`
`DETAILED ACTION
`
`Allowable Subject Matter
`
`Claims 1-22 are allowedin view of the prior art.
`
`The following is an examiner’s statement of reasons for allowance:
`
`Asto claim 1, the prior art of record, taken either alone or in combination, fails to
`
`disclose or render obvious a time-domain reflectometer for sensing at a desired set of spaced
`
`sensing positions along an optical fiber, the positions sensing an external physical signal acting
`
`on the fiber to change the optical path within the fiber at the sensing positions, the system
`
`comprising an opticalfiber, a first light source, a binary pseudonoise code sequence modulator
`
`that modulatesthe carrier signal generated bythe first light source, a heterodyner for generating
`
`beat frequencies, a coupler that couples the pseudonoise code sequencelightwave with the
`
`heterodyner and launchesthe coupled light from the code sequence lightwave and the
`
`heterodynerinto the optical fiber, the coupler then receiving light reflected back from portions of
`
`the fiber, a second light source coupled to the heterodyner, the light source producing a coherent
`
`local oscillator lightwave signal in phase lockedrelation to the carrier lightwave to produce at
`
`the output of the heterodyner a radio frequency composite difference beat signals, a splitter to
`
`split the beat signals into a plurality of channels, and a corresponding plurality of pseudonoise
`
`code sequence demodulators that de-multiplex the beat signals to indicate the changesin the
`
`optical path dueto the external physical signals imparted on the fiber, in combination with the
`
`rest of the limitations of the above claims.
`
`As to claims 21 and 22,the prior art of record, taken either alone or in combination, fails
`
`to disclose or render obvious a system havinga plurality of sensing stations along an opticalfiber

`
`span, the system sensing input signals from an external physical changethat induceslight path
`
`changeswithin regionsofthe fiber influenced by the input signals, the system comprising an
`
`optical wave networkto launchlight into an optical fiber and retrieve light reflected from
`
`portions ofthe fiber, a modulator to modulate the signal in accordance with a reiterative
`
`autocorrelatable form of modulation code, a heterodyner to derive a radio frequency counterpart
`
`from the light reflected back from the fiber, and a correspondingplurality of autocorrelation
`
`detectors operative upon the radio frequency counterparts in respective timed relationships, in
`
`combination with therest of the limitations of the above claims.
`

`
`payment ofthe issue fee and, to avoid processing delays, should preferably accompanythe issue
`
