`Verizon Communications Was
`Created
`
`Bell Atlantic merged with GTE and changed its
`name to Verizon Communications Inc. The $52
`billion merger took almost two years to close,
`following approvals by Bell Atlantic and GTE
`shareowners, 27 state regulatory commissions and
`the FCC, and clearance from the U.S. Department
`of Justice and various international agencies.
`Vodafone AirTouch and Bell Atlantic Corp. received
`regulatory approval to combine their U.S. wireless
`assets, Bell Atlantic Mobile and AirTouch
`Communications. This $90-billion joint venture
`began operations as Verizon Wireless.
