`The Vehicle Interface Specification is part of the AMI-C Release 1 Specification
`Set.
`
`Release 1 specifications are not the definitive source by which AMI-C compliant
`components are to be designed and constructed, but they do serve as the
`foundation for the continuation of specification development activities and
`provide a method for identifying and resolving any discrepancies and
`deficiencies that may be present.
`
`The specification set resulting from the next phase of development will provide
`the “build-to” requirements for ensuring the interoperability, expandability and
`upgrade-ability of AMI-C compliant components.
`
`Introduction
`
`This document describes the services provided by the vehicle interface in a
`system that is compliant with the Automotive Multimedia Interface
`Collaboration, Inc. (AMI-C) specification. There are two levels of interfaces
`defined for each vehicle service: 1) a network application layer message set,
`and 2) a software application programming interface (API). These interfaces
`are defined in detail in AMI-C SPEC 3002, Common Message Set, and Vehicle
`API documents.
`
`The network application layer interfaces are defined in Release 1 of the AMI-C
`Specification. The software interfaces for these services are to be defined in
`the next specification release.
`
`Vehicle services are separated into a number of groups, covering different
`functional areas. Within each group, there may be several levels of service. If
`the group is implemented by the vehicle interface at a given level, all of the
`services defined for that level must be present. One group -- the core group --
`must be present in all AMI-C compliant systems.
`
`1. Scope
`
`The physical and electrical requirements for the AMI-C side of the vehicle
`interface, including network connectors and power moding, are specified in
`Section 5 - Vehicle Interface Physical / Electrical Specification.

`Vehicle interface requirements for the original equipment manufacturer (OEM)
`are the responsibility of the OEM and are not specified in this document. This
`document also specifies mandatory and optional services provided by the
`vehicle interface to components, via AMI-C compliant networks.

`4. Specification
`
`4.1. Requirements for Compliance
`
`The features and functions that must be present in a vehicle interface are
`indicated in this document. Specifically, a vehicle interface must support at
`least one of the AMI-C compliant network interfaces defined below, and must
`support the set of core vehicle services defined in Section 6.
`
`Beyond this set of core functions, no specific functions or signals are required to
`be present in a vehicle by this document. If the optional features or signals
`described in this document are provided by the vehicle interface, they must be
`provided in the manner described in this document.
`
`The vehicle interface need not provide interfaces to more than one network,
`regardless of the number of networks in a vehicle. However, if it does provide
`interfaces to multiple networks, then it must support the bridging function
`described in either AMI-C SPEC 3004, 1394 to IDB-C Gateway Specification, or
`AMI-C SPEC 3005, IDB-C to MOST Gateway, between each pair of networks
`for which it provides an interface.
`
`4.2. Vehicle Requirements
`
`The vehicle side of the vehicle interface is not specified by AMI-C. However,
`certain inputs and outputs must be passed between the vehicle and the vehicle
`interface, in order to implement the services specified in this document. How
`these are passed between the vehicle and the vehicle interface (e.g., on an
`OEM proprietary network or as hard-wired signals) is up to the implementer.
`
`A table listing the required inputs and outputs from the vehicle side is given in
`Appendix B to this document, but it is intended for informational use only.
`
`Different implementations of the vehicle interface or different vehicle
`architectures may require a different set of signals from the vehicle. For
`example, vehicle configuration information, such as the VIN (vehicle
`identification number) number, may be obtained from a module on the OEM
`network or may be encoded in a ROM in the vehicle interface itself.

`5. Vehicle Interface Physical / Electrical Specification
`
`The vehicle interface must conform to the AMI-C Physical and Electrical
`Specifications, as defined in AMI-C SPEC 4001, Physical Specification. This
`document should be consulted for a detailed description of the specifications in
`this section.
`
`5.1. IDB-C Interface
`
`The vehicle interface may provide an IDB-C interface. The connector and
`electrical specifications for this interface are described in AMI-C SPEC 4001,
`Physical Specification.
`
`5.2. High-Speed Network Interface
`
`The vehicle interface may provide a high-speed network interface (this will
`either be IEEE 1394b or MOST). The connector and electrical requirements of
`this interface are described in AMI-C SPEC 4001, Physical Specification.
`
`The vehicle interface shall provide at least one network interface to either IDB-C
`or a high-speed network. If both an IDB-C interface and a high-speed network
`interface are present, then the vehicle interface must incorporate the
`functionality of the IDB-C to high-speed network gateway, as defined in AMI-C
`SPEC 3004, 1394 to IDB-C Gateway, or the AMI-C SPEC 3005, MOST to IDB-
`C Gateway. This functionality should be viewed as logically distinct from the
`vehicle interface functionality. It is not covered in this document.
`
`5.3. Power and Ground Interface
`
`The vehicle interface supplies power to the devices connected to the AMI-C
`compliant system through the vehicle interface connector set. The requirements
`for this power supply are detailed in AMI-C SPEC 4001, Physical Specification.
`
`5.4. Boot Sequence
`
`Normally, the vehicle interface should be the first component to boot in an AMI-
`C compliant system. In any case, it must boot independently of any other
`components in the system, as other components may require information from
`the vehicle to complete their boot.
`
`Some anti-theft devices, for example, require the VIN to be available when a
`component boots. Furthermore, some components may also require vehicle
`configuration information to boot correctly.

`The vehicle interface is also responsible for managing the P-Mode line on each
`network. The P-Mode line must be set to ON when the vehicle power state
`goes to ON or to certain signals from the attached networks (reference AMI-C
`SPEC 4001, Physical Specification, “Power States” and “P-Mode Line
`Operation” sections.)
`
`Following the transition of the P-Mode line to ON, there may be a network reset
`on each attached network, during which the network is configured (physical
`addresses assigned and network topology identified). This process may be
`managed by the vehicle interface or it may be managed by another node on the
`network. However, it should be handled by the vehicle interface, unless the
`alternate node is a mandatory component of the network in question on all
`vehicles on which the network is installed.
`
`Following network reset, there is a discovery phase, in which services offered
`by each component on the network are published in the network. The vehicle
`interface must announce the core vehicle services and any optional services
`that it supports to each attached AMI-C network at the beginning of the
`discovery phase.
`
`If the vehicle interface module is serving as a bridge between two or more AMI-
`C networks, it will also be required to publish the services that it discovers on
`the first network to the second, and vice versa. However, the vehicle services
`must be published prior to, and independently of, the cross network services.
`
`The following diagrams show, respectively, the Power Mode State Transitions,
`and the vehicle interface actions during reset. The first figure is from AMI-C
`SPEC 4001, Physical Specification. The second illustrates the vehicle interface
`process described above.

`This section describes the services that are provided by the vehicle interface to
`nodes on an AMI-C compliant network. The services described as “core
`services” must be provided by any vehicle interface. The remaining services are
`optional, but if they are provided, they must conform to the descriptions given in
`this specification.
`
`In this specification, sections at the fourth level of numbering represent the
`smallest level of granularity, at which optional services may be implemented. If
`a vehicle interface implements any services in a section, it shall implement all of
`the services in that section. For example, the services in section 6.2.3.3 – High
`Resolution Odometer – are optional, but if a vehicle interface implements any
`service in this section, it must implement all of the services in that section.
`
`The description of these functions as IDB-C messages, 1394 messages or
`MOST messages is not covered by this document. For that description, refer to
`the Vehicle Interface ASN.1 message set definitions (AMI-C SPEC 3002,
`Common Message Set).

`There are several types of services:
`
`A request-reply service consists of a request to the vehicle interface for
