`Delmonico s, possibly the most famous name in American restaurant
`
`history, is once again in the news. The latest Version of the restaurant
`opened on Monday in the landmark building at 56 Beaver Street
`(South William Street) in the financial district, which had been
`Delmonicds home since 1890.

`Delmonico's was a precursor and a shaper of today's restaurant
`culture. It was the first American restaurant to print its menu in

`
`French, to present a wine list, to welcome women in the dining room
`and to be a meeting place for the city's power brokers. The restaurant gave its name to the
`rib eye steak and it was where lobster Newburg was invented. In the early to mid—1800's,
`the Delmonico family owned a farm in Queens that supplied the restaurant with fresh
`produce.
`
`- The first Delmonicds was a pastry shop and cafe on William Street, which John and Peter
`Delmonico, who came from Switzerland, opened in 1827. Then followed a succession of
`Delmonico restaurants in lower Manhattan and midtown that followed the social and
`
`financial centers of the growing city as they moved uptown. At one time, in the 1870's,
`there were four Delmonico's restaurants.
`
`But none were in the landmark building with Pornpeian columns flanking the door that
`contemporary New Yorkers think of as Delmonicds. That building was not built until 1890,
`replacing a previous Delmonicds onthe site. It remained a Delmonicds until 1925, then
`was Oscar's Delmonico. It closed in 1990.
`
`The new owners, Robert Ruggeri and Stefano Frittella, who run the Bice restaurant group,
`left the landmark exterior unchanged, of course, but hired Morris Nathanson to design the
`interior in a style that evokes several eras: the dark wood paneling suggests the 1890's, the
`murals call up the 1940's. It's a handsome place, with a dark, clubby bar and some private
`party rooms.
`
`The menu blends Continental and Italian steakhouse fare, with a few contemporary
`
`touches like grilled vegetables with goat cheese, tuna steak teriyaki and creme brulee. Main
`courses are $16 to $29.
