`NEC Combines HighSpeed IP Packet Processing with ATM Switching
` (Jun 11, 1998)
`
`Abstract (summary)
`
`NEC <6701> has developed the industry's first largevolume ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) switcher with standard
`high speed Internet protocol packet processing technology, called AtermMis16 in Japan and AtermNet/M16 in overseas
`versions. Units are slated to ship in October. The device was developed in response to the rapidly expanding use of
`intranet and Internet based communication systems and the spread of ATM line service. The device is the first to
`combine asynchronous transmission mode technology, which is increasingly popular in business networks, with IP
`packet processing. It also has a function module with unique builtin clock that allows switching capacity to be adjusted
`from 1.6GB to 7.5GB and up to 40GB per second. It also has features allowing priority transmission of realtime voice
`and image data.
