`Thefield of the present invention generally relates to mounting systems and, more

`particularly, to support assemblies and mounting systems for mounting photovoltaic modules or

`panels on sloped support surfaces such as, for example, sloped building rooftops, or the like.

`There is a need for a sloped roof solar mounting system that attaches to rafters or roof

`supporting members, avoids using rails or struts, and is universal.

`snow loadsinto the building structure. Although some mounting systemsthat avoid using rails

`attach to the roof decking, they do notattach to the roof rafters because the spacing ofraftersis

`Rails and struts are long extrusionsor roll-formed strips that must be cut to length, use

`In FIG. 1, a support bracket of the core design of the mounting system isillustrated.

`The support bracket swivels around the lower mounting hole location. The lower mounting hole
`
`is made to accept a commoninexpensive lag bolt and seals underneath and on top ofthe lag bolt

`hole with EPDM washers. Upperhole is threaded to accept screw.

`[0031] A lower clamp of the core design of the mounting system is shown in FIG. 2. A nutis

`riveted onto the hole of the lower clamp to provide threads for a screw that compresses the clamp

`and mounts to support bracket. Panels rest on horizontal wings. Vertical walls keep the upper

`comprising the upper and lower clamps allow the module coupling device to be attached to any

`photovoltaic module or panel of any thickness without requiring a custom profile.

`1. A mounting system for supporting a plurality of photovoltaic modules on a support surface,

`said mounting system comprising:

`a support surface attachment device, said support surface attachment device configured to

`attach one or more photovoltaic modules to a support surface; and

`a module coupling device, said module coupling device configured to couple a plurality
`
`of photovoltaic modules to one another.

`2. The mounting system according to claim 1, wherein said support surface attachment device

`comprises a support bracket member and a clamping member.

`3. The mounting system according to claim 2, wherein said support bracket memberofsaid
`
`support surface attachment device comprises a lower portion and an upper portion, said upper
`
`portion connected to said lower portion by a diagonally extending connecting portion.

`4. The mounting system according to claim 3, wherein each of said lower portion and upper
`
`portion of said support bracket memberis provided with an aperture disposed therethrough.

`5. The mounting system according to claim 2, wherein said clamping memberof said support
`
`surface attachment device comprises a lower clamp portion and an upper clampportion, said

`upper clamp portion connected to said lower clamp portion by a fastening device.
