`Dynamic Lens
`
`Anthony Van Heugten
`
`Fluid lenses are well known in the art whereby the volumeof fluid within a membrane can be
`increased or decreased by way of an actuator and whereby the corresponding optical power of
`the fluid lens can be increased or decreased in a dynamic and fully tunable manner by causing
`the membraneto changeits curvature, thus creating an optical interface with greateror less
`refractive powerat that interface. With fluid lenses, increased volumeof fluid contributes to the
`dynamic increased positive (plus) optical power, and decreased volumeoffluid contributes to the
`dynamic reduction of positive (pus) optical power and / or increase of minus (negative) optical
`power. However, such fluid lenses have certain draw backs, and mostparticularly is that the
`adjustmentto the optical poweris created by a change in shape of a membrane, whichis difficult
`to control and maintain, and somecases such as creating parabolic or cylinder shapes, impossible
`to achieveto the level of precision desired.
`
`The invention disclosed herein allows for a discreetly adjustable lens comprising a fluid that
`solves /satisfies each of these significant unmet needs noted above. While the invention disclosed
`herein utilizes a fluid, it is the outer curvature of surface 360 ofthefirst lens component 300 and
`notthat of the increased fluid volumethat adds positive (plus) optical power and/ or optical
`powerneededfor near vision. This surface (surface 360) serves as a curvature template which
`dictates the dynamic increase of positive (plus) optical power.
