`6 DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART
`
`Partitions are frequently used to subdivide spaces: or create more intimate spaces.
`[0002]
`7
`8 Typically such partitions are rigid, or have rigid frames, or are formed from rigid interconnected
`panels and they are relatively large, heavy, and cumbersome. and therefore ~fficult to set-up,
`9
`10
`take down, store, and transport.
`
`11
`12
`
`13
`14
`1 S
`
`(0003] Moreover, the inherent rigidity of such partitions limits the extent_ to which they can
`be dynamically extended (or contracted) and reshaped to suit varying spaces·and requirements.
`
`Additionally, such partitions are typically fonned from opaque panels which inhibit
`(0004)
`the transmission of light, therefore necessitating increased use of, or rearrangement of artificial
`lighting to restore adequate lighting levels.
`
`In domestic, working, and public environments it is frequently desirable to be able to
`[000S]
`16
`subdivide space on a temporary basis. For example, visitors may require a t~mporary sleeping
`17
`area, office workers may need to convert an open plan area into temporary meeting space, trade
`18
`show participants may need to demarcate a temporary display area, and desi~ers may need to
`19
`20 _ create a temporary backdrop for a designed area, such as in a window display in a retail setting,
`in a showroom, or in a theatrlcal setting. For these types of applications, a p~tion that is rigid,
`21
`.
`'
`22
`heavy, and/or cumbersome may be costly to transport, difficult to set up/take down, and may
`23
`require significant storage space. A partition that is rigid will also place significant constraints
`24
`on the ways in which a given space can_ be partitioned, limiting its functionahty. A partition that
`is fully opaque will severely disturb natural lighting.

`It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a partiiion in which the ·

`above disadvantages are obviated or mitigated.
`
`SUMMARY OF TIIE INVENTION
`
`According therefore to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a
`[0007)
`partition having a plurality of laminar panels fanned from a flexible flaccid material. Each panel
`has a pair of oppositely-directed major faces with face~ of adjacent panels being inter-connected
`to provide a lattice structure upon movement of the faces away from each o~er. Each one ofa
`pair of supports is provided at opposite ends of the partition co~ected to respective ones of the
`faces. The supports are self-supporting to provide rigidity to the partition. · Jn this way, the
`.
`supports may be moved apart to expand the lattice and extend the overall length of the partition.

`Referring therefore to Figure 1, a partition 10 comprises a core 12 and a pair of
`(0017]
`4
`supports 14, 16 at opposite ends of the core 12. As can best be seen from Figures 2 and 3, the jl
`S
`core 12 is formed from a plurality of panels 18. The p~els 18 each have a p~ of oppositely•;
`6
`directed major faces19, 20, and are formed from.a flexible flaccid material. in the prefened
`::
`7
`embodiment, the material forming the panels 18 is standard white, flame ret~dant tissue paper;
`8
`having a weight of approximately 13.Slbs (500 sheets @24"x 36"""' 13.Slbs). Each panel has~ ,.
`9
`l O height h and a width w which may be adjusted to suit particular environmenfil. Typically the ;:
`height will be in the order of2 metres and the width in the order of30 centimetres. Adjacent '.,
`11
`panels 18 are inter-connected to one another at spaced intervals that altemat~ across the width ~f :

`the face of the panel. As indicated in Figure 2, the connection between panels 18a and 18b is :·
`14
`through a series of parallel, laterally-spaced strips 24 on the face 19 of panel' 18b. The strips 2~
`15
`16
`
`,.

`
`are defined by stripes of adhesive, which connects the panels 18a, 18b to on~ another, as sho(cid:157)

`
`Similarly, the inter-connection between a panel 18b and 18c is through spaced
`[0018)
`parallel strips 28 on the face 19 of panel 18c which are offset from the strips; 24. Each of the
`panels 18 is therefore ~ltemately connected to the panel 18 on opposite side~ so that, as shown:in :
`
`:,
`
`Figure 3, upon extension of the panel in a horizontal direction, a lattice stru~ture having voids :,o ;
`is formed within the core. The voids 30 extend vertically from top to botto1'1'.1 of the core 12 w\µt .

`panels 18 are connected so as to form vertical pleats on the exterior faces of:the core 12.

`An end panel 18d of the core is connected to respective ones of the supports 14 an¢

`typically a felt material which has a degree of flexibility but also has sufficient rigidity to resi~t
`collapse of the core 12. In a typical application, the felt is a l .95 nominal poW1ds per square y~•

`12 has a surprising degree of flexi'bility to accommodate different configurati~ns and allow an ::
`appropriate shaped and sized partition to be installed in an otherwise open space.
`
`(002S]
`The provision of the supports 14 and 16 also pennits a pair of partitions 10 to be
`joined end-to-end as shown in Figure 6. As may be seen from Figure 6a, a pair of partitions l d: is
`erected and positioned with opposite ends adjacent one another. The loop and hook strips 34 ~
`adjacent supports are then brought into contact with one another as shown in Figure 7 so that t~e
`partitions 10 are joined in seriatim. The additional thickness provided by the double support a~:
`the intersection enhances rigidity, with the supports 14 at the free ends ofth~partition being
`::
`folded upon themselves to provide stable support.
`
`After use of the partition, it is simply necessary to reverse the procedure by movin3,'

`the ends towards one another, unfolding the supports 14 and 16, and collapsing the core to its ;,
`11
`12 minimum size. It may then be stored and used when subsequently required.
`
`In the above embodiments, the core has been made from a paper material, althoughj~t
`[0027]
`13
`-will be apparent that alternative materials may be used that fulfil the functional requirements. ::
`14
`. 1 S For example, it is possible to utilize a non~woven textile material such as a plastic material
`,.
`lmown as Tyvek from DuPont which is both teat and water resistant. With s~ch a core materi~,
`16
`i'
`the supports 14 may be made of a felt or may be made from the plastic material of increased
`17
`thickness. The support would be sufficiently flexible to allow folding to def'.me the tubular
`18
`19
`support structure at eac~ end with fasteners such as the loop and hook strips 34 incorporated o~
`20
`· the support.
`
`:
`
`21
`
`. (0028] Whilst a translucent material is preferred, it will be apparent that opaque or different
`coloured materials may also be utilized. The dimensions of the void 30 maybe adjusted to suit
`22
`particular applications. It has been found in practise that a spacing between stripes 24, 28 in u;:e
`23
`order of SO millimetres is appropriate and that the width of the stripes 24, 28 -- between 1 or 2:
`24
`25 millimetres. This arrangement provides a flexible structure with extensive elongation to provide ·
