`the capacitance of said planar capacitors.
`[Prior Art]
`The basic patent for this type of non-touch sw itch is
`ow ned by Intel Electronics Limited, Australia (see JP 63-
`502540
`A
`(international
`application
`number:
`PCT/AU86/00043)).
`Next, the configuration and basic operation of this
`non-touch sw itch w ill be described. As show n in FIG. 4, it
`is formed from a planar capacitor including an outer
`electrode plate 2 and a central electrode plate 4, w ith an
`insulator 3,

`
`w hich is disposed inside this outer electrode plate 2, and is
`indicated by the hatching, therebetw een. As show n in FIG.
`5, a square w ave is input as a drive signal to the outer
`electrode plate 2, and a transistor Q1 for detection is
`connected to the central electrode plate 4.
`FIG. 7 (a) show s the charge distribution state of the
`planar capacitor, and FIG. 7 (b) show s the charge
`distribution state w hen a fingertip has approached. That is
`to say, w hen the fingertip approaches the sw itch surface of
`the non-touch sw itch 1, the finger acts as a third electrode
`and, in addition
`to the capacitor betw een the outer
`electrode plate 2 and the central electrode plate 4,
`capacitors are formed betw een the outer electrode plate 2
`and the fingertip, and betw een the central electrode plate
`4 and the fingertip. Consequently, the charge betw een the
`electrodes is divided, such that the capacitance betw een
`the electrode plates 2 and 4 is reduced as compared w ith
`the normal state, in response to w hich the current flow ing
`through the transistor Q1 decreases such that, in the
`output w aveform show n in FIG. 6 (a), in w hich the normal
`fingertip is not close, the output pulse changes as shown
`in FIG. 6 (b). This change is detected, and the non-touch
`sw itch 1 determines that this is ON or OFF. As show n in
`FIG. 8 [sic], individual non-touch sw itches 1 are arranged
`in a matrix.
`Meanw hile, the ON or OFF determination for the non-
`touch sw itch 1 is such that a reference value produced
`based on the peak value of the detection pulse w hen this
`w as pow ered on is stored, the peak values of the detection
`pulse signal are successively compared therew ith, and if
`one is less than the reference value (threshold level), the
`non-touch sw itch 1 is determined to be ON. The detection
`pulse is output w ith a fixed period and the comparisons and
`determinations are repeated.
`[Problems to Be Solved by the Invention]
`How ever, since a multiplicity of non-touch sw itches 1
`are disposed adjacent to each other, in response to the
`approach of a fingertip, the output pulses of the non-touch
`sw itches 1 therearound w ill change. In particular, w hen the
`sw itch surfaces of the non-touch sw itches are installed in
`the vertical direction, the non-touch sw itch below the non-
`touch sw itch intended by the person is undesirably
`detected first. Furthermore, w hen the sw itch surfaces of
`the non-touch sw itches are installed
`in the horizontal
`direction, there is a problem that the non-touch sw itch in
`front of the non-touch sw itch intended by the person is
`undesirably detected first.
`is provided in view of the
`The present invention
`foregoing matters, and provides a non-touch sw itch device
`intended to prevent erroneous input by establishing priority
`rankings for simultaneous input, in cases in w hich the
`sw itch surfaces of a multiplicity of non-touch sw itches are
`arranged adjacent to each other in the vertical or the
`horizontal direction.
`[Means for Solving the Problems]
`The present invention comprises: a comparator, w hich
`compares a peak value of a detection pulse signal from a
`non-touch sw itch w ith a reference value set for each of a
`multiplicity of arrayed non-touch sw itches; and a
`computation and control circuit, w hich determines w hich
`non-touch sw itch has been turned ON w hen comparison
`results have been simultaneously input from comparators
`corresponding to non-touch sw itches, by assigning validity
`to the comparison result of the comparator corresponding
`to the non-touch sw itch having a higher priority ranking in
`
`¶7
`
`accordance w ith priority rankings that are established in a
`predetermined direction, w herein priority rankings are
`established from top to bottom, in cases in w hich the sw itch
`surfaces of the non-touch sw itches are arrayed in the
`vertical direction, and priority rankings are established from
`distal to proximal, in cases in w hich the sw itch surfaces of
`the non-touch sw itches are arrayed in the horizontal
`direction.
`[Operation]
`¶6
`Thus, w hen the sw itch surfaces of the non-touch
`sw itches are arrayed in the vertical direction, the priority
`rankings are established from top to bottom, and w hen
`sw itch surfaces of the non-touch sw itches are arrayed in
`the horizontal direction,
`the priority
`rankings are
`established from distal to proximal, and the non-touch
`sw itch having the higher priority ranking is determined to
`have been turned ON, by the computation and control
`circuit, in accordance w ith the comparison result of the
`comparator.
`[Embodiments]
`Embodiments of the present invention w ill be described
`below w ith reference to the draw ings. FIG. 3 show s a block
`diagram show ing a signal system for a non-touch sw itch 1.
`Note, that, although only one non-touch sw itch 1 is show n,
`a matrix is actually formed. A square-w ave key-scan drive
`signal is scanned as described above, so as to be input to
`each non-touch sw itch 1 from a computation and control
`circuit 10
`that
`is constituted by a microcomputer.
`Furthermore,
`the output of the non-touch sw itch 1 is
`detected by the transistor Q1, and the DC component of
`the output of the transistor Q1 is removed by a DC
`component removing circuit 11. Furthermore, the peak of
`the output signal that has been amplified by an amplifier
`circuit 12 is held by a peak-hold circuit 13, and is further
`compared w ith a reference value from the computation and
`control circuit 10 by a comparator 14, the output being input
`to the computation and control circuit 10. Furthermore,
`upon receiving the output of the comparator 14, a light
`emitting diode 7 is controlled by an ON/OFF control signal
`by the computation and control circuit 10, and the light
`emitting diode 7 is dynamically lit by an LED scan signal.
`Note that, to clarify the ON/OFF state of the non-touch
`sw itch 1, a hole 6 is provided in the center of the central
`electrode plate 4 and the substrate 5 of the non-touch
`sw itch 1 as show n in FIG. 4, and the light emitting diode 7
`is disposed in this hole 6.
`Here, w hen the sw itch surfaces of the non-touch
`sw itches 1 are arrayed in the vertical direction, as shown
`in FIG. 1 (a), considering the structure of a human finger, it
`is possible that the non-touch sw itch 1 under the intended
`non-touch sw itch 1 w ill unavoidably also be undesirably
`pressed roughly simultaneously, and erroneous input w ill
`be received, such that erroneous operations are performed.
`Here, in the present invention, as show n in FIG. 1 (b),
`w hen the sw itch surfaces of five non-touch sw itches 1 are
`arrayed in the vertical direction, priority rankings are given
`from top to bottom. The numbers in the figure indicate
`priority rankings. FIG. 1 (c) show s a case in w hich the non-
`touch sw itches 1 are arranged in a matrix, and this case as
`w ell, priority rankings are given from top to bottom, and
`priority rankings are given in the order of the leftmost
`column tow ard the rightw ard columns. The numbers in

`

`FIGS. 1 (b) and (c) indicate priority rankings. Accordingly,
`even if simultaneous
`input occurs w ith the non-touch
`sw itch 1 below , the intended non-touch sw itch 1 having the
`higher priority ranking w ill be detected by w ay of the control
`determinations of the computation and control circuit 10,
`such that erroneous operations in response to normal
`fingertip approach are eliminated.
`FIG. 2 show s another embodiment. When the sw itch
`surfaces of the non-touch sw itches 1 are installed in the
`horizontal direction, considering the structure of a human
`finger, as show n in FIG. 2 (a), it is possible that the non-
`touch sw itch 1 on the proximal side of the intended non-
`touch sw itch 1 w ill unavoidably and undesirably also be
`input
`roughly simultaneously,
`such
`that erroneous
`operations are performed. Here, as show n in FIG. 2 (b),
`priority rankings are assigned from distal to proximal (in the
`illustrated example, from left to right). (c) in this figure is a
`case in w hich the non-touch sw itches 1 are arranged in a
`matrix, and in this case, priority rankings are assigned from
`the upper row to the low er row . Note that the numbers in
`(b) and (c) in
`this figure indicate priority rankings .
`Accordingly, even if simultaneous input occurs w ith the
`proximal non-touch sw itches 1, the intended non-touch
`sw itch 1 having the higher priority ranking w ill be detected
`by w ay of the control determinations of the computation
`and control circuit 10, such that erroneous operations in
`response to normal fingertip approach are eliminated.
`[Effects of the Invention]
`The present invention comprises: a comparator, w hich
`compares a peak value of a detection pulse signal from a
`non-touch sw itch w ith a reference value set for each of the
`multiplicity of arrayed non-touch sw itches; and a
`computation and control circuit, w hich determines w hich
`
`¶1
`
`¶2
`
`non-touch sw itch has been turned ON w hen comparison
`results have been simultaneously input from comparators
`corresponding to non-touch sw itches, by assigning validity
`to the comparison result of the comparator corresponding
`to the non-touch sw itch having a higher priority ranking in
`accordance w ith priority rankings that are established in a
`predetermined direction, w herein priority rankings are
`established from top to bottom, in cases in w hich the sw itch
`surfaces of the non-touch sw itches are arrayed in the
`vertical direction, and priority rankings are established from
`distal to proximal, in cases in w hich the sw itch surfaces of
`the non-touch sw itches are arrayed in the horizontal
`direction, and thus priority rankings are established from
`top to bottom, or from distal to proximal, and the non-touch
`sw itch having the higher priority ranking can be determined
`to have been turned on, by the computation and control
`circuit, in accordance w ith the comparison result of the
`comparator, producing and effect in w hich erroneous
`operations in response to normal fingertip approach are
`eliminated.
