`The Packababy
`
`Carry baby on Front, Back or Hip from birth to 4yo!
`
`Order the Packababy Here!
`
`The baby carrier that does EVERYTHING - wear your newborn-through-4yo on your back, your
`hip or your front.
`
`We have baby carrier conversations on my EC list regularly; they all know how devoted I am to
`a good baby carrier! I've had 2 very big, very attached babies and a bad back, so I'm in favor
`of anything that keeps me carrying my boys :) My goal in creating the Packababy was to make
`THE ONLY CARRIER a mom would ever need at a price most everyone can afford. (slings are
`also important - even the Packababy can't totally replace the ease of a sling!) We managed to
`do that AND make the best carrier either of us has ever used!

`
`The Packababy:
`
`1) holds the legs up (to give the spine that healthy
`"C" curve & promote healthy hip socket development)
`2) is wearable on the back
`3) is wearable on the front
`4) is wearable on the hip
`5) waist band takes the weight of the baby
`6) newborn through a 4 YEAR old
`7) comfortable shoulder straps
`8) fold up small when not in use
`9) fits most people
`10) inexpensive
`11) no breakable parts
`12) intuitive and easy to use
`13) usable by a momma alone without help
`14) wash & dry in one normal cycle
`
`Sound impossible? :) The Packababy has a very wide base, so baby/toddler's legs are held up all
`the way out to the knee. This is the optimal position for baby's development and it also keeps
`swinging baby legs from kicking your knees as you walk :)
`
`It can be worn back, front and hip, and put on very quickly in any of those positions. Needless
`to say you can nurse in the hip or front position!
`
`Most of the weight of the baby is supported by the waist band - very important since carrying
`a heavy baby from straps accross your shoulders can really hurt your back.

`
`The wide shoulder straps mean that the straps don't cut into you and make your arm go numb.
`If your baby is well over 20 lbs, you plan to do a lot of hiking, or if you have sensitive
`shoulders, order a set of removable Shoulder Pads as well for superior comfort!
`
`And most importantly, MOMMA CAN PUT HER BABY ON HER BACK WITHOUT HELP!!

`
`The elegance of the Packababy lies not in any tricks cosmetic finish - it lies in the form of the design
`itself. It has only what it needs - strength, comfort, versatility, high quailty materials and handmade love.
`It will carry your baby through the toddler years and beyond with unencumbered simplicity :)
`
`How the Packababy is made
`
`I'm not a seamstress - I don't like detailed sewing projects! One of the design parameters of
`the Packababy was that it had to be fast & easy to sew (partly for economic reasons, partly
`because that's how I like to sew, partly because this kind of restriction would ensure the
`Packababy remained *simple* - a functional, elegant design).
`
`Because of this design ethic, the Packababy is not a fancy factory-made-looking product. It is
`of the "functional and tidy" school of sewing. We can sew them quickly because they are no-
`frills designs - this allows me to focus on the QUALITY and SAFETY of the design rather than
`on cosmetic sewing tricks. :D The simple good looks of the Packababy are due to the clean lines
`of the design and the use of high contrast colors (white straps & white canvas contrasting with
`colored fabrics on the outer shell).
`
`We usually sew the Packababies about 10 at a time over the course of 2 evenings. We do all of
`one function before moving onto the next one.
`
`Cedarwolf cuts the canvas or hemp/cotton fabrics 6 at a time with a rotary cutter (like a pizza
`cutter that can go through many layers of fabric). This gives us a nice uniform pattern that
`using scissors just can't achieve (and lets Cedar cut a lot in a short period of time - vital, since
`Zoe wants to dangle from Cedar's arms :P).
`
`I then pin the Packababy bodies together - 7oz sateen unbleached canvas on one side, hemp or
`hemp/cotton pretty fabric on the other side. I sew these 2 pieces together using my 15yo
`Bernina 1010 sewing machine (all hail the Bernina - its an amazing machine!). I sew the edges
`with a 1/2 inch margin and leave one bottom corner open so that I can turn the fabric inside
`out.
`
`When the body of the Packababy is turned right side out, I sew it a 2nd time with a 1/8 inch
`margin (so that the stitching goes through not just the 2 layers of fabric, but also the original
`1/2 inch margin so that it won't ever unravel). Since this is the "beauty" stitching, I've had to

`
`rapidly become better at becomming an even sewer! Now the body of the Packababy is done.
`
`I cut the webbing into 4 yard lengths and hem the ends. I pin the webbing onto the Packababy
`body very carefully - the webbing must be slightly longer than the diagonal of the Packababy
`body (because it will curve around a 3 dimensional baby!) but still short enough to shrink a bit
`smaller than the Packababy body fabric (because we want the weight of the baby on the
`*webbing* not on the *stitching* - webbing strong, stitching can rip!).
`
`Now I sew the webbing onto the Packababy body. Where the webbing attaches to bottom (the
`waist tie) I oversew the edges of the webbing twice so it will be strong. Where the webbing
`attaches to the top (the shoulder tie) I oversew the edges of the webbing THREE times to the
`Packababy body fabric, since this is the area of highest stress on the stitching.
`
`Then the long thread bits are snipped, the Packababy is folded to fit into a Priority envelope
`and its done! Yea! :D
`
`The shoulder pads are very simple - a rectangle of pill-proof polar fleece is sewn into a pocket,
`the high density closed cell back-pack-strap foam is tucked inside, and the remaining flap of
`polar fleece is sewn over to make the strap guide for the Packababy shoulder strap to slide
`through.
`
`Cedarwolf addresses the envelopes, packages up the Packababies and I drive them to the post
`office!
`
`The elegance of the Packababy lies not in any tricks cosmetic finish - it lies in the form of the
`design itself. It has only what it needs - strength, comfort, versatility, high quailty materials
`and handmade love. It will carry your baby through the toddler years and beyond with
`unencumbered simplicity :)

`
`How To Use Your Packababy
`GENERAL NOTES & SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
`
` The short 2 straps tie around your waist :) The long 2 straps go over your
`shoulders (and baby's shoulders). The "inside" is the side WITHOUT the straps, the "outside"
`is the side with the straps. Baby will always sit on the INSIDE.
`
`The first 2 or 3 times you try the Packababy (or any carrier for that matter), have someone
`there with you to help make it as FAST as possible. Your goal should be to get baby on quickly
`and then go outside for a vigerous walk. Making Baby's first experience with the Packababy
`fun and quick and leading to a great walk will make baby MUCH more patient with your learning
`efforts later :)
`
`In all 3 positions, the shoulder straps are SUPPOSED to come up over baby's shoulders - its
`part of how baby stays secure in there. This is an unusual feature for those used to slings or
`Bjorns.
`
`Ninty percent of all baby carrying discomforts are because the STRAPS AREN'T SNUG
`ENOUGH - everyone is tentative when first tying on a baby & most people tend to let baby
`droop & straps be loose. This always results in a saggy baby & a poor fit. When in doubt, pull
`the straps tighter. Don't make them TOO tight :D
`
`For a smaller baby, roll the bottom up about a foot to make it shorter, then tie it on your
`waist, tight. (roll more for a really tiny baby, or if an older baby wants arms out - but
`remember, you WANT the shoulder straps to come OVER your babies shoulders in most cases,
`so don't make it too short). If rolling the bottom every time bothers you, pin it fast with a
`couple of diaper pins :)
`
`Special Notes for Small Babies
` When reading the directions, all the places where you would tie the Packababy under the
`bum, with a small floppy baby, you can tie the straps around baby's back INSTEAD - this
`stabilizes a floppy baby. Tying the straps under the bum & thighs helps distribute the weight &

`
`keep the legs up - with a very small baby you don't need this anyway - so tie it around the back
`to stabilize small babies who don't have good upper body strength yet.
`
`If you use the tie around the back instead of under the bum CHECK IT regularly to make
`sure its nowhere NEAR baby's neck!!
`
`For Newborns
`
` Putting a newborn's legs in a straddle position is too wide for most new babies!!! So bunch
`baby's legs up in a froggy position (like many babies prefer to be held up against the chest -
`the baby in the picture has her legs froggy'd but straddled out - a newborn wants froggy legs
`bunched close to their body) and when you tie the tie around the back or under the bum,
`position it so that there isn't a huge gap near baby's legs, so that he won't fall out. Keep a
`careful eye on wee little ones - make sure they're not slipping out to one side!!!!
`
`Knots
`
`We reccomend that you use sqare knots. These pictures taken with bows will be replaced
`eventually - don't follow our bad example! USE KNOTS!!!! Even though we've been carrying
`babies for years we've each had the bows slip out (babies didn't fall, but it did make us think!)
`USE KNOTS. Also, BE MINDFUL - you are responsible to be sure that these knots STAY
`TIED - check them regularly!!!!! The webbing is treated with a finishing product that makes
`it slightly slick - once its been washed a few times it will be less slippery :)
`
`Head Support
`
` If your baby can't yet hold up his or her head, or if you know baby will be falling
`
`asleep, leave the Packababy long enough that the curved top supports the head either folded
`behind it or pulled up over it. Make sure baby's head is turned to the side so she can
`breathe. :)

` 1)roll the bottom if needed to make the Packababy shorter
`
`
`
` 2) Tie it on your waist so that it dangles down like an apron INSIDE showing
`
` 3) Hold baby in front of you, facing you, legs straddled around your waist
`
`4) Flip Packababy up behind baby
`
` 5) Put straps over your shoulders (and over baby's shoulders) with one hand
`while supporting baby's bum with other hand
`
` 6) Reach behind you & grab strap from opposite side - so that they cross on
`
`
`
` 7) Pull straps around to front over baby's thighs & tie under
`
`your back
`
`baby's bum
`
` 8) To support the head of a sleeping baby (or a newborn baby) have the
`Packababy long enough that you can flip up the curved top. This also helps focus those
`distractible nurslings who unlatch at every thing they see :)

`
`To wear baby on your hip, put the Packababy on just as you did to wear baby on your front,
`only tie it on off center, so that baby sits on your hip instead! So easy!
`Instructions for Carrying on the Back, Chair Method
`1)roll the bottom if needed to make the Packababy shorter
`
` 2)Sit the Packababy on an arm chair, inside showing, straps layed out so you
`
`can reach them
`
` 3) Sit baby on the Packababy
`
` 4) Sit on chair in front of baby
`
`5) Reach behind you and straddle or froggy-up baby's legs (if too young to straddle) & scoot
`back far enough to touch baby
`
` 6) Tie the waist straps around your waist
`
` 7) Reach behind you and pull shoulder straps up over baby's shoulders & over
`
`your shoulders
`
` 8) Pull shoulder straps snug over your shoulders & under your armpits
`
` 9) Stand up, keep holding straps!

` 10) Tie straps under baby's thighs & bum
`
`11) Tighten waist strap if its necessary - its often a bit loose w/ this method & needs
`tightening
`
`Instructions for Carrying on the Back
`
`*until you're experienced, use this method standing in front of a sofa or with another adult
`there to catch a possible fall. Until babies & mommas are more experienced, a baby may decide
`to suddenly arch or flip off of your back - and that could be a bad fall for baby or a sore arm
`for you trying to catch baby! Falling on the sofa is at least much safer :)*
`
` 1) roll the bottom to make Packababy shorter if needed
`
` 2) Tie Packababy around your waist, turn it to the back so that it dangles
`down the backs of your legs
`
`3) Get baby behind you:
`
` A) Either pick him up facing away from you,
`
`
`lift over your head & set him on your back as you lean forward and adjust his legs to straddle

`your back as he usually straddles your hip (baby will be laying on your back at this point -
`keep leaning forward!)
`
`OR
`
` B) Put baby on your hip, lean way forward and scooch him around to your
`back so that he's straddling your back with his legs just as he usually straddles your hip
`
` {needless to say, this takes some getting used to doing & you might want help the
`first few times, but it becomes natural do to very quickly :)}
`
` 4) Hold baby under the bum to support him & w/ other hand flip up
`Packababy (you are still leaning way forward so that baby is laying on your back)
`
` 5) Reach behind you with your free hand & grab a shoulder strap & pull it
`over your shoulder
`
`6) While holding 1st strap tight, let go baby's bum & reach back for the 2nd strap - when
`you've got them both, stand up straight :)
`
`7) Pull the straps SNUG - if they're loose baby will sag down & be uncomfortable & the saggy
`weight will be uncomfortable to you, too
`
` 8) Pull the straps over your shoulders like a backpack & then back under your
`
`armpits
`
` 9) Bring straps back over baby's thighs & tie securely under baby's bum
`
` If desired you can cross the straps on the chest during the back carry -
`infact it makes a nice change in where the pressure goes if you're carrying a baby for hours at
`a time - you can switch back & forth every hour or so. I carried sleeping 35lb Ian for two and a

`half hours on my back on Sunday - I changed the straps from backpack to crossover a couple
`of times to change where the weight was carried & it was quite comfy :)
`
`To nurse in the front or hip positions, simply loosten the straps tied under baby's bum & then
`retie them. This dropps baby down to the breast & gives you some room to get your hands
`inbetween the Packababy & yourself to open your shirt & get baby latched on :)
`
`When you're done, remember to snug the straps back up & pull baby upright or your back will
`start to feel the strain!

`
`Packababy Praises! Here's what a few of our testers
`have said about the Packababy:
`I just got Greyson on my back.. WOOOOHOOOO! that is soooo comfortable! He was fussing,
`but I wanted to try it (impatient!) and he settled right down and zonked! Then I wanted to see
`how fast (with help) I could get him out, and he cried as soon as he was "free"... I think he
`likes your packababy em! *grin*
`I can't believe I put logs on the fire, made tea, typed a message, and all that WEARING
`Greyson!!!!!! (you can't understand how stunned I am.. I never did that before, wore a baby on
`my back!)
`Shannon mom to 3mo Greyson
`
`
`
`
`Well I tried ds on my back the other day (2 yrs. 25-30lbs) and it was quite comfy!! Of course
`if I were to wear him for any extended period of time I would need [the] shoulder pads. It did
`come up to his ears but he didn't seem to mind and just kind of "melted" into me and got all
`cozy!. It was very snug. BTW, I am not a big person (5.4 and about 115lbs).

`
`I have had the best comfort with the packababy in the front carry position. I was at the
`Chinese New Year celebration in the International District here in Seattle all day yesterday
`and Eli was quite cozy in the packababy.
`I love that it is plain. I can see how much fun it could be to be able to decorate my own carrier
`with fabric paints, baby foot prints, sponge prints, tie dye or whatever!
`Terrie Mama to Oliver 4.5 years and Eli 6.5 mos
`
`
`[Jutta] was really tired. I put her on my back - no problem doing this, rolled the bottom 2 or
`three times - tried to the inside and outside, you are right, rolling to the inside works better.
`Jutta went to sleep in 15 minutes and slept for 2 hours, on my back.
`In the afternoon I put her on my back again - I was even faster than the first time and she
`sat there even better. She looked comfortable and I was comfortable, too. She slept again
`after 15 minutes.
`
`Wolfgang made a compliment of the PaB today. It was late, he was tired and we were walking
`home from town, Jutta in the stroller *gasp* I offered to try to carry Wolfgang on my back in
`the short Didy I brought just in case Jutta didn't want to stay in the stroller. Wolfgang
`asked: "Didn't you bring the packababy?" Me: "No, I did not bring it". Wolfgang grumbles: "To
`bring the PaB would have been a much better idea. It would have been much more practical!"
`Me: "So, shall we try the Didy?" Wolfgang: "No. I'll walk. Next time we will take the packababy
`with us..."
`Freddy mom to ds Wolfgang (11/99)and dd Jutta (07/02)
`
`
`I don't mind telling people who are thinking of ordering them that's they are worth it. so when
`word gets out that you have an awesome carrier...well how's that movie go, "build it and they
`will come".
`Wendy momma to Dalton
`
`The only problems reported by our testers were 1) sensitive shoulders don't like the straps
`without padding and 2) its not a "concrete thinker friendly" carrier :D If not having an exact
`place to hook a strap bothers you, or if intuitive processes make you fumble, read the
`Instructions page & try to get a feel for whether the Packababy is for you :) As with all
`confining carriers (slings, Baby Trekker & such) an older baby not used to the shoulder straps
`comming over his shoulders may not like the way the Packababy feels. It is perfectly possible
`to shorten the Packababy so that baby's arms can stick out - it just isn't as supportive :)
