`
`Patent Application No. H10[1998]-189052
`
`[0002]
`[Conventional Technology] Vapor-phase-grown carbonfibers can be produced by thermally decomposing
`carbon compoundsby heatingultrafine particulate metals such as tron andnickel to 800 to 1,300°C as a
`catalyst. This vapor-phase-grown carbon fiber has the characteristic of being easily convertedto a graphite
`structure by heat treatment. For example, graphitized vapor-phase-growncarbonfibers heated at or above
`2,800°C have fewercrystal defects, and the mesh surface of the carbon hexagonallattice develops in a
`tubular shape around the fiber shaft, and the outer surface of the carbon hexagonal lattice develops
`concentrically, like rings ona tree, with similar mesh layers. Therefore, this graphitized vapor-phase-grown
`carbonfiber has high strength and elasticity, and also has high thermal andelectrical conductivity.
`[0003] Examples of applications that utilize the properties of this graphitized vapor-phase-grown carbon
`fiber include a non-aqueouselectrolyte-based secondary battery using the graphitized vapor-phase-grown
`carbonfiber as an electrode active material.
`[0004] Typically, the non-aqueous electrolyte-based secondary battery will have a negative electrode, a
`separator, a positive electrode, and anelectrolyte solution.
`[0005] Materials used in negative electrodes can include carbonaceous materials such as natural graphite,
`artificial graphite, refractory carbon, also called hard carbon, MesoCarbon MicroBeads, pitch-based carbon
`fibers, vapor-phase-grown carbonfibers, etc.
`[0006] Substances usedin the positive electrode can includelithium-containing composite oxides, such as
`lithium cobaltate (LiCoO2), lithium manganate (LiMn2O,, LiMnO:>),lithium nickelate (LiNiO2), etc.
`[0007] Examples of the substance used in the electrolyte include a non-aqueouselectrolyte solution
`obtained by mixing a lithium salt and an organic solvent. The lithium salts can include LiClO;, LiPFs,
`LiBF4, LiAsFs, LiCF3SOs3, etc. Examples of the organic solvent include ethylene carbonate (hereinafter
`sometimes referred to as EC), propylene carbonate (hereinafter sometimes referred to as PC), dimethyl
`carbonate (hereinafter sometimes referred to as DMC), diethyl carbonate (hereinafter sometimesreferred
`to as DEC), and methyl ethyl carbonate (hereinafter sometimes referred to as MEC).
`[0008]
`[Problems to be Solved bythe Invention] In recent years, non-aqueouselectrolyte-based secondary batteries
`with high energy density and excellent cycle characteristics have attracted attention as large-scale batteries,
`such as batteries for electric vehicles and household powerstorage systems.
`[0009] Incidentally, in general, in the case of overcharging lithium-ion s
