`which communicates with a computer having details of an
`individual’s account. See automatic teller machine (ATM) and ‘
`personal identification number (PIN).
`TELECOMM TELECOMMunication. Any process that allows
`information of any nature transmitted in a useable form (e. g.
`audible signals, visible signals, printed copy, fixed or moving
`pictures) to travel from a sender to one or more receivers. The
`transmission is achieved by means of any electromagnetic
`system (e.g. electrical
`transmission by wire,
`radio, optical
`means and guided waves).
`;
`TELEPUTER A combined TELEvision and COMPUTER.
`Designed to be the central component in the home telecom-
`munications services, this unit combines six major technologies;
`colour television, videotex, computing, video cassette record-
`ing, video disk and telecommunications. The system can be set
`to access automatically any number of computers, because it
`has a built-in personal computer capability. Data gathered can
`be manipulated, analysed and processed at the terminal under
`the control of various access programs.
`TELEX TELetypewriter EXchange service. An automatic dial-
`up dedicated switched network that provides for communica—
`tion between teletypewriter (TTY) and teleprinter equipment
`worldwide. A terminal is used to produce information on a
`paper tape (PT) which is fed into a reader and then transmitted.
`TEMP (l) TEMPerature. A measure of the average kinetic
`energy of
`the moving molecules or atoms in a material.
`Generally it
`is a measure of how hot or cold material
`is
`compared to a defined scale. The Systeme International de
`Unites (SI) unit of temperature is the kelvin (K), but
`the
`Celsius (C,8) or centigrade scale is normally used for everyday
`measurements.
`(BIT)
`(2) TEMPorary register. Typically a 12-binary digit
`memory location that holds or latches an arithmetic and logical
`unit (ALU) operation, in order to avoid race conditions before
`it is sent to a final memory location.
`TERA- A prefix denoting one million million, a billion (1012); for
`example a terabit is 10 2 binary digits (BITS).
`TFT (1) Thin—Film Transistor. Fabricated using thin-film techni—
`ques,
`typical of a thin-film transistor,
`is an insulated-gate
`fie1d~effect
`transistor
`(IGFET).
`It
`is manufactured on a
`substrate.
`(2) Thin-Film Technology. A technology in which electronic
`circuits or elements are formed by a process
`in which
`vacuum-deposited or sputtered films are produced upon a
`supporting material. TFTs can be considered as films that are

`THD Total Harmonic Distortion. A measure of
`
`the total
`
`distortion produced in an audio system as a result of the
`production, within that system, of harmonics or multiples of the
`original audio signal.
`THERMISTOR THERMally sensitive resISTOR. Usually fabri-
`cated from semiconductor material shaped as rod, bead or disk
`and named accordingly, thermistors are available in two forms:
`negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistors that have a
`resistance that decreases with increasing temperature, and
`positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistors that have a
`resistance that
`increases with increasing temperature. Both
`forms cover a range of temperature coefficient from around
`—65% +70% per degree celcius or centigrade (C,8).
`THP Through (the) Hole Plating. Printed circuit boards (PCBs)
`having circuits on both sides which are connected electrically by
`the plating that constitutes the circuit tracks passing through
`holes in the board.
`
`this metallic element has an
`Ti TItanium. Resembling iron,
`atomic number 22, atomic weight 47.90, specific gravity 4.5 and
`melting point of 1850 degrees celcius or centigrade (C,8).
`TIMS Transmission Impairment Measuring Set. Normally a
`portable unit designed for
`in—the-field characterization of
`analogue circuits for data communications. The sets are usually
`compatible with International Telegraph and Telephone
`Consultative Committee (CCITT)
`standards and measure
`impulse noise, random circuit noise,
`level versus frequency
`distortion and signal—to—noise ratio (SNR).
`TIP Terminal Interface Processor. A small computer connecting
`terminals to a packet-switching network.
`TIPTOP Tape InPut/Tape OutPut. A method for introducing
`data to an input device or reading data from an output (0,2)
`device. The technique can include the use of plastics or metallic
`magnetic tape (MAGTAPE), perforated paper tape (PT) or
`fabric tape loops.
`TKO TrunK Offering. An exchange facility permitting an
`operator to intrude into an established connection to offer one
`of the parties an incoming long-distance call.
`TZL Transistor—Transistor Logic. See TTL.
`TLB Translation Look—aside Buffer. Currently used in 32-binary
`digit (BIT) processors having an on chip (CHIP) memory
`management unit, a TLB that helps simplify the process of
`translating a logical address to a physical address.
`TLU Table Look Up. The action of finding a function value that
