`Officials from Gibbs Amphibians on Feb. 7 unveiled the Phibian, a 30-foot-long boatwith retractable wheels
`that can be driven on roads at highway speeds andachieve 30 mphon water. Switching betweenthose
`vastly different operating areas takes less than 20 seconds.

`a shallow harbor wherethetide wentouta long way,Jenkinssaid.

`Gibbs searchedin the United Kingdom and UnitedStatesto obtain the right people and technologies, he
`said.

`“The team that’s been assembled over 15 years encompassesthecreativity of the Kiwis andthe ingenuity of
`the Brits and the industry of the USA,”Jenkinssaid.

`The company,based in AuburnHills, Mich., has spent more than $200 million developing its products,
`dedicated more than 2 million hours’ worth of engineering time to those efforts and patented more than
`100 inventions.

`Besidessolving the technical challenges of high-speed amphibiouscraft, the companyalso faced the
`discipline of turning them into real products, Jenkins said. Gibbs has producedeight distinctly different
`products since the company'sfounding,he said.

`Recent naturaldisasters, such as HurricaneKatrina, the tsunami in Japan andflooding in Australia,
`demonstrate the needfor such vehicles, Jenkins said.

`The Phibian, whichis 8.3 feet wide and about 12 feettall, is constructed largely from strong,lightweight
`carbonfiber and cancarry up to three crew membersand 12 passengers. Only one personis needed to
`operatethe vehicle, which has a ground clearance of 14 inches, said Orest Ukrainsky,vice presidentof sales
`and manufacturing-commercial.

`While seemingly top-heavyto the casual observer, the vehicle is designed to be hardto capsize, he said. The
`vehicle is propelled in the waterby twin waterjets andis designed to beeffective in shallow depths,officials
`said. The Phibian’stires retract up out of the water to reducedrag.

`Besides drastically reducing the time neededto place the vehicle in the water, the Phibian eliminates the
`needfor separate boats andtrailers, companyofficials said.
`
`The Phibian on display was a prototype and companyofficials hope to begin production soon.Prices for the
`vehicles, which can be customizedfordifferentusers,will be set this summer,Ukrainskysaid.
`
`While the company will market the Phibian to emergency-response, law-enforcementand military clients,
`the vehicle also could be ideal to transport equipmentfor offshore industry, he said.
`
`A 20-foot-long amphibiousvehicle, the Humdinga,alsowill be offered by Gibbs andis designed for
`operations on roughterrain in remotelocations,officials said.
`
`Impressive as the Phibian’s demonstration was, another Gibbs product capturedthe fascination ofcivilians
`present. The Aquada,whichlookslike a wide,tall, convertible sports car, can achieve 100 mphon land and
`30 mph on water.
`
`Thevehicle, which drawsallusions to the Roger Moore's submersible Lotus Esprit in “The Spy Who Loved
`Me," hasthreeseatsin front, with the driver's positioned in the middle for balance.
`
`“It's probably the only vehicle with a bilge pump and a stereo system,” Ukrainskysaid.
