`
`BECOMM DEMONSTRATION USHERS IN NEW ERA OF MEDIA APPLIANCES AT
`DEMO 2000
`
`Strings Software Environment Manages the Routing of Content to Disparate
`Consumer and Computing Devices in the Home
`
`INDIAN WELLS, Calif., February 7, 2000 BeComm Corporation today at DEMO 2000
`demonstrated software for nextgeneration Media Appliance™ solutions. BeComm
`(www.becomm.com), a privately held company based in Redmond WA, formally
`announced Strings‚, a unique operating environment that routes mediarelated
`content among disparate devices to ensure consumers can access the content of
`their choice, on the device of their choice, in the format of their choice.
`
`Strings encapsulates content processing capabilities into objects and provides
`discovery, routing, transformation and delivery of content in a distributed network of
`appliances. Strings specifically addresses the needs of communications, connectivity
`and media routing by running directly on top of existing operating systems,
`applications and device drivers without interfering with the normal function of these
`systems.
`
`"Strings creates an environment where static Internet appliances transition into
`dynamic and flexible Media Appliances that share hardware resources and processing
`capability," said BeComm president and chief executive Edward Balassanian. "By
`leveraging existing technologies, Strings makes a richer and more diverse
`environment for users allowing them to dictate how computers, networks and the
`technology community should serve them."
`
`The broad range of platform support for Strings makes it suitable for any device that
`computes and communicates. This includes gateways, settop boxes, televisions,
`web appliances, PCs, smart phones, as well as most other consumer electronics
`devices. Strings reduces the burden of content processing on any given appliance, so
`that one device can access content and services designed for a dissimilar device. A
`handheld device or a settop box utilizing Strings will now be able to leverage a PC
`for conversion of text to voice or for storage of realtime television content.
`
`"BeComm is filling a huge gap in the home networking arena with Strings," said
`Chris Shipley, executive producer of Demo 2000. "This is red hot technology which
`will drive consumers already infiltrated by the Web to experience new forms of
`communication by transparently allowing them to communicate across virtually any
`device at any time."
`
`Using Strings, devices will be able to work in concert to enable user experiences that
`were previously not possible. This enables users to experience content where they
`want it. "Being able to download MP3 files and play them directly on your stereo
`speakers is really attractive technology," continued Chris Shipley regarding
`BeComm's demonstration of digital audio content played over an analog stereo.
