`
`BODY:
`
`The Dubliner Irish Pub is smokier than Irish whiskey and noisier than an Irish wake, and it'll be
`roaring this St. Paddy's Day, inside the pub and out.
`
`But it's always crowded and it's always fun, and it might as well be St. Patrick's Day there every
`night of the year.
`
`There's good Irish music on weekends, and there's Guinness and Harp Lager and hard cider on tap —
`- I like the last two combined in a deadly "snakebite" -- and good food, reasonably priced.
`
`"Atkins" may be an Irish name, but he left his diet at the pub door. This is a menu full of breads and
`potatoes and thick gravies. Take comfort.
`
`The corned beef is moist and lean, with a heap of steamed cabbage piled on top of colcannon, which
`are Irish mashed potatoes ($8.75). Though I might have preferred boiled potatoes, because the
`colcannon was a tad dry, it hardly spoiled the meal.
`
`There's no such complaint on the shepherd's pie ($6.95), in which the mashed potatoes are baked
`with a topping of ground beef and gravy, cheese, celery, carrots and onions. Served with a few
`slices of traditional Irish soda bread, it's a good late-night dinner, especially when washed down with
`Guinness or lager.
`
`The Dubliner Irish beef stew (cup $3.95; bowl $5.95) and the Guinness braised beef ($7.95) are as
`alike as Irish cousins. Both are based on lean beef and have a similar rich and stewy taste. The
`former has a few more vegetables, while the latter is more of a complete meal, served with
`colcannon and soda bread.
`
`Bangers and mash ($6.95) is another basic comfort food —- two grilled, moderately spicy sausages
`served with mashed potatoes and gravy.
`
`There are a number of other entrees I didn't have time to try: a grilled salmon; fish and chips; and
`an all-day Irish breakfast ($7.95) described on the menu as two fried eggs, sausage, rashers
`(similar to Canadian bacon), black—and—white pudding (a spicy combination of beef and blood
`puddings -- "an acquired taste," says restaurant co-owner and bona-fide Dubliner Patrick Leavy,
`"it's better to eat than to talk about"), tomatoes, beans and brown bread.
`
`This St. Paddy's Day, Leavy says, the merriment at the Dubliner starts at 10 in the morning with
`Irish step dancers and Irish and rock bands playing outside in the parking lot until 10 at night. Then
`the fun moves back inside the pub and roars until 1 in the morning.
`
`Things might still be looking a bit green after that.

`Friday's festivities
`
`What would St. Patrick make of green beer and all these tents sprouting and pipers gallivanting
`around the Twin Towns? We'll never know, and maybe that's for the best. Regardless, here is some
`of the action slated at Irish pubs for St. Patrick's Day, which, happily for the multiude of celebrants,
`falls on Friday:
`
`Getting a head start on the festivities, the Dubliner Pub (2162 W. University Av., St. Paul, 651-
`646-5551) will open one of the area's largest tents (8,000 square feet) at 5 p.m. Thursday. The pub
`will start serving a champagne continental breakfast at 8 a.m. Friday and will have live music
`indoors and in the tent from noon till closing time.
`
`Like many such establishments, Keegan's Pub (16 University Av. NE., Minneapolis, 612-252-0880)
`will open at 8 a.m. and serve breakfast until 11 a.m. In a tent out back, there will be live music
`from noon till 10 p.m., highlighted by the Sweet Colleens and one of many stops for the Minnesota
`Pipes and Drums.
`
`The tent party at O'Donovan's Irish Pub (700 1st Av. N., Minneapolis, 612-317-8896) starts at 8
`a.m. Friday and runs all weekend. Seamus will perform from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, followed by the Wild
`Colonial Bhoys from 10 p.m. till 2 a.m.
`
`A brunch beginning at 8 a.m. launches a one-year anniversary weekend celebration at O'Ma||ey's
`Irish Pub (1775 Radio Dr., Woodbury, 651-578-7007). There will be pipe and/or drum music in the
`cozy space later in the day, and corned beef and cabbage (not usually on the menu) all day.
`
`At precisely 3:17 p.m., the denizens of Durkin's Pub (227 E. Main St., Anoka, 673-712-0476) will
`decamp for a police-escorted march around the block. The pub's fifth-annual Irish bash also will
`feature live acoustic music beginning at 9:30 p.m. and corned beef and cabbage all day and night.
`
`Music inside and out is on tap at O'Gara's Bar & Grill (164 N. Snelling Av., St. Paul, 651-644-3333).
`Tim Mahoney is the headliner in the tent, from 4 to 6 p.m. (no cover). In the Garage, music begins
`at 3:30 p.m., culminating with G.B. Leighton at 10:30 p.m. (progressive cover charge).
`
`And, of course, Kieran Fo|liard's pubs will be hoppin'. There will be live Irish music from noon till 1
`a.m. at the Liffey (175 W. 7th St., St. Paul, 651-556-1420). Not to be outdone, Kieran's Irish Pub
`(330 2nd Av. S., Minneapolis, 612-339-4499) will offer music in three spaces: the front room (noon-
`2 a.m.), the Titanic Lounge (4 p.m.-2 a.m.) and an outdoor tent (3 p.m.—1 a.m.).

`
`BODY:
`
`John Logan, 59, former head chef at the Ambassador Hotel in St. Louis Park and a founder of the
`Mai Tai restaurant in Excelsior, died of liver disease Tuesday at a nursing home in Portland, Ore.
`
`Logan, formerly of St. Paul, was born in London. His parents were Irish and raised him in Dublin.
`He was a chef in London and a cook in the merchant marine for several years before moving to
`Minneapolis in 1963.
`
`He worked at the Ambassador until he and several other Irishmen came up with the idea to start the
`Mai Tai restaurant, said Logan's daughter Joanne, of Eagan. The group, which included an attorney,
`a builder and a restaurant manager, bought the property where the roller coaster at Excelsior
`Amusement Park had been. Logan left the restaurant in 1982, and it closed several years later. He
`taught cooking classes at Stillwater prison for four years. He was head chef at the Bishop's Lodge in
`Santa Fe, N.M. and a chef in London, and cooked meals for business and first-class passengers on
`United Airlines before moving to Portland six years ago. He cooked at a bar featuring Irish and
`English food until six months ago.
`
`In the early 1970s he did cooking demonstrations on a local television show. He was president of the
`Minnesota chapter of the Sons and Daughters of Ireland and organized many trips there.
`
`Besides Joanne he is survived by daughters Carol Logan, of Dublin, and Michelle Foley, of
`Rosemount; a brother, Paddy Logan, of Cornwall, England, and sisters Bridget Byrne and Patricia
`Stewart, both of Enfield, England.
`
`A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Macalester College Chapel, 1600 Grand Av.,
`St. Paul. A reception will follow at the Dubliner, 2162 University Av., St. Paul.

`"Do you know what I'm going to tell you, he said with his dry mouth, a pint of plain is your only
`man.
`
`"Notwithstanding this eulogy, I soon found that the mass of plain porter bears an unsatisfactory
`relation to its toxic content and I became subsequently addicted to brown stout in bottle, a drink
`which still remains the one that I prefer the most despite the painful and blinding fits of vomiting
`which a plurality of bottles has often induced in me."
`
`Let the narrator of Flann O'Brien's "At Swim-Two-Birds" be a lesson to you: a plurality of bottles be
`they Harp, Guinness, that green-dyed domestic stuff or various types of whiskey will be your friend
`only for a bit. After that they will turn on you like liquid pit bulls.
`
`So you are warned. Enough of that.
`
`Now, on this St. Patrick's Day, let's take a glance around Seattle and see where the action is:
`
`Bal|ard's Tractor Tavern has its annual St. Patrick's Day "Ceili" (KAY-lee, Gaelic for "party"), with
`traditional Irish dancing (8 p.m., $7; 206-789-3599).
`
`Just across the street and down the block a bit, Conor Byrne's will have Irish music going all day
`($5; 206-784-3640).
`
`At the downtown Fado Irish Pub, the fun starts today at 11:30 a.m., with Irish bands and dancers
`going on well into the night ($10 after 1 p.m.; 206-264-2700).
`
`Owl 'n Thistle, 'round the corner from Fado, has its lively house band playing "off and on all day"
`starting at 10 a.m. ($10; 206-621-7777).
`
`Kells in Pike Place Market is another all-day spot, with music starting at noon and going on and on.
`($20, which also gets you a T-shirt; 206-728-1916).
`
`Paddy Coyne's, between downtown and Eastlake at 1190 Thomas St., has a packed music bill
`starting at 5 p.m. ($10; 206-405-1548).
`
`In Magnolia, Mulleady's Irish Pub starts today with traditional Irish breakfast (8-11 a.m.), then has
`music starting at noon ($10; 206-283-8843).
`
`In the University District, Irish Emigrant has green bands starting at 4 p.m. ($10; 206-525-2955).

`
`After March, the Vera Project will be leaving its downtown Fourth Avenue site. A new location at the
