`Quick Navigation Tips
`Scrolling around full Explorer windows can take a long time. Typing the first
`letter of any file or folder will jump right to the first matching file or folder.
`Press the letter again to go to the next matching file or folder. This behavior
`applies only to folders that are already expanded (i.e., visible in the left
`pane).
`Backspace will take you back up one level in the folder hierarchy. When
`the focus is in the left pane, the left arrow will do the same, but will also
`close the open branch. The right arrow will expand branches (any folder
`with a + next
`to it);
`the up and down arrows will move through the
`expanded branches in a linear fashion, but will not expand any branch that
`is not already open. Press Enter to expand or open the currently selected
`folder. Left and right arrow keys on the keyboard can expand and contract
`branches.
`Cut, copy, and paste keys (Ctrl—X, Ctrl—C, and Ctrl—V) can be used in
`the right pane to move or copy files from one location to another. This can
`be easier than drag and drop when the files are in folders that aren’t close
`together. Ctrl—A selects all.
`To get a two—pane Explorer view of any folder, press Shift while you
`double—click on the folder.

`
`If you prefer the Windows 3.1 File Manager, use Start 4 Run —> winfile. You
`can start the Windows 3.1 Program Manager with Start ~> Run —> progman.
`Keep in mind that you can’t View long filenames in winfile.
`
`The Explorer is smart enough to figure out when a floppy disk is
`full. So you can safely go to a large folder, Select All, copy, and
`paste to a floppy. When the disk is full, you’ll be prompted to insert
`a new disk.

`
`Description
`
`Windows Update is a web site (see Fi
`made
`gure 4-29) on which Microsoft has
`updates and certain add~
`ons available for Windows
`98. These includes updates to
`Win 98 components available in Win 98 setup,
`security fixes, the Win 98 Y2K fix,
`bug patches, and additional components. Whe
`n you first log on to the site, the
`Product Updates link is where you
`’ll find all the goodies. A message will pop up
`asking whether you would like
`your computer checked for currently installed
`products and their versions. Micro
`soft promises that no information will be sent to
`them. If you select yes, your syst
`em is scanned and the list of product updates is
`tailored to display only those no
`t already installed on your system. Select no and
`all available components are displayed. Components are
`presented as a checklist,
`so you can download and install them in batch.

`
`It would be useless to try to include an up—to—date list of what’s on the site.
`However, following is a list of some of the more important (and fun) items you
`can find there. If you have Windows 98 Second Edition, you already have many of
`these fixes installed.

`
`Windows 98 Year 2000 Update
`Fixes potential Y2K conflicts in Win 98. Though Microsoft claims these prob-
`lems only affect a few users, this download is a must-have.
`Internet Explorer Security Fixes
`Fixes security holes found in Internet Explorer. Each of these items is down—
`loaded and installed as a separate patch. Examples of fixes include:
`
`Internet Explorer “Wz‘na’ow.ExternalJscript” Security Update
`This update resolves an issue that can cause Internet Explorer to close
`unexpectedly when browsing a web page that contains malicious ]Script
`script.
`
`Internet Explorer “Frame Spoof” Security Fix
`This patch corrects a vulnerability in Internet Explorer 4 that could allow
`a malicious web site operator to create a bogus window that imitates a
`window on a legitimate web site. The threat posed by this vulnerability is
`that the false window could collect information from you and send it
`back to the malicious site.
`
`Internet Explorer5 and Internet Tools
`The latest Version of Microsoft’s browser. IE5 includes a number of under—the—
`hood fixes meant to increase speed, stability, and compatibility with the latest
`Internet standards, Other improvements include a searchable URL history,
`support
`for multiple DUN connections, and an expanded AutoComplete
`feature. Also included with the browser are updated versions of Outlook
`Express, MS Chat, and Netlvieeting. See “Internet Explorer” in Chapter 6 for
`details on the new IE5 features.

`
`Windows Critical Update Notification
`A background applet that scans the Windows Update site whenever you log
`on to the Internet and pops up a message if a new critical update is avail-
`able. This one is pretty useful
`if you don’t care to check in on the site
`yourself, but still wish to be aware when security and bug patches are
`released.
`
`Newest Versions of Wndows Components
`As optional components of Windows 98, such as Front Page Express, DirectX,
`and Accessibility Options are released, they are made available here.
`Driver Updates
`
`Launches an applet that scans your system for currently installed drivers and
`checks them against a database of current drivers available from Microsoft. If
`new versions are found, you will be able to install them directly from the site.
`Des/atop Themes
`Includes many additional desktop themes not available on the Win 98 CD-
`ROM.
`
`Windows Update also allows you to uninstall updates, patches, and drivers using a
`Restore page. Replaced files will be restored during the process. If you are unable
`to connect to Windows Update for some reason (or if you just don’t want to), you
`can also use the Update Wizard Uninstall utility (apwiznnexe) included with
`Windows 98. Run it from the Tools menu of System information (rnsinfo32.exe) or
`
`Windows Update
`
`111
`
`6
`
`

`
`just enter upwizun at the Run prompt. The utility will present a list of updates you
`can uninstall.
