`contain circuitry optimized to locate data at high speeds; audio
`CD players need to locate only the beginning of audio tracks,
`which they play sequentially. CD-ROM drives retrieve data
`much more slowly than computer disk drives. The speed of
`CD-ROM drives is typically expressed as a multiple of the
`original CD-ROM specification, which called for a data tranifer
`rate of 1 SOK per second; typical drives today function at 1 Ox,
`12x, or even 16x (10, 12, or 16 times faster than the original
`specification).

`CD-ROM interface A feature of a sound board that lets
`you connect a CD-ROM drive directly to the sound board,
`thereby easing installation and enabling you to send audio from
`a CD-ROM directly to the sound circuitry, without taxing the
`rest of the computer.
`
`CD-ROM player See CD-ROM drive.
`
`CD-ROM/SD See CD-ROM/ Super Density.
`
`CD-ROM/Super Density (CD-ROM/SD) A little-
`used standard for packing up to 9.6G onto a CD-ROM. The
`CD-ROM/SD standard uses both sides of disks and is not com(cid:173)
`patible with any mass-produced CD-ROM drives. See MMCD.

`CD-ROM/XA A CD-ROM drive that conforms to the
`CD-ROM/ eXtended Architecture standard, created by a consor(cid:173)
`tium of media and computer firms (including Microsoft, Sony,
`and Phillips). This standard enables CD-ROMs to combine
`music and data.
`
`CD-RW A recordable CD-ROM technology that enables
`unlimited write operations (unlike CD-R, which restricts you
`to one write only).
`
`cell 1. In a spreadsheet or table, a rectangle formed by the
`intersection of a row and column in which you enter informa(cid:173)
`tion in the form of text (a label) or numbers (a value). 2. In
`Asynchronous Tranifer Mode (ATM) networking, a small unit of
`data that has been broken up for efficient transmission (synony(cid:173)
`mous with packet).

`cell address
`In a spreadsheet, a letter and number combination
`that identifies a cell's location on the worksheet by column and
`row (A3, B9, C2, and so on). If you refer to a cell in a formula,
`the cell address is called the cell reference.

`cell animation An animation technique in which a back(cid:173)
`ground painting is held in place while a series of transparent
`sheets of celluloid containing objects are placed over the back(cid:173)
`ground painting, producing the illusion of movement. Cell ani(cid:173)
`mation is much easier than drawing a new background for every
`frame in the animation sequence. A Macintosh animation pro(cid:173)
`gram that uses a computerized version of cell animation is
`Macromedia Director.

`cell definition The actual contents of a cell in a spreadsheet,
`as displayed on the entry line. If you place a formula in a cell,
`the program displays the result of the calculation rather than
`the formula itself.
`
`cell format
`In a spreadsheet, the way the program displays the
`contents of cells. Label formats include aligning the text on the
`left, right, or center. Numeric formats include currency, percent,
`including commas, setting a number of decimal places, and date
`and time display. You can change the font and font size, and make
`values and labels bold and italic. See current cell, global format, graph(cid:173)
`ics spreadsheet, label alignment, and range format.

`cell pointer
`In spreadsheet programs, the rectangular highlight
`that indicates the current cell. When you enter data in the spread(cid:173)
`sheet, it's recorded in the current cell.
`
`cell protection
`In a spreadsheet program, a format applied to a
`cell, a range of cells, or an entire file that prevents you from alter(cid:173)
`ing the contents of protected cells.
`
`cell reference
`In a spreadsheet formula, the address of the cell
`that contains a value needed to solve the formula. When used in
`a formula, a cell reference tells the program to go to the named
`cell (such as Bl) and use the value in that cell to perform the
`calculation. A cell reference can refer to a cell containing a for(cid:173)
`mula, which may contain its own cell references to other cells,
`which can themselves contain formulas. A change made to any
`constant in such a worksheet affects intermediate values and,
`ultimately, the bottom line. See recalculation method.
