`
`PROTECTING YOUR INVENTION OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES
`
`Since the rights granted by a U.S. patent extend only throughoutthe territory of the United States and have no
`effect in a foreign country, an inventor who wishes patent protection in another country must apply for a patent
`in a specific country or in regional patent offices. Applicants may wish to consider the filing of an international

`application under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). An international (PCT) application generally has the same
`effect as a regular national patent application in each PCT-member country. The PCT process simplifies the filing
`of patent applications on the same invention in member countries, but does notresult in a grantof "an international
`patent" and doesnoteliminate the needof applicantsto file additional documents and fees in countries where patent
`protection is desired.
`
`Almost every country has its own patent law, and a person desiring a patent in a particular country must make an
`application for patent in that country in accordancewith its particular laws. Since the laws of many countries differ
`in various respects from the patent law of the United States, applicants are advised to seek guidance from specific
`foreign countries to ensure that patent rights are not lost prematurely.
`
`Applicants also are advised that in the case of inventions madein the United States, the Director of the USPTO must
`issue a license before applicants can apply for a patent in a foreign country. Thefiling of a U.S. patent application
`serves as a request for a foreign filing license. The application's filing receipt contains further information and
`guidance asto the status of applicant's license for foreign filing.
`
`Applicants may wish to consult the USPTO booklet, "General Information Concerning Patents”(specifically, the
`section entitled "Treaties and Foreign Patents") for more information on timeframes and deadlinesfor filing foreign
`patent applications. The guide is available either by contacting the USPTO Contact Center at 800-786-9199, or it
`can be viewed on the USPTO website at http://“www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html.
`
`For information on preventing theft of your intellectual property (patents, trademarks and copyrights), you may wish
`to consult the U.S. Government website, http:/Avww.stopfakes.gov. Part of a Department of Commerceinitiative,
`this website includes self-help "toolkits" giving innovators guidance on how to protectintellectual property in specific
`countries such as China, Korea and Mexico. For questions regarding patent enforcementissues, applicants may
`call the U.S. Governmenthotline at 1-866-999-HALT (1-866-999-4258).

`
`FIELD OF THE INVENTION
`
`[0005]
`
`Thefield of the present invention generally relates to mounting systems and, more
`
`particularly, to support assemblies and mounting systems for mounting photovoltaic modules or
`
`panels on sloped support surfaces such as, for example, sloped building rooftops, or the like.
`
`BACKGROUNDOF THE INVENTION
`
`[0006]
`
`There is a need for a sloped roof solar mounting system that attaches to rafters or roof
`
`supporting members, avoids using rails or struts, and is universal.
`
`[0007]
`
`Solar panels must be secured to the roof and underlying structure to disperse wind and
`
`snow loadsinto the building structure. Although some mounting systemsthat avoid using rails
`
`attach to the roof decking, they do notattach to the roof rafters because the spacing ofraftersis
`
`different than the length of modules.
`
`[0008]
`
`Rails and struts are long extrusionsor roll-formed strips that must be cut to length, use
`
`excess material, are costly to manufacture and high in shipping cost. Therefore, a mounting
`
`system avoiding the use of rails or struts is desired.

`
`DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTSOF THE INVENTION
`
`[0030]
`
`In FIG. 1, a support bracket of the core design of the mounting system isillustrated.
`
`The support bracket swivels around the lower mounting hole location. The lower mounting hole
`
`is made to accept a commoninexpensive lag bolt and seals underneath and on top ofthe lag bolt
`
`hole with EPDM washers. Upperhole is threaded to accept screw.
`
`[0031] A lower clamp of the core design of the mounting system is shown in FIG. 2. A nutis
`
`riveted onto the hole of the lower clamp to provide threads for a screw that compresses the clamp
`
`and mounts to support bracket. Panels rest on horizontal wings. Vertical walls keep the upper
`
`clamp in alignment, even when the same clampis used as an end clamp.
`
`[0032] An upper clamp of the core design of the mounting system is depicted in FIG. 3. The
`
`upper clamp has a notch for the end and midskirt to clip into. Vertical walls align with vertical
`
`walls of lower clampillustrated in FIG. 2. Advantageously, the adjustable clamping assembly
`
`comprising the upper and lower clamps allow the module coupling device to be attached to any
`
`photovoltaic module or panel of any thickness without requiring a custom profile.
`
`[0033]
`
`In FIG. 4, an end skirt of the core design of the mounting system is illustrated. In one
`
`embodiment, the end skirt is made of polymer. The small vertical walls of the end skirt clip
`
`down onto upper clamp of FIG. 3. The end skirt closes out south row of modules to improve
`
`aesthetics of system.
`
`[0034] An overall assembly view of the core design of the mounting system is depicted in
`
`FIG. 5. The mid skirts and end skirts improveaesthetics of the completed photovoltaic array.
`
`No clamps or hardware is seen from ground. Airflow aroundthe array is permitted. A side view
`
`of the south row of the assembly is shown in FIG. 6. In FIG. 7, a side view of the clamp between
`
`the first and second rowsis shown. In FIG. 8, an orthographic view of the south row is shown,
`
`while in FIGS. 9 and 10, close-up orthographic viewsof the south row are provided that further
`
`illustrate the details of the assembly support brackets and compression clamps. A side view of
`
`the south row of the assembly showing a compression clamp that attaches adjacent modules
`
`together is depicted in FIG. 11, while a side view betweenfirst and second rows of modules in
`
`the assembly is shown in FIG. 12. FIG. 12 shows the compression clamp attaching adjacent
`
`modules together.
`
`[0035]
`
`The module attachment devices shown in FIG. 13 are similar to the core designs, but
`
`incorporate the support bracket into the clamp. The parallel slots in the base of the combined

`support bracket/clamp provide north/south adjustability. The base of each combined support
`
`bracket/clamp can attach to flashing as shownin the core design, or can attach to a hangerbolt.
`
`[0036]
`
`The module attachment device shownin FIG. 14 is similar to the design illustrated in
`
`FIG, 13, but the support bracket is built-in. The clamp securing the support bracket to the
`
`module and the compression clampis built into one part. The clamp shown attaches between
`
`adjacent panels holding the corner of 2 to 4 modules at once. Clamp is long enoughto reach at
`
`least one roof support beam/rafters/trusses. Lag bolt is drilled through horizontal slot into rafter
`
`or roof support member.
`
`[0037]
`
`The module attachment device shownin FIG. 15 is a similar conceptto thatillustrated
`
`in FIG. 14, but the L-bracket attaches to the lower vertical surface and is secured with a nut
`
`sliding in the lower channel. This provides adjustability vertically and north/south andusesless
`
`material.
`
`[0038] Although the invention has been shownand described with respect to a certain
`
`embodiment or embodiments, it is apparent that this invention can be embodied in many
`
`different forms and that many other modifications and variations are possible without departing
`
`from the spirit and scopeofthis invention.
`
`[0039] Moreover, while exemplary embodiments have been described herein, one of ordinary
`
`skill in the art will readily appreciate that the exemplary embodiments set forth above are merely
`
`illustrative in nature and should not be construedas to limit the claims in any manner. Rather,
`
