirement?

Law firms with 10 or more attorneys or corporations that utilize litigation data across the enterprise may be subject to a minimum seat policy.

This policy is tailored to support larger businesses managing complex workflows and collaboration. If you are unsure whether your firm or business may qualify contact sales.

Are there developer APIs?

You bet! Our API is perfect for developers integrating court data into their apps. We even offer heavy API users bulk access rates. Read more on our developer API here. Happy hacking!

If you're not a programmer but want to integrate court data into apps, we have an option that requires no programming. Read about our Zapier integration here.

When will I be billed?

Flat-Fee: Your monthly subscription fee is charged when you sign up, and every month on the signup anniversary. If PACER fees are accumulated during the month, they are billed at the end of the billing period in which they were accumulated.

Pay-As-You-Go: Your balance is charged when it first exceeds $20, and then again for the remaining amount one month after signing up. For example, if you accumulate $30 in charges right after signing up, we first charge $20, and then $10 one month later.

We sometimes bill more frequently if we see excessive activity on an account.

How do I cancel?

For the Pay-As-You-Go plan, there is nothing to cancel. We only charge when you use Docket Alarm, so if you do not login or perform research, you will not be charged.

To cancel the Flat-Fee plan, change your account type to Pay-As-You-Go, and you will not be charged monthly access fees again.

Are there any limitations on use?

You may not systematically scrape our database unless you have purchased access to the API.

Under The Fair Credit Reporting Act (15 U.S.C sec 1681), you may not use Docket Alarm to determine an individual's eligibility for (A) credit or insurance to be used primarily for personal, family, or household purposes or (B) employment purposes.
