An Introduction to Proton Prisma Mobile Profile (MP)
`
`Proton Prisma MP is a SIM-based solution targeted at mobile phone operators and their mobile
`commerce partners. Using Proton Prisma MP on a JavaTM-based SIM will enable the delivery of
`next generation secure m-commerce services.
`
`Proton Prisma MP adds three powerful value propositions to the standard SIM functionality:
`
`1.It brings a high level of security to the SIM that protects the mobile phone operator’s own
`applications and also offers bank-level security for financial applications residing on the same SIM card
`2.It offers a truly multi-application card platform, based on open industry standards, with uniform
`card and application management from personalisation to application downloads.
`3.It supports secure mobile commerce applications, including strong authentication (Public Key-
`based) and secure payments.
`
`Proton Prisma MP supports multiple security domains on one SIM. This means that the SIM card
`issuer can "host" business applications from third-party partners in designated areas of the SIM,
`each with its own security rules (key management) and application management, as may be required.
`This dramatically boosts value-added relationships between operators and third-party partners
`(e.g. financial institutions) to promote mobile commerce services.
`
`Key benefits for operators
`The use of a highly-secure platform allows the operator to secure the SIM, reducing fraud (e.g.
`pre-paid top-up) and offering access to a range of secure added-value services (e.g. home banking,
`paid-for information, etc.).
`Reduced SIM infrastructure cost through a higher degree of SIM vendor independence, guaranteed
`application interoperability and a common SIM personalisation and application management infra-
`structure (even in Over-the-Air dynamic use).
`Additional revenue from allocating SIM space to third-party applications (e.g. financial, loyalty,
`information, etc.), increased network traffic, new expanded client-base and reduced customer
`churn, due to multiple uses of the cards.
`
`Technology
`Proton Prisma MP will be available on JavaTM-based, PK-enabled SIMs from the major SIM suppliers.

`The core of Proton Prisma includes
`CALC, the multiple-application platform that is Proton World’s implementation of the
`Open Platform 2.1 specifications
`a Java Virtual MachineTM and an RSA security module.
`ETSI-compliant SIM functionality and toolkit.
`
`ASPIC is Proton World’s generic cryptographic toolbox that supports RSA, DES and AES, and which
`provides very flexible development tools for PK-based applications, such as WIM. These applications
`are typically developed as Java applets, known as Vipers, either by the operator or one or more of the
`business partners, each within their own security domain, but relying on the same card resources,
`thus saving precious EEPROM space (see diagram below).
`
`The Proton Mobile Toolkit enhances the standard SIM Toolkit with specific features for screen
`management, communication protocols, cryptography and user administration.

`
`Strong Authentication
`Public-key based applications can be implemented using a dedicated VIPER or WIM.
`Typical examples are:
`"top-up" of a pre-paid service subscription
`secure access to a server-based wallet (mobile, 3D model)
`mobile banking
`secure macro-payments (e.g. on-line debit): by combining this with the "top-up" operators can offer
`their customers a direct, secure means of buying pre-paid service subscriptions.
`
`Micro-Payments
`Electronic purses are a simple yet secure means of payment for mobile, pay-per-use information and
`entertainment services. The secure e-purse application can reside on the SIM.
