Rice cultivation in the United States started in the coastal lowlands of South Carolina, a landmark anthropological offshoot of trading slaves from West Africa into the New World (Carney 2002).
Genomic evidence informs us that the widely divergent U.S. weedy rice populations (Constantin 1960; Noldin et al. 1999; Shivrain et al. 2010) are all descendants of cultivated ances- tors, specifically, O. sativa (Kanapeckas et al. 2016; Reagon et al. 2010).
