`
`Plaintiff Arendi S.A.R.L. provides this
`
`Technical Tutorial for the matters pending before this
`
`court.
`
`Arendi S.A.R.L., or Arendi for short,
`
`is a
`
`communications technology company based in Luxembourg.
`
`Arendi was founded in 1994 by Atle Hedloy and Violette
`
`Heger—Hedloy.
`
`Arendi's initial focus was the development of
`
`software applications that facilitated the handling of
`
`address and contact information. Arendi's OneButton
`
`and Everybody.net software modules provided users with
`
`access to local and remote databases containing contact
`
`and other information.
`
`Arendi, however, was not
`
`immune to the effects
`
`of the bursting of the dot—com bubble in the early
`
`20008. Presently, Arendi's primary business involves
`
`licensing and enforcing its intellectual property in
`
`the United States and abroad.
`
`To date, Arendi has
`
`earned millions of dollars in licensing revenue.
`
`Atle Hedloy is the sole named inventor on the,
`
`patents—in—suit. Mr. Hedloy graduated from Harvard
`
`college in 1983 with a Bachelor's degree in computer

`
`science, also from Harvard,
`
`in that same year. After
`
`working as a software engineer for Convergent
`
`Technologies in Silicon Valley and a project manager
`
`for NCR Norway, Mr. Hedloy returned to Harvard and
`
`received his MBA in 1988.
`
`Since then, Mr. Hedloy has
`
`been a consultant, entrepreneur, and innovator.
`
`In these cases Arendi accuses defendants of
`
`infringing four patents: U.S. Patent No. 7,917,843,
`
`U.S. Patent No. 8,306,993, U.S. Patent No. 7,496,854,
`
`and U.S. Patent No. 7,921,356.
`
`The —843, —854, and
`
`—356 patents are continuation patents of a patent
`
`application filed November 1998 and are named Method,
`
`System and Computer Readable Medium for Addressing
`
`Handling from a Computer Program.
`
`The —993 patent is
`
`the continuation of a related patent named Method,
`
`System and Computer Readable Medium for Addressing
`
`Handling from an Operating System and has a priority
`
`date of September 3rd, 1999.
`
`The patents—in—suit provide novel methods and
`
`systems for handling and exchanging information between
`
`computer programs.
`
`As
`
`the patent specification states,
`
`computer users needed a method and system to facilitate
`
`retrieval of information from a source,
`
`such as a
`
`database,
`
`for use in a separate program,
`
`such as a word

`
`Furthermore,
`
`the information in the database is
`
`subject to change and must constantly be updated by the
`
`user. This required the user to learn and be familiar
`
`with the database's operations as well as be granted
`
`access to the database in the first instance.
`
`The claimed invention replaces this cumbersome,
`
`manual process. Either automatically or based on a
`
`minimal number of user commands or inputs,
`
`a first
`
`computer program can analyze text in a document to
`
`determine whether it contains a type of information
`
`that can be used to search an information source, such
`
`as a database, external to the document for related
`
`information.
`
`For example,
`
`in one embodiment the claimed
`
`invention analyzes a document by seeking,
`
`for example,
`
`line separations and formatting, address designators
`
`and abbreviations such as street, avenue, or drive;
`
`title designators and abbreviations such as Mr., Mrs.,
`
`or Dr.; and company designators and abbreviations, such
`
`as Inc., LLC, or P.C.
`
`That embodiment of the invention
`
`can also look for common names such as John or Jane.
`
`The information identified in the document,
`
`such as names, addresses, or phone numbers is
`
`automatically used by the invention to search for

`information in an information management source, such
`
`as a database or contact management program,
`
`to
`
`determine if the information identified in the document
`
`or portion of that information exists in the
`
`information source.
`
`If the program finds names or addresses in the
`
`information source corresponding to the text identified
`
`in the document,
`
`the additional information is
`
`automatically displayed and possibly inserted into the
`
`document.
`
`The user may also update the information source
`
`by inserting or adding the information identified in
`
`the document, such as the name, address, or phone
`
`number.
`
`For example, if a contact had moved,
`
`the
`
`system can substitute the contact‘s address in the
`
`contact database with the address from the document.
`
`Figure 1 of the patents-in—suit is a flowchart
`
`showing an example of the information handling
`
`capability disclosed in the patents.
`
`In this example
`
`the system has searched for the textual information in
`
`the document.
`
`If the system found a name in the
`
`document,
`
`that name is searched for in the database.
`
`If a name is not found,
`
`the system prompts the user to
`
`specify an address.
`
`If the system finds exactly one
`
`match,
`
`the address, and correct name, if applicable,

`
`If the system finds more
`
`than one match,
`
`the system displays the results and
`
`prompts the user to select the correct address.
`
`Example 1
`
`in Figures 3 and 4
`
`in the patent
`
`specification describe the scenario in which the
`
`invention searches for address information
`
`corresponding to a name.
`
`In the context of this
`
`example,
`
`the user initiates the claimed invention by
`
`clicking on the OneButton.
`
`The system recognizes the
`
`text in word processing document as a name, searches
`
`for the corresponding address, and inserts the name in
`
`the document.
`
`Example 2
`
`in Figures 5 and 6
`
`in the patent
`
`specification describe the scenario in which the
`
`invention searches for a name and address in the
`
`database, and upon not finding the name and address
`
`prompts the user to add the contact to the database.
`
`In Example 4 and Figure 9
`
`in the patent
`
`specification the invention searches for a name and
`
`address in the database, and upon finding the name
`
`associated with a different address than in the
`
`document the system asks the user to modify the contact
`
`record in the database.
`
`In this example a user receives information in
`
`a document,
`
`in this case text messages, which includes

`
`
`
`:3 will show the user related data or provide additional
`
`a phone number, address,
`
`time and date, and flight
`
`information.
`
`The claimed invention attempts to find data
`
`related to contents of the text messages.
`
`The claimed
`
`invention analyzes the information in the text messages
`
`to determine if it is a type of information, such as
`
`name, address, phone number,
`
`that can be used to search
`
`for related data elsewhere.
`
`In this example the system has determined that
`
`such information exists in the text messages and has
`
`marked that information with underscores.
`
`If the user
`
`taps on the underscored entries,
`
`the claimed invention
`
`options to perform an action.
`
`For example, if the user taps on the phone
`
`number,
`
`she may be presented with options to call the
`
`number, send a text message to the number, or add the
`
`number to contacts.
`
`If the user taps on the address in the text
`
`message,
`
`she may be taken to Maps screen showing the
`
`location of the address and its surroundings.
`
`If the user taps on the date and time,
`
`she may
`
`be prompted to create an event, or show the event‘s
`
`date and time in the calendar application with other
`
`scheduled events.

`And if the user taps on the flight number,
`
`she
`
`may be given the option to preview the flight and
`
`obtain salient information about the flight, such as
`
`departure and arrival times and terminal and gate
`
`information.
`
`In this sense the claimed invention has linked
`
`the first set of data in the text message to a second
`
`set of data found in other sources and provided the
`
`user with additional information and the ability to
`
`perform actions based on the data. All without the
`
`user having to access the external
`
`information sources
`
`or databases herself.
`
`The claimed invention has thus
`
`improved information handling and exchange between
`
`various programs using a limited set of inputs from the
`
`user.
`
`This concludes Arendi's Technology Tutorial.
