`(application filed on or after May 29, 2000)
`
`The Patent Term Adjustment to date is 379 day(s). If the issue fee is paid on the date that is three months after the
`mailing date of this notice and the patent issues on the Tuesday before the date that is 28 weeks (six and a half
`months) after the mailing date of this notice, the Patent Term Adjustment will be 379 day(s).
`
`If a Continued Prosecution Application (CPA) was filed in the above-identified application, the filing date that

`Notice of Fee Increase on October 1, 2004
`
`If a reply to a "Notice of Allowance and Fee(s) Due" is filed in the Office on or after October 1, 2004, then the
`amount due will be higher than that set forth in the "Notice of Allowance and Fee(s) Due" because some fees will
`increase effective October 1, 2004. See Revision of Patent~ fm: ~~™;Final Rule, 69 Fed. Reg. 52604,
`52606 (May 10, 2004).
`
`The current fee schedule is accessible from WEB site (http://www.uspto.gov/main/howtofees.htm).
`
`If the fee paid is the amount shown on the "Notice of Allowance and Fee(s) Due" but not the correct amount in view
`of the fee increase, a "Notice of Pay Balance of Issue Fee" will be mailed to applicant. In order to avoid processing
`delays associated with mailing of a "Notice of Pay Balance of Issue Fee," if the response to the Notice of Allowance
`is to be filed on or after October 1, 2004 (or mailed with a certificate of mailing on or after October 1, 2004), the
`issue fee paid should be the fee that is required at the time the fee is paid. ~ Manual .Qf Patent Examining Procedure
`(MPEP), Section 1306 (Eighth Edition, Rev. 2, May 2004). If the issue fee was previously paid, and the response to
`the "Notice of Allowance and Fee(s) Due" includes a request to apply a previously-paid issue fee to the issue fee
`now due, then the difference between the issue fee amount at the time the response is filed and the previously-paid
`issue fee should be paid.~ MPEP Section 1308.01.
`
`Effective October 1, 2004, 37 CFR 1.18 is amended by revising paragraphs (a) through (c) to read as set forth below.
`
`Section 1.18 Patent post allowance (including issue) fees.
`
`(a) Issue fee for issuing each original or reissue patent,
`except a design or plant patent:
`By a small entity (Sec. 1.27(a)) ...................... $685.00
`By other than a small entity ......................... $1,370.00
`(b) Issue fee for issuing a design patent:
`By a small entity (Sec. 1.27(a)) ...................... $245.00
`By other than a small entity ............................ $490.00
`( c) Issue fee for issuing a plant patent:
`By a small entity (Sec. l .27(a)) ...................... $330.00
`By other than a small entity ............................ $660.00
`
`Questions relating to issue and publication fee payments should be directed to the Customer Serv'ice Center of the

`
`REASONS FOR ALLOWANCE/DISCUSSION OF THE PRIOR ART
`
`1.
`
`The prior art made of record and not relied upon is considered pertinent to
`
`applicant's disclosure.
`
`Clayton discloses a printed circuit board with 9 identical semiconductor memory
`
`devices, however does not teach that one of the semiconductor memory devices is
`
`connected as an error correction chip. All of the semiconductor memory devices are
`
`vertically positioned relative to the length of the printed circuit board along which the
`
`contact strip extends. None of the semiconductor memory devices are horizontally
`
`positioned relative to the length of the printed circuit board along which the contact strip
`
`extends.
`
`Mezawa discloses a printed circuit board with 9 identical semiconductor memory
`
`devices which are vertically positioned relative to the length of the printed circuit board
`
`along which the contact strip extends. A separate and different driver is provided which
`
`is oriented horizontally relative to the length of the printed circuit board along which the
`
`contact strips extends. There is no teaching of connecting one of the semiconductor
`
`memory devices as an error correction chip.
`
`Kasatani discloses a printed circuit board with 9 identical semiconductor memory
`
`devices, however does not teach that one of the semiconductor memory devices is
`
`connected as an error correction chip. All of the semiconductor memory devices are
`
`horizontally positioned, with the longer side of their housing being parallel to the length
`
`of the printed circuit board along which the contact strip extends. None of the

`
`semiconductor memory device housings have the longer side positioned perpendicular
`
`to the length of the printed circuit board along which the contact strip extends.
`
`Bhakta et al. discloses a printed circuit board with 16 identical semiconductor
`
`memory devices, all of which are vertically positioned relative to the contact strip of the
`
`printed circuit board. There is no teaching of providing one of the memory devices as
`
`an error correction chip or the placement of such error correction chip.
`
`Michael discloses a printed circuit board with 9 identical semiconductor memory
`
`devices, all of which are horizontally positioned relative to the contact strip of the printed
`
`circuit board and a separate controller which is different from the above-mentioned
`
`semiconductor memory devices, which is also horizontally positioned relative to the
`
`contact strip. The reference teaches that the controller may provide additional logic
`
`including error recognition and correction circuits. There is no teaching of connecting
`
`any of the 9 semiconductor memory devices as an error correction chip and there would
`
`be no motivation to do so since the error correction is already provided.
`
`Ikeda discloses a printed circuit board with 16 identical semiconductor memory
`
`devices, all of which are horizontally positioned relative to the contact strip of the printed
`
`circuit board and a separate controller which is different from the above-mentioned
`
`semiconductor memory devices. The controller is vertically positioned relative to the
`
`contact strip. However, as mentioned, the controller is configured differently from the
`
`semiconductor memory devices and is not "identically designed" as recited in the
`
`claims. There is no teaching of connecting one of the identical semiconductor memory
`
`devices as the error correction chip.

`
`Seyyedy discloses a printed circuit board with a plurality of identical
`
`semiconductor memory devices and a separate and different controller which is
`
`provided with an error correction chip. However, as mentioned, the controller is
`
`configured differently from the semiconductor memory devices and is not "identically
`
`designed" as recited in the claims. There is no teaching of connecting one of the
`
`identical semiconductor memory devices as the error correction chip. There is no clear
`
`teaching of the mounting orientation of the semiconductor memory devices or the
`
`controller as the figures only appear to support a block diagram of the memory module.
`
`2.
`
`The allowability of claim 1 resides in each and every limitation recited in the
`
`independent claim 1 including the recitation of the electronic printed circuit board having
`
`a contact strip for insertion into another electronic unit, a memory module having at
`
`least nine identically designed integrated semiconductor memories, each one of said
`
`semiconductor memories being encapsulated in a rectangular housing having a shorter
`
`dimension and a longer dimension, said housing of
