`North Bay Meeting Recap

`Bipin Almaula, Chevron, 2006 Professional Pr
`sity and more than ha
`Bipin has a great diver
`lf a century of experience
`ticing chemical engineering worldwide. He began his industrial career in
`prac
`1951 after graduating from the Universities of Bombay, Michigan, and Texas,
`at American Potash & Chemicals Corp. For six years, Bipin participated in
`starting up operating and optimizing a new plant for recovery of uranium,
`nickel, cobalt, manganese, and startup of a plant for potash, borax, soda ash,
`salt cake, bromine, and lithium related compounds.
`He went on to a Rare Metals Company, Davidson-Kennedy Associates,
`Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and BOMITE, Inc. Over
`these years he was involved in a fascinating variety of projects. He developed
`energy and a material recovery option from waste tires for the District of
`Columbia, defined the gasification option for energy recovery from waste
`wook and bio-fuels, and was the staff consultant to the director of Energy
`Resources Ltd., Nairobi, Kenya.
`He further managed laboratory and contract research and development of
`micro-channel plate electron multipliers, and transferred the technology from
`research and development to demonstration and commercialization. Bipin
`was also involved in the first hydrocarbon-air fuel cell demonstration,
`managed development of cast propellants, designed soya bean and cottonseed
`solvent extraction plants, and hop-oil fractionation equipment design for
`brewing.
`We were honored to hear the story of Bipins experiences and it was a very
`interesting talk.

`South Bay Meeting Recap
`By Ed Munyak
`The final south bay meeting of the year occurred on Monday, June 25 at the San Jose State University Engineering
`Alumni room. The meal consisted of a fajita buffet.
`Dr. Jennifer Milne, currently an energy analyst at the Stanford Global Climate and Energy Project, presented some of
`her earlier work from the Carnegie Institute of Plant Biology at Stanford University. This work, and that of her coworkers,
`focused on the future of biofuels, specifically what types of plants or future plant modifications are most desirable to
`maximize fuel yield from crops.
`Surprisingly, many of the currently grown fuel crops are not as ideal for fuel usage as more regionally optimized plant
`varieties that are already available without substantial bioengineering. Genetic engineering and breeding efforts to increase
`the amount of cellulose in plants compared to their lignin content are key to increasing the fuel yield per acre and to meet
`future energy requirements.
`This talk definitely shed new light on certain aspects of using plants for energy that are not commonly discussed. It is
`a very interesting field that is rapidly changing and will be a key area for chemical engineers now and in the future.
