`The Maya brothers, Dr. Charles H. Maya and Dr.

`A century ago, in the pioneer
`days of medicine, Dr. William W.
`produced an enviable suu ms

`rate. The Mayo reputation
`flourished. Physicians and
`scientists came from across the
`nation and around the world to
`watch the Mayo brothers perform
`surgery. The family practice grew
`until it outgrew the family. This
`dilemma produced the first private
`group practice of medicine in the
`world.
`As the Mayos expanded their
`practice, they asked other doctors
`to join them. Specialists in many
`fields complemented their medical
`
`skills. They formed teams of
`experts, organized so that they
`could interact and support each
`other, yet remain dedicated to
`patient care.
`The rapid growth oi their group
`practice created the need for a
`new organization. This system
`would coordinate the activities of
`physicians and patients, the
`training of medical specialists and
`the growth of medical research.
`This system would become
`Mayo Clinic.

`
`Mayo combines a heritage of medical expertise with careful
`attention to each individual patient. This combination results
`in Mayo’s thorough yet personal approach to medical
`diagnosis and treatment.
`The Mayo Clinic story reads like
`a history of modern medicine. Its
`chapters include development ()l
`new cures, breakthroughs in new
`procedures and success in new
`forms of treatment.
`Mayo Clinic has contributed to
`and shared in the evolution of
`medicine, learning and growing
`with one goal in mind: the skilled
`and compassionate care ul our
`patients. This year, almost 300,000
`patients will leave their farms,
`small towns and cities to seek
`medical services in Rochester,
`Minn.
`They will become patients of a
`private group practice designed to
`deliver quality medical care on a
`large scale. Mayo and its affiliated
`hospitals, Rochester Methodist
`Hospital and Saint Marys Hospital,
`combine to form Mayo Medical
`
`Center, a medical community of
`15,000 employees who care for
`more than 4,000 patients every
`working day. We apply the
`knowledge and skills of many to
`the needs of each individual
`patient.
`Mayo Clinic works because it's a
`special way to practice medirine.
`It's a medical community focused
`on patient care, organized so that
`doctors can spend their time
`helping patients without worrying
`about schedultng appointments,
`locating records or handling
`administrative details.
`The result is a team of medical
`experts focused on the needs of
`individual patients and inspired by
`continuous involvement in
`education and research.
`The result is Mayo’s reputation
`for medical excellence.

`
`TEAMS OF EXPERTS
`
`Mayo's multi-specialty team approach to medicine gives our
`patients the opportunity to consult with specialists from
`virtually every medical field — all on the Mayo campus. We
`have used this team approach successfully for almost a
`century.
`
`Mayo's system of practicing
`medicine attracts specialists in
`every medical and surgical field.
`These specialists are able to use
`their skills efficiently and work
`cooperatively in a team approach
`to patient care.
`This team approach is a key to
`Mayo's success. More than 900
`physicians and scientists combine
`their expertise for the benefit of
`our patients.
`Despite the large stali, each
`Mayo patient has his or her own
`doctor. After the patient IS
`evaluated, other doctors with
`specialized knowledge ahout that
`patients problems join the
`medical team. This becomes the
`patient’s personal Mayo team — a
`team that provides all the medical
`services the patient needs.
`Mayo is the world’s oldest and
`largest multi-specialty group
`practice. Our strength lies in the
`depth of experience and
`
`
`
`Mayo specialists combine
`their expertise to treat
`
`specific health problems.

`the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. Since the days of Dr.
`Will and Dr. Charlie Mayo, we have trained our own
`specialists. teaching them Mayo's thorough, personal brand
`of medicine.
`
`
`
`Dr. Suzanne Connolly, like many other members of the Maya
`slzft teaches students in Mayo Medical School and in Mayo
`
`Graduate School of Medicine, both in the hospitals and in the
`
`classroom. “I have students the first weelr they are in medical
`school. Helping them warlr with patients is like opening a
`
`door for them. In a real sense, I'm still very much a student,
`
`because as an educator I continue to learn and continue In
`study.”
`
`
`
`Mayo’s system is designed to
`offer each patient the highest
`standard of medical care. This
`goal is supported by two activities
`intertwined with patient (are —
`education and research.
`Following the example of Mayo's
`founders, Mayo physicians teach
`and learn. Their minds are
`stimulated and their ideas
`challenged by students in the
`Mayo Graduate School of
`Medicine, Mayo Medical School
`and the Mayo School of Health
`Related Sciences. The students
`work closely with the Mayo
`consulting staff and learn from the
`experiences of these specially
`trained experts.
`At Mayo, doctors are both
`teachers and students. They
`accept a daily invitation to think,
`to learn more about how to help
`their patients. The Interaction that
`education and research create
`promotes a constant exchange of
`ideas. And our patients are the
`prime beneficiaries of this
`exchange of knowledge.

`

`Arizona, in 1987. These are staffed by Mayo-trained
`physicians and connected through telecommunications links
`to Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
`As the practice of medicine
`changes, our ideas about the
`skilled and compassionate care of
`our patients take on new
`dimensions. lhese ideas are
`influenced by two important facts:
`Our location in Rochester requires
`many patients to travel long
`distances for our services; and
`trends in the medical industry
`indicate growth only for those
`large medical institutions that
`provide a wide range 01 care in
`many locations.
`in response to these trends,
`Mayo Clinic is expanding to
`provide Mayo medical care in
`other locations. We have opened
`two new regional group practices
`in cities that are centers of growing
`populations — Jacksonville,
`Florida, and Scottsdale, Arizona.
`Each clinic serves patients in its
`region, providing them with the
`quality medical care that attracts
`patients to Rochester.
`At all locations, the patients

`TRADITION OF GIVING
`
`when the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and
`Research was incorporated in 1915, Doctors Will and Charlie
`Mayo gave most of their personal savings to the new
`organization. Four years later, in 1919, in an act without
`precedent in American medicine, the two brothers
`transferred all of the assets of the Mayo Clinic into an
`endowment to advance medical science. Thus began Mayo’s
`tradition of giving, an essential part of our position in world
`medicine.
`'
`
`Until recent years, Mayo was
`able to support all of its programs
`of medical education and research
`from its own resources. But the
`costs of these activities grew
`beyond Mayo’s means alone, and
`support from private sources has
`been sought.
`Accordingly, contributions are
`welcomed from all who wish to
`participate in extending Mayo’s
`heritage of service. Gifts of all
`sizes from an increasing number
`of friends help ensure the
`continuing excellence of research
`and education so essential to high
`quality patient care.
`
`If you wish to know more about
`Mayo’s programs and opportunities
`to support them, please visit the
`Development Office on the 11th
`floor of the Mayo Building or ask
`your physician. You also may write
`or call W. Eugene Mayberry, M.D.,
`Chairman, Board of Development,
`Mayo Foundation, Rochester,

`Mayo Foundation for Medical
`Education and Research is a
`Minnesota nonprofit, charitable
`corporation. Gifts to Mayo are
`deductible to the full extent
`permitted by existing tax laws.
