`Objects and Advantages
`
`Microphoneport of most computers including Pocket PC allows only one
`cannel recording (from microphone). Recording two or more channels of data via
`the microphoneport is advantageous for many reasons. Standard multiplexing
`methods do not work since microphone port has a hardware highpass and
`lowpassfilters. We have developed a method in which multiple channels can be
`transmitted into the computer via microphone port using multiple frequency
`bands. Modulation occursin the hardware using a setof carrying frequencies,
`resulting signal is transmitted into microphone port, demodulation occurs in the
`software. This method can be used, for example,to transmit audio signal from an
`electronic stethoscope andelectrical signal from EKG into a computervia a
`single microphoneport.

`Principles of operation
`
`The methodof transmitted multiple channels of data into the computervia
`microphone port using multiple frequency bands is explained here on the
`example of transmitting 2 channels of data: one channel of audio and one
`channel of EKG. The resulting device is Phonocardiograph with simultaneously
`acquired EKG.
`
`In the hardware:
`1. EKG is a low frequency signal (0.5 to 300Hz). Use one pole lowpass with
`cutoff at 500Hzto filter EKG.
`2. Modulate (that is multiply) EKG with a sinusoidal 10,000Hz signal. This signal
`can be either derived from hardware oscillator or supplied by the computervia
`audio output.

`3. Lowpassfilter audio signal with one pole 3000Hz cutoff
`4. Add EKG and audio
`5. Send signal to mic port
`
`In the computer use softwareto:
`7. Extract audio by using lowpassfilter with 3000Hz cutoff
`8. Extract modulated EKG by using highpassfilter with 8,000Hz cutoff
`9. Demodulate EKGsignalby first multiplying modulated EKG by sinusoidal
`10,000Hz signal
`10. Second, extract EKG byfiltering the resulting signal with a lowpass with
`500Hz cutoff

`INVENTION CLAIMS
`
`WECLAIM:
`
`1. The method of transmitted multiple channels of data into the computervia
`
`microphoneport using multiple frequency bands.
`

`In the method of claim 1 microphone port can bein the desktop, notebook,
`
`Pocket PC or other computers.
`3. One channelof data of claim 1, for example audio data, does not need to be
`
`modified or modulated.

`4. Data from all other channels of claim 1 have to be modulated with the use of
`
`multiple carrying frequencies.

`5. The choice of carrying frequency of claim 4 is based on the bandwidth of
`data. Carrying frequencies mustbe distributed over the microphoneport
`allowed frequency range in such a mannerthat neither frequency band
`
`interferes with any other frequency band.

`6. One carrying frequency of claim 4 can be supplied by the audio output of the
`
`computer.

`7. Adevice that combines a stethoscope and electrocardiograph (EKG) that
`
`allows the medical practitioner to perform simultaneous auscultation and
`
`electrocardiography can be built using the method of claim 1.

`In the device of claim 7 unmodulated audio signal and EKG modulated with

`the use of a carrying frequency are added and transmitted to the microphone
`
`port. Demodulation occurs in the software.

`In the device of claim 7 modulation and demodulation can occur in real time.

`10. In the device of claim 7 both phonocardiogram and EKG can bevisualized

`on the samescreen.

`12. The method of claim 1 can be usedin the device that transmits sound

`recordings from 2 or more channels into a computer via a single microphone

`13. In the device of claim 12 the cannels can carry signals from multiple audio

`sensors positioned on the body, every channel modulated by its own carrying

`14. The method of claim 1 can also be used to transmit low frequency signal,

`that is signal below 20Hz, for example EKG, into the microphoneport of the
`
`computer.

`15. In the device of claim 14 the signal if modulated by the carrying frequencyin

`the hardware, then transmitted into the computer, and demodulatedin the
`
`software.
