`Fig. 1 Lens component 300 has an optical surface 360. Placed over the surface of Lens
`Component 300 is a Lid Cover 320. Between Optical Surface 360 and the concaveside of Lid
`Cover 320 is Index Matched Fluid 330. In this configuration, the assembly has no optical power
`(as shown bythelight rays) because the index ofrefraction of the fluid equals that of the lens
`and lid cover.

`
`Fig. 2. Index Matched Fluid 330 is evacuated from the assembly through Fluid Port 340. To
`prevent a vacuum from being formedinside, Porous Plug 350 (made of a material that passesair
`but not fluid, for example made by Porex Corp.), allowsair to enter the space once occupied by
`the Index Matched Fluid. In this configuration, the difference in the index of refraction between
`Optical Surface 360 and the air inside of the cavity is no longer neutral, so Optical Surface 360
`refracts the light in the direction of the arrows, making the lens a positive poweroptical lens.
`Whenthe Index Matched Fluid is pumped backin, the optical poweris eliminated. (The air
`being displaced by the returning fluid passes through the Porous Plug)

`Fig. 3. As an alternative to using a Porous Plugto allow theair to enter the cavity yet keep the
`Index Matched Fluid from leaking out, a Barrier Film 310 may be used.(see Fig. 4 for further
`explanation) A small air passage is created between the Barrier Film and the concave surface of
`Lid Cover 320.

`
`Fig. 4. When Index Matched Fluid is evacuated, Barrier Film 310 conforms to Optical Surface
`360, allowing Optical Surface 360 to perform its optical function without impairing it. Barrier
`Film 310 not only allows the device to function without a Porous Plug, but it also helps to
`prevent contamination to enter the fluid and also to prevent bubbles from forming inside the
`fluid.

`
`Fig. 5. In an additional embodiment, rather than allowing air to fill the space once occupied by
`Index Matched Fluid 330, a Second Optical Fluid 370 of a different index of refraction may be
`pumpedinto the cavity instead. By varying the index of refraction of the Second Optical Fluid,
`the optical power of the lens assembly may be varied. This will allow the same lens components
`to be used in different lenses, each of a different power. In effect, the lens power may be
`“programmed”by selecting a different index of refraction for the Second Optical Fluid. Barrier
`Film 310 not only keeps contamination and bubblesoutofthe fluids, but also serves to keep the
`two fluids apart. It should be emphasized that Barrier Film 310 does not create the optical power
`of the lens,it is the shape of Optical Surface 360, coupled with the index of refraction difference
`that exists at its surface (or lack of thereof) that creates the optical power, which is controlled by
`the fluids.
