`Method and Apparatus for Feedback and Locc1.tion Update
`
`Various methods are provided fo:c providing feedback
`from mobile stations tc, a network. one o·c- more of these
`methods might for examJj11e be impl.emented in IEEEB02, 16e
`s Downlink and Uplink sys1tems.

`"•
`
`PART-ONE: MSS fast sig1~ing for feedback/intention indication
`
`10
`
`15
`
`20
`
`Background of the Invention
`
`In order to Eac.ilitate the DL data transmission, some
`information of feedback, such as C/I meai::urements and MSSs'
`indications, such as MIMO/perrnutation modes is needed to be
`sent from MSSs.
`
`In B02.l6e, fast-feedback channel is introduced to
`.
`.
`.
`.
`.
`enable such operation. In B02.16e/D3, two types of fast
`feedback operations axe defined:
`
`1) unicast Fast-P·eedbac::k allocation subheader can be used
`.
`.
`to let MSS to feedback one of 4 typ~s of information using
`the temporarily assigned fast-feedback channel
`
`2) 'broadcast CQ:CC!H_alloc_IE can be used to allocate
`dedicated feedbac~k chamie1 (CQICH) with periodical
`opportunity enabling MSS to provide MIMO related intention
`(indication) .
`
`The above two approacl1es pro:vide quasi-periodical opportunity
`to enable MSSs to provide their indicatlon and feedback.

`
`Detailed Description of the Preferred Embr>diments
`
`5
`
`In some cases, if a MSS needs t,:, inform its intention
`based on some real-tim&. requirements and :needs the BS to have a
`quick reaction (e.g. , 1:ast anchor BS switching, MIMO mode
`switchi-ng, UL resource request and etc), the above summarized
`approaches may not be Etf ficient ways, especially if a MSS has
`had a dedicated feedba<,k (CQICH) assigned and such an
`indication from a MSS :Ls not expected to change very
`frequently,
`
`10
`
`In some eml:)odiments, it is ass\.Lmed that each MSS has
`had dedicated feedback cl'iannel (CQICH) wbich might for example
`be ass~gned by CQICH_alloc_IE.
`
`In a first embodiment illustrat:ed in Figure l, the
`MSS uses a pre-reserved feedback payload code (e.g., 1111) to
`indicate that the MSS wants to inform BS of its intention.
`
`15
`
`In response to this, the BS allocate resources for
`the MSS to send a newly de:fined MSS_repo·ct header (defined l::>y
`way of example in Figure 5). Preferably, the MSS_report header
`includes information, such as basic CID, reporting type and
`20 detailed reporting) 01: newly defined MSS_report_IE () (refer to
`Fig. G), which includE~s reportin~;( type arid detailed reporting
`
`In a anotheJ~ embodiment iliustrated by way of example
`in Figure 2, the BS u11es an unsolicited polling method by using
`newly defined Feedback_channel_reporting_IE {number of
`feedback/reporting tY)?es is.increased) which includes the
`required type for a MSS to report. BS sends
`Feedbaek_channel_repo:C'ting_IE which indicates the reporting

`
`type expected by BS. 1~e MSS will use the dedicated feedback
`channel to report the J"ec;[Uired information in the next frame.
`
`In some embodiments, the MSS does not have a
`dedicated feedl:>ack (CQICB) assigned.
`
`s
`
`In a first such embodiment, (refer to Fig.3) the BS
`uses unsolicited polling method by using newly defined
`-
`-
`-
`Feedback channel reporting IE (number of feedback/reporting
`types is increased) which includes the rE:quired type for a MSS
`to report and the temporary assigned feedback channel (CQICH).
`10 The BS sends Feedback_channel_reporting_IE which indicates the
`:reporting type expected by BS and the asuigned temporary
`feedback channel {CQICH). The MSS will use the temporary
`feedback channel to report the required :Lnformation in the next
`frame.
`
`l.S
`
`20
`
`25
`
`In·another such.embodiment," (refer to Fig.4), the BS
`uses unsolicited pollj,ng method (use nor1.11al _UL MAP IE) to
`-
`enable the MSS to use MSS Intention header. The MSS uses the
`. .
`.
`header to indicate rei>orting . type and reporting. The BS sends
`UL MAP IE.to poll the report from a MSS C the resource assigned
`fit to MAC· MSS_:report header (6 bytes)." The MSS used the UL
`resource to·eend the MSS_report MAC header.
`
`One advanta!;e of the abQve enhancement is to enable a
`guick reaction on som,a real-time requirement (fast anchor BS
`switching, fast MIMO mode s:witching, timely UL resource
`allocation for UL traffic and so on).
`
`Note if the MSS_:report_IE is used for a MSS to send
`its intention, this IE might for examplu be :repeated twice or

`
`PART-TWO: MSS initiated_!,ocation update
`
`Background of the Invention
`
`In B02.1Ge/D:~, the idle mode is described in Section
`6,3.21 as an optiona1 rnode. The paging groups are defined to
`· enable reasonable pagin.g overhead and reasonable accuracy of
`MSS location. A MSS in idle mode shall u1;,date its location to
`network either when the MSS has entered a new paging-group or
`the MSS is requested to \lpdate its looatj,on by BS. In the
`current standard, the l.ocation update pre>cedure is similar to
`that of an initial rangin.g.
`
`Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments
`
`The purpose of location update is to inform network
`of a-MSS' location,. instead of a network entry. Therefore the
`current location updat.e procedure can be simplified to
`eliminate unnecessary overhead and delay. New location update
`methods are provided.
`
`s
`
`10
`
`15
`
`In one met:he>d, location update codes are introduced
`used for MSS initiated location update (LU).
`In another
`method, for BS initiat:.ed LU, a code is assigned to a MSS when
`20 BS pages a idle MSS. An authentication key renewal option is
`also introduced.
`
`A fi:rst approach is illustrate~d bel.ow in which
`RNG_REQ/RSP is used for LU purpose.

`PART-THREE: MSS Fast <~l Search
`
`Background of the Immnt ion
`
`10
`
`The current p:c·eamb1e per IEEB802 .16-2004 is designed
`primarily for fixed deployment. 'I'he preamble search requires a
`large amount of compu~ation power at the, MSS for fast system
`access and for cell selection and reseleiction to support the
`device mobility in a multi-cell deploynmnt scenarios and to
`perform frequency domain fine synchroni~~ation. For the initial
`cell search, there is no prior knowledg•, about the

`
`synchronization positions for potential b.ise station
`candidates; hence the MSS needs to perfopn the correlations
`with all possible PN sE1quences foJ:" each P'FT window position
`within the entire searc:hing window. Such a window could .be
`large even for the sync:hronous BS network. For hand-off, even
`with the presence of the adjacent BS list information broadcast
`from the anchoring BS, the preamble search is of excessively
`high computational complexity.
`
`s
`
`Detailed Description of the Preferred Eml:1odiments
`
`10
`
`15
`
`A fast cell search procedure iu provided to reduce
`the cell search complexity by almost 60 1:imes.
`'l'he cell search
`is typically performed for MSS in the ac1:.ive state, cell
`scanning and even idle mode.
`Advantage,:>usly, the fast cell
`search may be very .beneficial in terms d~astically reduce the
`power consumption.and battery life of poctable device.
`
`A common pre:amble is introduced. in addition to the
`'l'he common preamble uses a
`existing cell specifiu preamble.
`common PN sequence £01~ all BSs. The MSS performs fine
`synchronization using the common PN sequence on the common
`preamble, and the. result will provide the locations of
`candidate BSs. The BS specific search is then performed in the
`vicinities of those p,~aks by using BS s:pecific PN sequences.
`With this two stage cell search, the searching window is
`drastically reduced.

`
`For the synchronized BS deployment, let's assume that
`the anchor BS will brc, adoast the neighbo·c BS list for M
`sectors, and the searc:hing window is 300 samples long (as we
`have 256 samples preflx), however the real·world the searching

`Solution l
`
`5
`
`10
`
`15
`
`The current IEEEB02.16d/DS spec.Lfication defines 3
`carrier sets, each of which is used by a :segment .
`In the early
`version (IEEE802.16d/D4), the 6 carrier s,:1ts are used; each
`segment uses two carrier sets. We can use the same 6 carrier
`sets. one carrier set i.n each segment is used for the common
`preamble. For 2 transm.i.t antennas, antenn.a. o uses odd carrier
`set, antenna l uses even carrier set. The common preamble is
`mapped to carriers set1:.1 used by antenna o •
`
`In one example implementation, for each segment as
`defined in previous sec:tions, two or four antennas are used to
`transmit the MI.MO signcLls. Each segment uses 2 types of
`prearnb1e carrier-sets (one for each antenna or pair of
`an_~ennas) out of the 6 sets in the following manner:
`
`For two tran11mit MIMO or four transmit_ MIMO:
`
`Segment o - carrier set: o used by antenna o, carrier set 3 used
`by antenna 1

`10 Solution 2
`
`TO keep the backward compatibility with IEEE802.16-

`
`This solution is similar to so:Lution 2, except it
