`
`What is The Mayo Legacy?
`
`The Mayo Legacy is an organization of
`people who believe in Mayo’s future, and who
`wish to be part of it.
`To qualify for membership, you would
`make a gift provision to Mayo in your estate
`plan. Such gifts may be made through a
`bequest, charitable gift annuity or charitable
`trust. The amount of gift is entirely your choice,
`and will be kept confidential.
`Members of The Mayo Legacy live
`throughout the United States and in many
`countries around the world. Members represent
`all walks of life. Many Mayo patients, friends,
`staff and retirees belong to the Legacy.
`Legacy members share a bond of
`
`fellowship — and the satisfaction of knowing
`that their gifts are a key element in helping
`l\1ayo's programs move forward.
`
`What activities are there for Legacy members?
`
`Members are invited to special programs
`held throughout the United States. These
`
`programs offer an "inside look” at Mayo’s
`activities. Members receive a newsletter and
`
`other publications, which introduce fellow
`members of the Legacy, provide updates on
`Ma\'o’s wronrams and offer information on

`
`Why is it important for me to have
`an estate plan?
`
`lt is important for every person to have a
`
`well-designed estate plan. Your will is a key
`part of this plan. Depending upon your
`individual circumstances, other legal documents
`and provisions may also be important tools to
`carry out your preferences for the people and
`organizations that are important to you. By
`having a well-designed estate plan, you can
`minimize tax liability.
`
`

`

`Mayo's Development staff would be
`pleased to provide information about estate
`plans, and to answer specific questions for your
`personal situation.
`
`Why are medical research and education
`so important?
`
`They are the keys to a healthier tomorrow.
`Think of the progress that's occurred in your
`lifetime — cataract surgery, for example. Just 20
`years ago, it was a major procedure. You would
`have been confined to bed, your head
`immobilized by sandbags to prevent any
`
`"Why do we support Mayo in our
`
`will? The question can be answered
`
`simply.
`
`Its traditional values, dedicated
`
`doctors, L’.‘t‘CE’llL’lIl diagnostic procedures
`and its rcsearclzfor tlzcfuture of all
`mankind.
`
`We have watched the growth of
`Mayo for more than 50 years. Our
`parents came to Mayo and received
`excellent care. We have always received
`the same standard of care.
`The outlookfor Mayo’s future is
`brilliant. In today's society, where
`commitment to excellence has many
`different standards, Mayo maintains‘ its
`
`commitment to provide artery patient

`
`movement, while you spent up to two weeks in
`a darkened hospital room. Today, cataract
`surgery is an outpatient procedure — you're
`home and on your way in a few hours.
`Progress like this depends on medical
`research and education.
`
`And as far as we've come, there's so much
`
`more to discover. Today, Mayo researchers are
`studying conditions such as Alzheimer's
`disease, prostate disease, cancer and heart
`disease. Our findings are helping in the
`diagnosis, treatment and prevention of illnesses
`that threaten all of us.
`In addition, our
`
`educational programs train the next generation
`of healthcare professionals. Mayo has
`educational programs for medical students,
`physicians who seek advanced training, and
`researchers in the basic sciences. We also train
`
`technicians, therapists and other allied health
`professionals.
`To continue this quest, Mayo needs your
`help to support our leading-edge programs in
`medical research and education.
`
`\
`
`Why does Mayo receive contributions?
`
`Mayo is best known for the excellent
`medical care that our patients receive. We are
`also a not-for—profit institution. This has
`guaranteed Mayo's success in the past, and it
`assures Mayo’s future.
`Early in this century, Drs. William and
`Charles Mayo contributed all the assets of their
`medical practice, and the bulk of their personal
`savings, to create Mayo Foundation. Everyone
`at Mayo is on salary. All revenue after expenses
`supports Mayo's programs in medical research
`and education.
`
`

`

`The care that Mayo patients receive is
`based, in large part, on advances in medical
`education and research. These advances, in
`
`turn, result from the generous gifts that Legacy
`members and other friends make to Mayo.
`
`Does Mayo need my gift?
`
`Yes — today, more than ever, your support
`is of vital importance. Government grants for
`medical research are diminishing. Costs for
`technology and equipment are rising. And _vet
`the opportunity for medical discovery is greater
`than ever before.
`
`Today, the majority of funds that Mayo
`devotes to medical research and education
`
`comes from private benefactors — people just
`like you. Private gifts, of all sizes, are essential
`for Mayo’s programs to move ahead.
`
`What does it cost to join the Legacy?
`
`There are no entry fees or annual d Lies. To
`qualify for membership, you would provide a
`gift to Mayo in your estate plan.
`The amount of gift is entirely your choice.
`There are no minimum or maximum amounts
`
`required to join The Mayo Legacy. Some Legacy
`members specify an amount to be given to
`_\la_vo; others designate a percentage of their
`estate for Mayo.
`
`Must I notify Mayo about the size of my gift?
`
`.\lan_v Legacy members send us a cop_v of
`the part of their will that pertains to Mayo. This

`information, which is held in strict confidence,
`
`is
`
`of great help as Mayo plans for the future.
`However, sharing the information is for you to
`decide;
`it is not required that you do so to
`become a member.
`s
`
`I prefer to help local charities close to my home.
`
`Local support is important — but you may
`be surprised to know that many medical services
`common to your area were pioneered at large
`research centers like Mayo.
`For example, Mayo tested the first CT scans
`in the United States and helped refine heart-lung
`bypass surgery. Once revolutionary, these
`approaches are now standard medical practice.
`By supporting medical research and
`education at Mayo, you are investing in medical
`progress that will help people around the world
`—and in your hometown.

`
`How do I include Mayo in my will?
`
`Drafting of a will should be arranged
`through a lawyer. Mayo representatives are
`available upon request to confer with you and
`your attorney in drafting the appropriate
`bequest clauses. The following is a sample for
`an outright bequest:
`
`I give, devise and bequeath to Mayo
`Foundation for Medical Education and Research,
`a Minnesota charitable corporation located in
`Rochester, Minnesota, the sum of
`dollars
`(or
`percent of the residue of my estate
`or other personal or real property appropriately
`described) to be used as its Board of Trustees
`shall deem advisable to lies! promote the
`institution's objectives.
`
`By joining The Mayo Legacy, may I still make
`my annual gift to Mayo?
`
`Certainly. Many members of The Mayo
`Legacy, in addition to an estate provision, also
`make annual gifts to Mayo. This support is
`important to Mayo and deeply appreciated.
`
`How do I learn more about The Mayo Legacy?
`
`Simply contact Mayo’s Development office
`at any of the addresses and telephone numbers
`listed. We will be delighted to visit with you
`and answer your questions. Conversations are
`held in confidence, with no obligation to you.
`Thank you for your interest in Mayo.
