`Clean eating - Wikipedia
`
`WIKIPEDIA
`
`Clean eating
`
`Clean eating is a way of lifemm based on the belief that eating whole foods in
`
`their most natural state and avoiding processed foods such as refined sugar
`
`offers certain health benefits. Variations on the clean eating diet may also
`
`exclude gluten, grainS, and dairy products and advocate the consumption of
`raw f00d_[3][4][5]
`
`used it.[9]
`
`The idea of "clean eating" has been criticized as lacking in scientific evidence
`and potentially posing health risks.[6]
`
`The clean eating concept has been associated in the media with Ella Mills,[7]
`Natasha Corrett, and the Hemsley sisters[8]; although by 2016 Mills and the
`
`Hemsley sisters had distanced themselves from the phrase and said they never
`
`While there is criticism for this trend, there are some positives of this dietary
`
`trend. Some positives from this trend include the increased consumption of
`
`Unrefined whole foods
`
`fruits and vegetables. Most Americans do not get enough fruits, vegetables,
`fiber, and whole grains in their diet, and eating 'clean‘ will result in the consumption of healthier foods. Eating clean will
`also reduce the amount of sugar and ultra—processed foods in your diet, which have been proven to be unhealthy, and can
`lead to a variety of diseases.[1°]

`
`Criticism
`
`The idea of clean eating has been criticized as lacking scientific evidence for its claims, and in extreme cases posing health
`risks by cutting whole food groups out of the diet.[6] It has also been claimed that processed foods have been modified to
`prevent diseases and therefore have some health benefits (in the form of food safety) over a clean eating diet.[“] It has also
`been claimed that a clean eating diet may increase the risk of osteoporosis due to a lack of calcium from dairy products.[6]
`Health risks associated with this diet include food poisoning and diseases from parasites.[12]

`
`Clean eating - Wikipedia
`
`Orthorexia nervosa is a proposed condition where someone is obsessed with healthy eating to the point where it results in
`mental and physical health issues.[13][14] Someone with orthorexia nervosa may suffer from "vitamin and mineral
`imbalances"[15]obsessive—compulsive disorder[13][15], and could show signs of anorexia from a clean eating diet that lacks a
`variety of food sources or fails to provide enough food.[13] The term orthorexia comes from the Greek word orthos
`meaning straight or proper and orexia meaning appetite. This happens when a healthy diet goes to an extreme. While it is
`good to be aware of what you are putting into your body, there is a point where it can become obsessive. People with
`orthorexia often exclude certain foods from their diets because they may see it as "bad". Some warning signs include
`
`compulsive checking of food labels and ingredients, body image concerns, and spending hours per day worrying about
`food. There is no "cure" to this but treatment includes therapy and weight restoration if needed.[16]

`
`When you embark on a real food journey, part of that trip means making sure your family is getting enough the right vitamins and
`minerals. To ensure that we are, most of us take a multivitamin, but beware: not all supplements are created equal. In fact, some
`
`toxic vitamins even contain ingredients that you have probably been trying to avoid.
`
`What should you look out for in supplements? Here is a guide to buying supplements that are not only good for you and your
`
`family but are also free from toxic ingredients.

`
`Toxic Vitamins: How to Pick 3 Supplement that's Clean for Your Family - MAMAVATION
`
`You can find some of the following culprits hiding in popular vitamin supplement brands:
`
`0 Artificial Food Coloring:
`
`While this is certainly no surprise for children’s vitamins like Flintstones Vitamins, I was a bit more surprised to find Blue 2
`
`Lake, FD&C Yellow No.5 Lake, FD&C and Yellow No.6 Lake in One-a-Day, Nature's Bounty, and Centrum’s adult multivitamins.
`
`They are listed as "less than 2%,” but personally, I don't want any of these toxins in my food, since they associated with a host
`
`of disturbing effects on the brain, central nervous system, and health of cells.
`
`. Titanium Dioxide:
`
`The International Agency for Research on Cancer has listed this ingredient as a possible carcinogen. Found in many toxic
`
`vitamins, including One-a-Day, Centrum, Nature Made, Solgar and Nature's Bounty.
`
`0 Soy Lecithin and other hexane-extracted additives:
`
`In addition to being made from GMO soy, this additive often contains solvents. According to Chris Kresser, Lheprocessing
`
`usually Involves hexane [mp:Nchriskresser.com!harmful—or—harmless-soyulecithin). The processing done to remove the
`
`hexane can leave trace amounts. That residue is unregulated by the FDA even though it is listed by that organization as a
`
`potential carcinogen and neurotoxin — meaning there can still be hexane in your vitamins. Flintstones Complete contains soy
`lecithin.
`
`o Mono- and Diglycerides:
`
`As discussed in our peanut butter article (h_ttps:Nwww.mamavationtomiZO1«ti/Crametoxing—unheaIthy-peanut-butters.html),
`
`these additives can contain trans fats. Found in Flintstones Complete.
`
`0 BHT:
`
`This suspected carcinogen is in some supplements, such as Centrum Silver.
`
`0 Maltodextrin and ascorbic acid.
`
`These common ingredients are made from GMO corn. Found in Emergen-C, Centrum, Nature Made, One-a-Day and
`Flintstones.
`
`ORGANIC/NONHGMO VS. NON-ORGANIC
`
`As you can see, GMOs can commonly be hidden in toxic vitamins and supplements, particularly Vitamin B12, 32, C and E. Key
`
`ingredients that signify GMO products in the vitamins include maltodextrin (from corn), ascorbic acid, as well as soy and rice
`
`Proteins Whiles9eplsmsntirigredisms aredisslessd in they-£7. assordins.t9.GMO.Cpmpasstadditives do not nsssssarilx have to.

`co_mpass.o_rg/eng/database/ingredi__en_ts__/__29_4.vit_aminshtml)!’ These additives can be necessary for forming the supplement into a
`capsule or gelcap, or they can be unnecessary additives like colorants.

`WHOLE FOOD SUPPLEMENTS ARE BETTER THAN
`
`SYNTHETIC
`
`Humans were designed to get nutrients from real, whole foods. Unfortunately, most supplements are synthetic and, as such, do
