` Exterior rearview mirror located
`on the driver’s side
`
`___________
`
`DESCRIPTION
`
`5
`
`The present invention relates to exterior rearview mirrors located on the driver’s side of
`
`motor vehicles.
`
`10
`
`15
`
`The technical field of the invention is the manufacture of automobile accessories. Current
`
`regulations in most countries require that motor vehicles be equipped with an interior rearview
`mirror and an exterior rearview mirror located on the driver’s side to allow the driver to see vehi-
`cles coming from behind preparing to pass.
`
`Because of the relative position of the driver’s eyes and the rearview mirrors, and the
`usual dimensions thereof, the field of the two rearview mirrors does not cover part of the road on
`the side of the vehicle where the driver is, so that the driver risks changing lanes without seeing
`that another vehicle is already preparing to pass, a frequent cause of accidents.
`
`Already known are vehicles equipped with two exterior rearview mirrors located on the
`driver’s side which can be oriented independent of each other. The solution is not satisfactory
`because the angle between the two rearview mirrors must be adjusted with great precision so that
`the fields of the two mirrors complement each other.
`
`20
`
`The objective of the present invention is to obtain new dual rearview mirrors that are in-
`
`terdependent and which form angles between them that are said permanently by the manufacturer
`to a precise value that results in the best rearward visibility.
`
`An exterior rearview mirror according to the invention comprises a principal mirror and
`
`an auxiliary mirror, which are flat, superimposed, interdependent mirrors and the respective sec-
`tions of the two mirrors along horizontal planes form between them a constant angle of between
`8° and 10° and preferably equal to 9°, and the auxiliary mirror is angularly offset in a direction
`such that its field is located in front of the field of the principal mirror.
`
`25
`
`Advantageously the two mirrors are rectangular, have the same width, and the auxiliary
`
`mirror is situated above the principal mirror and is of a height on the order of one half that of the
`principal mirror.
`
`30
`
`
`
`SMR USA
`Exhibit 1037
`Page 005
`
`
`
`2
`Preferably, the sections of the two mirrors along a vertical plane form an angle (β) be-
`
`tween them of between 1.5° and 3.5°, and preferably equal to 2.5°, and the auxiliary mirror is tilt-
`ed towards the front of the principal mirror, i.e. towards the rear of the vehicle.
`
`2650982
`
`The result of the invention is two new exterior rearview mirrors intended to be placed on
`
`the same side of a motor vehicle as the steering wheel.
`
`The dual rearview mirrors according to the invention comply with regulations since they
`
`include a regulation principal rearview mirror. Moreover, without increasing the width, they al-
`low a driver, before changing lanes, to check in the auxiliary rearview mirror to ensure that a ve-
`hicle is not already engaged on his left or right, thus making it possible to avoid accidents particu-
`larly on highways.
`
`5
`
`10
`
`The angles between the two rearview mirrors are set to their optimal value by the manu-
`facturer and cannot be changed since the two rearview mirrors are interdependent.
`
`The following description refers to the appended drawings which represent, without limi-
`
`tation, one embodiment of a dual rearview mirror according to the invention.
`
`15
`
`Figure 1 is a top view of a vehicle equipped with a dual rearview mirror according to the
`
`invention.
`
`Figure 2 is a front view of a dual rearview mirror according to the invention.
`
`Figures 3 and 4 are cross-sections along III-III and IV-IV of figure 2.
`
`20
`
`25
`
`Figure 1 represents an automotive vehicle 1 traveling to the right and which has a steer-
`ing wheel on the left.
`
`This vehicle is equipped with an exterior rearview mirror 2 called principal rearview mir-
`ror, which is attached to the left door in which is of regulation dimensions. Represented in the
`figure are the eyes of the driver, and in dashed lines the field that he sees in the rearview mirror 2
`for a proper setting of the orientation thereof. It can be seen that a whole area of the road in the
`left lane is located in front of said field, so that the driver of vehicle 1 cannot see a vehicle 3
`which is about to pass and which is located in front of the field of the rearview mirror 2. If he
`changes lanes at that moment the risk of an accident is high.
`
`
`
`
`
`SMR USA
`Exhibit 1037
`Page 006
`
`
`
`3
`To eliminate this risk, the vehicle 1 is equipped with a second auxiliary rearview mirror
`
`2650982
`
`4.
`
`In order for said auxiliary rearview mirror to be effective, it must have a field of view that
`is complementary to that of the principal rearview mirror.
`
`5
`
`To achieve this, the auxiliary rearview mirror must make an angle with the principal
`rearview mirror in the horizontal plane that must be determined very precisely during manufac-
`ture of the dual rearview mirror, and which the driver will be unable to change subsequently.
`Represented in solid lines in figure 1 is the field of vision 4' of the auxiliary rearview mirror 4,
`which is situated in front of the field of vision of the principal rearview mirror.
`
`10
`
`Figure 2 is a front view of a preferred embodiment of a dual rearview mirror according to
`the invention. It comprises a rectangular flat principal mirror 2 which has standardized dimen-
`sions, for example a width of 150 mm and a height of 80 mm.
`
`15
`
`20
`
`Above the principal mirror is a second auxiliary flat mirror 4 which has the same width
`and substantially less height, for example a height of between about one half and one third that of
`the principal mirror.
`
`Thus, the driver normally looks into the principal mirror, which is the larger one and
`which is of regulation dimensions. The secondary mirror is superimposed on the principal mirror
`and does not modify the width thereof.
`
`The two mirrors 2 and 4 are interdependent with one another. They are mounted in a
`frame – not shown – and the orientation of the two mirrors can be set by orienting the frame
`which can be mounted on a ball, or by orienting the two mirrors with respect to the frame, but
`being interdependent the two mirrors pivot simultaneously by the same angle so that if the fields
`of the two mirrors are complementary they remain so when the orientation of both mirrors is
`modified simultaneously.

`

`Figure 3 is a horizontal cross-section along III-III of figure 2. It can be seen in this figure
`that the horizontal section of the auxiliary mirror 4 forms an angle α, the value of which is factory
`set, with the horizontal section of the principal mirror 2, which angle is between 8° and 10° de-
`pending on the models of automobiles, and preferably equal to 9°.
`
`2650982
`
`5
`
`The values have been established experimentally by tests performed on automobiles to
`find the angle that makes it possible to obtain a field 4' of the auxiliary mirror that works as effec-
`tively as possible with the field 2' of the principal mirror.
`
`Preferably, the two mirrors are fixed on the same vertical axis 5 located in the middle of
`the width, and their projections on a horizontal plane intersect in the middle as shown in figure 3.
`
`The angle α is such that the field of the auxiliary mirror is located in front of the field of
`the principal mirror, i.e. the angular offset between the position of the principal mirror and that of
`the auxiliary mirror is in a clockwise direction in the case of a rearview mirror of a left-hand drive
`vehicle, as represented in figure 3.
`
`In the case of a rearview mirror equipping a right-hand drive vehicle, the angular offset α
`between the principal rearview mirror and auxiliary rearview mirror is in the reverse direction.
`
`10
`
`15
`
`Figure 4 represents a vertical cross-section of figure 2 along a line IV-IV.
`
`It can be seen in this figure that the sections of the two mirrors 2 and 4 along a vertical
`plane form a constant angle β between them. Said angle is between 1.5° and 3.5°, and is prefera-
`bly equal to 2.5°.
`
`20
`
`The plane of the auxiliary mirror is tilted towards the rear of the vehicle, i.e. towards the
`reflective face of the principal mirror. By varying the sections of the two mirrors along vertical
`planes, they can be aligned.

`
`DESCRIPTION
`
`.
`
`-
`
`On

On

`La
`figure 2 est une vue de
`préférentiel d'un double
`rétroviseur
`selon l“invention. Celui-ci
`Au-dessus
`du miroir principal
`se
`trouve un deuxiéme miroir
`auxiliaire plan 4 qui
`a
`miroirs.

`la section horizontale du miroir
`sur cette figure que
`2. On voit
`figure 3.
`conduite
`a
`gauche
`qui
`est
`
