`
`
`Highlights of the accomplishments during tenure as the Chair of the Bioengineering
`Department at UT Arlington
`
`
` Raising Research Funding – The level of annual research funding secured by the
`Department faculty has risen from $0.3 million to $3.76 million, a 12.5-fold (i.e., 1250%)
`increase.
` Securing National Ranking – For the first time in 35-year history of the Bioengineering
`Department, the Department was ranked 57th by U.S. News and World Report.
` Increasing Faculty Size – The number of tenured and tenure-tracked faculty of the
`department was doubled.
` Expanding Student Enrollment – the population of the graduate students in the
`Bioengineering department has grown by 5-fold (i.e., 500%).
` Developing B.S. Degree Program – Established a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering
`degree in the Bioengineering Department in 2012. First cohort graduated in May 2016.
` Elevating the Bioengineering from Program to Department Status – In 2005, a led a
`successful effort and elevated the status of the Bioengineering from Program to the Department.
` Securing New and Expanded Space Allocation - The Department has more than tripled
`its allocation of research and office space. Further, the Department is now housed in the
`newly completed (2011) Engineering Research Building which has state-of-the-art
`laboratories, offices, and classrooms.
` Establishing Areas of Research Focus and Growth for The Department– Through
`direct and active involvement of the faculty, consensus was built to adopt Tissue
`Engineering and Optical Medical Imaging as two areas of research focus. The
`implementation of this vision has significantly raised the research funding, national
`recognition, and recruitment of highly qualified faculty and students into the Department.
` Establishing UT Arlington Optical Medical Imaging Laboratories on UT
`Southwestern Campus – A sum of $2.5 million in congressional appropriation was
`secured to create the Optical Medical Imaging Laboratories for UT Arlington faculty on
`UT Southwestern Campus. These labs are now successfully in operation. They provide
`the Bioengineering faculty members and students with a valuable opportunity to work
`side-by-side with clinicians and expand research and training collaborations.
` Developing Dual Degree B.S. in Physics and M.S. in Biomedical Engineering
`Program – By collaborating with the Physics Department in the College of Science at
`
`
`
`
`ResMed Inc. Exhibit 1004
`
`

`

`UT Arlington, a Fast Track dual degree program has been developed and implemented.
`The program takes advantage of credit savings provided in the Fast Track program which
`allows counting limited number of graduate credit hours toward undergraduate credit and
`vice versa.
` Developing Dual Degree B.S. in Biochemistry and M.S. in Biomedical Engineering
`Program – To expand cross-departmental and multidisciplinary training, in collaboration
`with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UT Arlington, a Fast Track B.S.
`in Biochemistry and M.S. in Biomedical Engineering dual degree program has been
`developed and put into operation. The program utilizes the credit savings allowed under
`Fast Track program.
` Adding New Medical Imaging Option to the Five-year Dual Degree B.S. in Biology
`and M.S. in Biomedical Engineering – In collaboration with the Biology Department, new
`curricula were developed to add this new option to the dual degree program that had been in
`existence since 1998. With this addition, the students can choose between the Medical Imaging
`or previously developed Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering option.
` Adding Protein Engineering Track – In collaboration with UT Southwestern Medical
`Center at Dallas, a new doctoral study track in designing and manipulating proteins has
`been developed and implemented.
` Implementing a Joint Tri-institution Graduate Program in Bioengineering –
`Working collaboratively with the UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (UTSW)
`and UT Dallas, plans are being developed to integrate UT Dallas into the joint graduate
`program that UT Arlington and UTSW has had since 1974.
` Contributing to Identification of High Potential Multidisciplinary Research and
`Education area for the College of Engineering – Chaired a committee of several Chairs
`of other departments, Directors, and Associate Dean of Engineering to identify the most
`promising multidisciplinary
`initiatives for
`the College of Engineering. Nano-
`bioengineering was identified as an area of with the highest promise.
` Establishing a Bio-safety Level 2 Laboratory – As part of renovating laboratory space,
`a Bio-safety level 2 laboratory was for the first time established in the Department to
`allow experimentation with cancerous cells.
` Establishing the first Bioengineering Teaching Laboratories –Two new laboratories
`for physiological measurements and optical medical imaging were established by internal
`funds as well as Laboratory, Equipment, Repair, and Rehabilitation (LERR) funds.
