In addition, in order to express a compli- caled matter or a shade of meaning, which is hard to be understood from a document, the voice supportis needed.
Turst of all, a case where a switching (transition) [0114] occurs from text challing to voice chatting will be described asa first operational example of the IM-VoIP interconnect- ing system according to this embodiment.

1029 Exhibit: Grinter, R and Palen, L, Instant Messaging in Teen Life 2002

Document IPR2022-00291, No. 1029 Exhibit - Grinter, R and Palen, L, Instant Messaging in Teen Life 2002 (P.T.A.B. Dec. 7, 2021)
However, he shared much in common with the 19 year olds in college, and we chose to include his data in this paper after finding that IM usage characteristics among young people appears to be correlated to increasing autonomy in part as function of student status.
Participants described instances where friends proposed a plan together in a group chat session, sometimes accompanied by simultaneous use of the WWW to gather relevant information, such as film start times.
To this end, P8, who used the family computer in the very public place of his family’s living room, kept all his IM windows minimized on the task bar, relying on alerts to signal that new messages had arrived, which he could then open when his privacy was assured.
The ever-present desire to communicate with friends and be an active part of a social group, coupled with the ability for IM to exist without disrupting domestic environments, are the additional conditions that set the scene for widespread adoption.
We also thank Erin Bradner, Paul Dourish, Dave McDonald, Jonathan Grudin, Jim Herbsleb, and Ellen Isaacs for providing thoughtful and helpful comments on earlier versions of this paper.

The illustrated embodimentincludes an adap- tive feedback module 100, which may be implemented, for example, as software code to be executed by a processor of the server 12 using any suitable computer language such as, for example, Java, C++ or Perl using, for example, conven- tional or object-oriented techniques.
The adaptive feedback module 100 may deter- mine whetherthe individual’s availability informationis, for example, inaccurate or unusable based on information received from the appropriate communication networkswith which the P&A management server 12 interfaces, as described previously.
The indicator module 110 may be, for example, implemented as software code to be executed by a processorof the client terminal 22 using any suitable computer language such as, for example, Java, C++ or Perl using, for example, conventional or object-oriented techniques.
For example, with reference to FIG. 8, the client terminal receives the availability information for Alex, Jonathan, Kit, Corby, Cyndi, Tom, Pete, Roberto, Cecelia, as well as the individuals in the “Mint” folder.
At block 126, for individual k for which the client subscribes to contact information, the indicator module 110 may deter- mine whether an address for each data content type (e.g., telephone, text (IM), video, graphic, audio, etc.) has been transmitted from the P&A management server 12.

Computer-Mediated Play Telecommunication support, often public domain and/or "shareware" programs were provided for distribution to those who connected to BBS's, Today it is estimated that there are over five thousand BES 's operating around the country.
While teleconferences are often concerned with issues, and videotext is a passive delivery of information, BBS telecommunication takes place because users voluntarily and (in most cases) happily communicate.
An analysis of this type of keying behavior may provide insight into the adaptations made to promote individuality and personal expressicn, prime "play" goals according to Stephenson (1967).

Such buddy lists are essentially attributes of the owning user and do not have any autonomous status in the instant messaging system, thus playing only a passive role therein.
For example, when a watched party is not logged onto the internet he or she may allow the presence management system to forward email messages ana faxes.
In another example, an association of building contractors in a certain geographical region might form an aggregate of watched parties in order that they might be easily contactable as a group rather than individually.
The watched party is able to store criteria 14 and rules in the presence management system 10 which are used to determine the manner and type of connection address that is provided.
