`
`ABOUT THE COVER
`
`The Apostle Paul (oil on canvas 51% x 41sin.) was painted by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) about 1657.
`Paul seemsto have fascinated Rembrandt throughouthis career; the artist represented him as early as
`1627 in a painting of Saint Paul in Prison, and as late as 1661, when he painted himself as Saint Paul.
`Probably executed with at least some participation by anassistant, this painting is a superb example of
`Rembrandt'slater style. In his earlier works, details were carefully delineated, subjects normally shown
`in an identifiable environment, and the apparent sourceoflight specifically located. In The Apostle Paul,
`there is no sense of a particular setting, details are minimized, and the light on Paul’s face, hands, and
`on the folio before him does not comefrom a readily identifiable source. Aside from the chair and the
`desk, only the quill, the book, and the sword behind the desk are recognizable. Here Rembrandt does not
`use light and shade primarily to define form but to express moods andspiritual meaning. As the art
`historian Wilhelm von Bodesaid early in this century, Rembrandt's later works rendered “souls rather
`than...existences.”
`
`This painting is in the Widener Collection at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
`If you wouldlike a reproductionofthis painting, we will be happy to send you a full-color print (11 x 14in.)
`for $4.00 (to cover postage and handling). Please request 225,188-7 and specify The Apostle Paul from
`the cover of the 1998-99 Aldrich Catalog. You can also contact us for a list of paintings that have
`appearedin Aldrich publications and are available as full-color prints.
