`
`STATEMENT OF REASONS FOR PATENTABILITY AND/OR CONFIRMATION
`
`Claims 10 and 16 of US 8,624,844 B2 (“844 Patent”) are being reexamined in this
`
`proceeding. As noted in the order for ex parte reexamination mailed on April 4, 2022, claims 1-
`
`9, 11-15, and 17-22 of 844 Patent are not subject to reexamination.
`
`Claims 10 and 16 are confirmed.
`
`The following is an examiner's statement of reasons for patentability and/or confirmation
`
`of the claims found patentable in this reexamination proceeding:
`
`PO’s Responsefiled on March 3, 2023 has been fully considered and is persuasive.
`
`Examiner withdraws the rejections of claims 10 and 16 made in the final Office action.
`
`The prior art of record does not specifically disclose or fairly teach the combination ofall
`
`of the elements and limitations recited in claims 10 and 16, particularly wherein the laptop mode
`
`is configured to display to a user on the main display componenta first content mode having a
`
`first content display orientation with the main display component oriented towards the user and
`
`the keyboard oriented to receive input from the user; and the easel mode is configured to display
`
`to the user on the main display component a second content mode having a second content
`
`display orientation with the main display component oriented towards the user and the keyboard
`
`oriented awayfrom the user.
`
`Consistent with the specification of 844 Patent, the claim recitation “configured to
`
`display to a user on the main display componentafirst content mode” (or “configured to display
`
`to a user on the main display component a second content mode’) refers to displaying some
`
`information that represents a higher-level construct into which content is grouped. This recitation
`
`is distinct from merely displaying individual
`
`things (e.g., applications)
`
`that may be grouped into
`
`a content mode.
`
`HP Inc. - Exhibit 1005 - Page 6
`
`HP Inc. - Exhibit 1005 - Page 6
`
`

`

`Application/Control Number: 90/014,965
`Art Unit: 3991
`
`Page 3
`
`Lane generally discloses, among other things, displaying content in a laptop mode (see
`
`Lane, Figure 20) and in an easel mode (see Lane, Figure 28). Ledbetter further teaches, among
`
`other things, displaying different content corresponding to different physical configurations of a
`
`portable computer (Ledbetter, paragraphs [0023], [0026], and [0057]). However, Ledbetter’s
`
`teachings do not constitute displaying first and second content modes asrecited in claims 10 and
`
`16 becausedisplaying content (e.g., displaying various applications) alone is insufficient
`
`to meet
`
`the established interpretation of displaying representations of higher-level constructs into which
`
`content is grouped. Neither Lane nor Ledbetter specifically disclose displaying representations of
`
`higher-level constructs into which content is grouped, 1e., displaying content modes asrecited in
`
`claims 10 and 16.
`
`Any comments considered necessary by PATENT OWNERregarding the above
`
`statement must be submitted promptly to avoid processing delays. Such submission by the patent
`
`owner should be labeled: “Comments on Statement of Reasons for Patentability and/or
`
`Confirmation” and will be placed in the reexamination file.
