`Letter from the editor

`
`of the country caught casino fever, friends and readers have asked meall sorts of questions as
`they planned their gaming vacation. Where should we stay? Where should we eat? Who has the
`best shows? What's the one thing we shouldn't miss?
`In the beginning, they were simple questions to answer, as the choices were fairly limited. But as
`the years rolled by and new resorts opened, my answers changed.Instead of giving one or two recom-
`mendations,| found myself spouting a list of 10 or 20 choices, suggesting different attractions for
`different age groups, budgets and personality types. “You must go here, and you'll definitely enjoy
`that, but avoid this, and don’t miss that.” Or, “while you're at X, your wife can be at Y, so leave the
`kids at Z, and regroup an hourbefore dinner.” .
`| was beginning to feellike a cruise director.
`As 1999 drew on, we began thinking of ways to celebrate the ensuing millennium. Fresh from
`Jeffrey Compton * Bob Dancer
`the openings of Bellagio, Mandalay Bay and Venetian,| thought that a special “Best of the Best”
`Stacy Herriott

`lots for
`anewmillennium
`
`by Frank Legato
`
`Aetheslotmachinewasinventedinthe1890sand
`
`took its classic three-reel form early in the century, it
`wasn’t until the early 1980s, when Randy Adamsapplied the
`“virtual reel” technology developed by Ingar Telnausto a slot
`for Universal, that the modern, computerized slot was born.
`With a random numbergenerator program picking reel results
`and a computerized stepper motor stopping the reels where
`the computerinstructed, the stage was set for theslot revolu-
`tion that has virtually redefined the modern casino.
`The once-lowly slot machine has been transformed from
`a humble gambling device into an entertainment medium.
`Slots are now computer games that pay money;theslot floor
`is an amusement arcadefor adults.
`With the staggering variety of slots the world has seen for
`the past 25 years, identifying the standouts was not an easy
`task. There are, no doubt, great games that we have not
`included below. Be that as it may, here are our picks for the
`“Slots of the Millennium,” from all the major slot manufactur-
`ers (listed alphabetically by manufacturer).
`
`Every time an “advance” symbol lands on
`the reels, the player's wagon moves. A.C.
`Coin’s signature sound effects provide enter-
`tainment while the race is going on, but we
`love the hit frequency even more.
`
`Empire
`One of A.C. Coin’s most popular games,
`Empire sports a top box resembling the
`Empire State Building, with a miniature goril-
`la scaling the wall toward a “bonus zone.” Sep-
`arate bonus amounts are awarded for reach-
`ing the top “floors” of the building within a
`specified time period. The newest version of
`this game, “Empire King,” replaces the “bonus
`zone” with a random bonus amountof up to
`1,000 coins, and a new reel symbol sends the
`figure directly to the top for an instant honus.
`
`
`
`A.C. Coin and Slot
`MacSeelig launched A.C. Coin and Slot back in the ‘70s, to
`coincide with the dawn of the Atlantic City casino industry.
`The company has remained the exclusive East Coast distribu-
`tor of IGTslots, while building a reputationofits own for pro-
`vidinginteriorslot signs, stools and furniture to Atlantic City
`casinos,
`
`Bonus Road Rally
`Bonus Road Rally was A.C. Coin’sfirst foray into game devel-
`opment, Basically, it's a bank of slots hooked to an overhead
`race between miniature cars. Numbers on each slot stool cor-
`respond to numbers on the race ears. “Advance” symbols on
`the reels of the primary game move thatplayer's car in a race
`toward a bonus zonefor a payment of up to 150 coinsy The
`game was introduced first at Trump Taj Mahal in a 10-unit
`dollar bank, but achieved widespread popularity after its
`introduction in a quarter version with five competing cars.
`
`Chuck Wagons
`This reel-spinner includes an Old West scene in the top box,
`and a bonus round race between miniature Conestoga wagons.

`Isle of Pearls
`This games takes the bonus climb concept to
`the sea, with a diver headed downward, toward
`the bonus“pearls”at the bottom.Isle of Pearls also features beauti-
`ful artwork that creates a holographic effect in the top box.
`
`Action Gaming
`Action Gaming introduced its very first slot product less than
`two years ago, but that product was so revolutionary that it
`catapulted the company—morespecifically, game inventor
`Ermest Moody—te instant success. That groundbreaking slot
`game, conceived and developed by Moody and built by IGT,
`was Triple Play Poker. Moody had been looking for a way to
`applythe principles of multi-line video to a video poker game,
`and foundhis answerin Triple Play, patenting the concept of
`multi-hand poker.
`
`Triple Play Poker
`Triple Play Poker is regular video poker, times three. At least
`three coins must be played to fullyactivate the multiple-hand
`feature, The playeris faced with three five-card poker hands—
`two face-down, one face up. He makes his hold decisions as
`normal on the face-up hand. Cards held in the face-up hand
`appear in each of the hands. The draw is then madefrom three

`hand concept, including Five Play Poker, Ten Play Poker,
`and, most recently, Fifty Play Poker.

`realistic sound effects. The player
`gets several “frames” to attempt to
`makestrikes or spares. A computer
`track ball lets you actually aim the
`bowling ball on the screen.

`Anchor Gaming
`Tic Tac Disco
`The player wins coins by completing
`Anchor Gaming was originallya slot route operator in Nevada,

`round.) About every 50 spins, a spe-
`development of the secondary “Wheel of Gold” bonus game,
`cial symbol enacts the bonus round, An “X” and an “O” flash in
`which led to a partnership with IGT to produce “Wheel Of For-
`sequence until the player presses a button, filling in the appro-

`priate space on the board. Each spot on the board also has a

`coin amountaccording to how fast you getatic tac toe.
`Clear Winner
`This was one of Anchor Gaming's first slot games. The concept
`is simple—take a standard slot game and putit in a transparent
`cabinet. Anchorplaced the gamein creative displays—Transpar-
`ent Plexiglas towers with bubbling waterinside. This is a prime
`example of how presentation alone can take a normal slot game
`and make it special.
`
`
`
`Monkey Business
`This new game, produced in partnership with CDS, was
`expected to debut at Resorts in Atlantic Cityby the end of the
`year. It is a multi-line
`video slot on the CDS
`“Bandit” multimedia
`platform, available in
`an entire linked bank of
`machines with
`a
`themed “jungle” dis-
`play. The bonus round
`is based on an Anchor
`spinning wheel that
`includes bonus mullti-
`plier amounts ranging
`from 2X to 25X, three
`monkey symbols, and one “Witch Doctor” symbol. The object
`isto accumulate multiplier amounts—which multiplythe play-
`er’s bet—before landing the Witch Doctor,
`
`Pinball
`This game is available with base games byeither IGT or Bally.
`Atop the base gameis an actual pinball machine, manufactured
`by Williams. Bonus awards are accrued as the ball hits various
`points on the pinball machine. A “Play Pinball”reel symbol
`sends the pinball sailing. The onlything missing is a flipper but-
`ton, which would makeit a skill game,
`
`Totem Pole
`This gamestacks three sets of reels on top of each other, The
`first three coins activate thefirst set of reels; the fourth through
`sixth coins operate the second set; the seventh through ninth
`coins activate the third set reels and the chance at an IGT
`“MegaJackpots”multi-site progressive prize. Special symbols on
`the reels, whenlined up together on the payline, pay according
`to a separate bonus pay table. Three of the special symbols onall
`three reels wins the progressive jackpot.
`
`WheelOf Gold
`This was the gamethatstarted the entire craze in bonusslot
`machines. A base game byBally or Sigma is equipped with a
`roulette-style wheel. A “spin the wheel” symbol on the third
`reellights up a button, and the player spins for a bonus pay-
`ment, The newest version is called “Wheel Of Gold Money
`Multiplier.” This slot format also served as the basis for one
`of the most popular slot gamesofall times, the Anchor/IGT
`joint-venture game “WheelOf Fortune.”
`
`Aristocrat Leisure Industries
`Founded in Sydney, Australia in 1954, Aristocrat is the
`world’s second-oldest and second-largest slot manufacturer.
`Aristocrat's biggest market is its native Australia, where it
`fills the “private club” casinos with its multiline video games.
`In fact, Aristocrat was the pioneer of multiline videoslots,
`which were popular in Australia long before they became a
`craze in this country. They are called “pokies” down there, a
`name derived from the poker symbols that make up manyof
`the line pays. Aristocratis credited with beginning the multi-
`line video craze in this country, when it introduced its first
`multiline video slots with second-screen bonus gamesin the
`Native American gaming jurisdictions during the mid ‘90s.
`
`Strike It Rich
`This is Anchor's first game produced in partnership with Sili-
`con Gaming on the “Odyssey” multimedia platform, The bonus
`game is bowling, with incredible three-dimensional video and

`the word “coin” or the word “gift.” “Coin” generates a random
`bonus amountof up to 2,500 coins. “Gift” offers the player a
`choice of packages that garner oneto 10 free spins. Anyjackpots
`hit during the free spins are tripled.
`
`Wild Cougar
`This was thefirst Aristocrat game to be offered in a nine-line for-
`mat, with bets of up to 90 coins per spin. The optionof betting
`up to 10 coins per pay line was brand-new to U.S.players, but the
`game was popular immediately. In Atlantic City, Wild Cougar
`was the first game to break through the casinos’ aversion to the
`nickel denomination.
`
`Atronic
`Long before Silicon Gaming wowed the industrywith its comput-
`er-generated 3-D images, Atronic was producing video slots with
`stunning graphics. But it was the buyout of the companyby a
`huge German amusement game manufacturerin 1994that
`enabled the export of Atronic’s games worldwide. Since then,
`American casino patrons have been treated to videoslots featur-
`ing incrediblyrealistic three-dimensional images, synchronized
`sound, and some of the most innovative second-screen bonus
`games to be found anywhere.
`
`Desert Racer
`Released at the sametime as the popular Volcano Island (see
`below), Desert Racer offers the same sharp 3-D graphics with a
`completely different second-screen bonus game. Three or more
`triggering symbols switch the screen to a desert scene with five
`dune buggies lined upata starting line. If three symbols trigger
`the screen, the player chooses one racer; four symbols allow the
`player to pick tworacers; five symbols and the player picks three.
`Theplayeris paid a bonus according to hawhiscars finish.
`
`
`
`Chicken
`This gamesignaled a new era
`for Aristocrat, an era in which
`the creativity and humorof
`the company’s game develop-
`ers has been unleashed to
`create some of the most
`entertaining slots ever seen.
`What makes Chicken special
`is a hilarious second-screen
`bonus round. The screen
`switches to a highway scene,
`with several cartoon chickens
`on one side of the road and
`the “Hooter Bar” on the other side. The chickens cross the
`road one-by-one, dodging speeding trucks as they go. The
`player receives a bonus for each chicken that crosses the road
`without gettingflattened.
`
`Jumpin’ Joeys
`This is a multiline video slot with the sametype of lucrative bonus
`feature popularized by Penguin Pays (see below), In this case, the
`bonus symbol
`is a
`“Joey”—Australian
`slang for a kangaroo.
`With the propertrig-
`gering reel combina-
`tion, the Joey appears
`in each reel position
`consecutively and acts
`as a wild symbol for
`
`that payline.
`
`K.G. Bird
`This game has a fun theme centered around a “caged” bird in
`striped prison garb. Instead of a second-screen bonusfeature,
`the bird characteris wild. The bonus feature is triggered by three
`scattered firecracker symbols, which automatically pay double
`the total numberofcoinsbet.
`
`Penguin Pays
`The innovative bonus feature on this multiline video slot madeit
`instantly popular. When a coin and a snow-capped mountain
`symbol appearin the left and right reels, the game’s penguin
`character goes to work. The reelresults for that spin freeze, and
`the skating penguin character appears in each of the 15 reel sym-
`bol positions, Each timeit appears, it acts as a wild symbol, and
`any resulting winning combination is paid according to the per-
`line bet ofthe triggering spin.
`
`Trick Or Treat
`This Halloween-themed game has been one of Aristocrat’s most
`popular slots, It is a five-line game with ghosts, witches and Jack-
`O-Lanterns as reel symbols. Scattered skeleton symbols trigger a
`
`
`
`
`
`
`Desperado
`This slot takes the two-tiered bonus feature from the popular
`Sphinx (see below) and places it in an Old Westsetting. Trig-
`gering symbols switch the screen to a ghost town. The player
`moves his “gun” to one of the
`locations and presses a button to
`“shoot” it. Four of the targets hide
`coin amounts. One of the loca-
`tions hides the word “bank.” If
`that one is selected, the screen
`switches to the interior of the
`town bank, and the player is
`prompted to select one of five
`dynamite fuses to crack the
`bank’s vault,
`
`
`
`
`
`
`Pirate’s Cove
`This gameis one of Atronic’s most popular, thanks to a uniquely
`clever second-screen bonus game. Thetriggering symbols switch
`the screen to a desert island.A pirate with a shovel stands behind
`a row of “X” marks on the beach. Using the wager buttons, the
`player presses a “dig” button and the pirate digs up the treasure
`chest, which opens to reveal the bonus.

`This Egyptian-themed videoslot
`was thefirst game introduced by
`Atronic with a “two-tiered” bonus
`feature. Triggering symbols switch
`the screen to the interior of a
`pharaoh’s tomb. Five sarcophagi
`are lined up for the player. Four of
`them hide bonus coin amounts;
`one hides the entrywayto a third
`screen—a second bonus“tier.”If
`the player chooses that sarcophagus, another chamber opens to
`give the player a choiceof high-level bonus amounts.
`
`Volcano Island
`This was the game that introduced Atronic to America. The
`three-dimensional image offive spinning reels is synchronized
`with the sound of mechanical reels spinning and snapping into
`place as they stop. Three or more triggering symbols switch the
`screen to a sceneof several volcanoes. Theplayer uses the touch-
`screenfeature to select a volcano, which erupts in bonuscoins.
`
`Bally Gaming
`The Bally Gaming unitof Alliance Gaming,Inc. is the granddad-
`dyofall slot manufacturers. Founded in Chicago duringthe early
`1930s, the former Bally Manufacturing, Inc. was named afterits
`first product, a pinball gamecalled “Ballyhoo.” After joining a
`handful of established manufacturers in the slot machine busi-
`ness during the ‘40s, Bally soared to the top of the business by
`the 1960s through a parade of innovations, includingthefirst
`coin hoppers, the first electro-mechanical slots to light up the
`casino floor, thefirst dollar slots, and the first slots to use com-
`puterized components. After ceding market share to currentslot
`leader IGT during the ‘80s, Bally has recaptured muchofits past
`glory with another paradeof innovations, including the Game
`Maker multi-gameslot format, the Feature Frenzy line ofvideo
`slots, and the Game Magicline of multimedia videoslots.
`
`Black & White 5 Times Pay
`The original “Black & White” gameis a traditional slot machine
`with a simple paytable, a high hit frequency and a unique look—
`black and white with red letters, making it stand out amid banks
`of colorful slot machines. This newer version adds multiplying
`wild symbols to the mix.
`
`Blazing 7s
`‘The idea of including multiple “7” combi-
`nations on a reel-spinning slot may not
`have originated with Bally, but Bally was
`the company that madethis type ofslot
`famous. Blazing 7s maybe the most popu-
`lar Bally reel-spinning slot game of all
`time. The most basic version of this game
`includes three “7” combinations. However,
`Bally has released a host of versions, some
`with as manyas five or six “7” combina-
`tions. The newest, called “Blazing 7s Times
`Pay,” includes multiplying wild symbols.
`
`
`
`Diamond Line
`This is one of the best descendants of the
`Blazing 7s game. It features four basic “7”
`combinations to generate the same type of
`frequent jackpots as the original Blazing 7s
`game, but the twist here is a second payline on which you can
`land any of those “7" hits. The diamond shape formed bythe
`top-and-bottom middle reel positions and the middle posi-
`tions on the outerreels is a winning payline for “7” hits. The
`paytable includes higher amounts for each “7” combination in
`a diamond shape.
`
`Game Magic
`After Silicon Gaming introduced its groundbreaking
`“Odyssey”slot in 1996, Bally produced a multimediaslot plat-
`formto rival it. Its Game Magicfeatures a collection of clever
`games with television-quality video, graphics and stereo
`sound, including “Let’s Make A Deal,” a joint-venture game
`with Shuffle Master that incorporates the sights and soundsof
`the legendary game show.

`A triggering symbol sends the gameinto a 3-D bonus screen that
`presents the player with a dart board and several darts. Using the

`This gameis themed with images from thestory of Aladdin, with
`jackpot symbols reminiscent of the movie of the same name. The
`“Prince” symbolis wild, substituting for any ofthe poker symbols
`(Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten). The scatter-pay symbol is
`Aladdin's Lamp—three or more scattered lamps trigger the sec-
`ond screen, the “Wake the Genie” game. A genie lamp appears on
`the screen, andplayeris promptedto “rub”it. The genie appears
`in a coud of smoke with the bonus award, whichis anywhere
`from 10 to 100 times the total bet.
`
`Roaring ‘20s
`‘This gameprovesthata traditional three-reelslot game with few
`high-tech bells and whistles canstill makefor a great play experi-
`ence, The sound systemplays ‘20s-style “flapper” music while
`the reels spin to frequent winning combinations—thehit fre-
`quencyis 37.41 percent onthis game, or a win of some kind every
`twoto three spins. Three “Roaring 20s” symbols send the game
`into a random free-spin mode. To the sound of ragtime music,
`the reels spin until they hit the three triggering symbols again,
`paying 20 coinsfor each time theyspin.
`
`Roll The Dice
`This was thefirst “game-within-a-game”slot to be conceived
`and developed solely by Bally Gaming, andit is one of the best
`games in this genre. A Blazing 7s slant-top base gameis
`hooked to a giant top box, including a chamberwith three
`aver-sized dice seemingly suspended in mid-air. The chamber
`is ringed by bonus multiplier amounts from 1X to 10X. Whena
`“Roll The Dice” symbollands onthe third reel, the dice spin
`and the bonus multiplier amounts flash in sequence. The
`bonus is based on the sumofthe dice times the multiplier
`amount, for a top bonus of 4,000 coins.
`
`CDS Gaming
`Las Vegas-based Casino Data Systems is a relative newcomerto
`the slot-making business. Its biggest success so far has been its
`“Bandit Series” multimedia slots, including last year’s “Bingo
`BonusSlots” andthis year’s new“Monkey Business” interactive
`bonusslot, produced in partnership with Anchor Gaming(see
`above).
`
`Bingo BonusSlots
`This game was launched in Atlantic City, where thereis no live
`bingo in the casinos, The game has an oversized, oblong video
`screen split between a giant bingo card and
`video reels. The player chooses a bingo configu-
`ration to aim forat the begin-
`ning of play. Numbered
`halls are among thereel
`symbols, and anytime one
`lands that matches a num-
`ber on the bingo card, the 3-
`D imageoftheball leaps from the
`reel and “daubs” the card. When a bingo
`is achieved, the screen transformsinto floating bingo balls, and
`the playerselects one for a bonus.
`
`
`
`Bomb Shell
`This is one of the best games in the CDS “XTremeSeries” group
`of multiline video slots. The gamecarries a clever World WarTI
`bombertheme, its logo depicting the typical pin-upgirl stenciled
`on the front of a vintage B-29. The second-screen banus gameis
`a skyscape with warplanes flying across the top. The player uses
`the touch-screen feature to select falling coins for bonus
`amounts. Selected coins burst to reveal bonus amounts until the
`playerselects one that turns into a bomb.
`
`Safe Buster
`This was CDS’ first joint-venture project, a “game-
`within-a-game”slot produced in partnership with
`Anchor Gaming. Most of the top box is taken up
`by a huge safe dial bearing eight combination
`numbers. Beneath the dial is an L.E.D. screen
`with the words “LEFT/RIGHT/LEFT”at the
`bottom. The abjectis to crack the safe for a mul-
`tiplied jackpot. With every losing combination
`on the reels, the safe dial moves either left or
`right to a number,at random.If that numberis
`the first of the three numbers in the pre-deter-
`mined safe combination,it lights up on the
`L.E.D. screen. When the playerlights up all
`three numbers in the combination,
`in
`sequence, the safe is “cracked,” causing the
`reels to spin automatically until a winning
`combination lands. The L.E.D. screen then
`displays a random jackpot multiplier
`amount ranging from “4X” to “LOX” to
`determine the player’s bonus, which can be
`as high as 40,000coins.

`Top Dog
`Another “XTreme Series” multiline video slot, Top Dog features
`a clever canine theme with funny cartoon images—a pooch tak-
`ing a bath, a mutt with his dish begging for food, an angrybull-
`dog with a bone, the dogeateher, the dogcatcher’s badge, and a
`terrified mailman in mid-stride. The bonus gameis a scene simi-
`lar to the classic poker-playing dogs painting. The player touches
`the screen to pick one of the dog characters, who reveals his
`handacross the bottom. Theplayer is paid a bonus according to
`the rank of the hand, with a royal flush netting the top bonus of
`2,500 coins.
