`
FPCB(Flexib

`
`Detailed description of the invention
`
`Purpose of the invention
`
`
`Art to which the invention belongs and prior art of the field
`The present invention relates to a mobile communication terminal display device; more
`particularly, it relates to a mobile communication terminal display device aimed at achieving
`greater slimness by furnishing a polarizing layer on one side of an LCD panel in an LCD protective
`window.
`
`Recently, in the display screens of image reproducing devices or various information terminals,
`liquid crystal display (LCD) panels have been widely used that use liquid crystal, which is a
`material having a regular molecular arrangement and fluidity as well as birefringence and optical
`anisotropy.
`
`Because such an LCD panel can be operated with a low power supply and is capable of being made
`slim, it is highly useful for portable imaging devices. Recently, LCD panels have come into
`widespread use for display screens of mobile communication terminals; as mobile communication
`terminals become smaller, demand has grown for slimmer LCD panels and LCD display devices
`using the same.
`
`The following describes an exemplary structure of a display device used for the display screen of
`such a mobile communication terminal.
`
`FIG. 1 is a cross section that shows the structure of a conventional mobile communication terminal
`display device. As shown, a display device (1) comprises an LCD panel (10) and a protective
`window (20) that protects the LCD panel (10).
`
`In the center of the LCD panel (10), a liquid crystal layer (12) is furnished into which has been
`injected a liquid crystal material having a regular molecular arrangement and fluidity; molecular
`orientation layers (14a, 14b) enclose the liquid crystal layer (12) on both sides. On the outside of
`the molecular orientation layer (14b), an electrode (16) is installed so as to selectively apply a
`voltage to the liquid crystal layer (12) in order to change the molecular arrangement of the liquid
`crystal layer (12).
`
`
`
`
`
`In addition, a front polarizing layer (18a) is stacked on the outside of the front molecular
`orientation layer (14a), and a rear polarizing layer (18b) is installed on the outside of the electrode
`(16) outside the rear molecular orientation layer (14b). A light guide plate (17) is furnished
`between the rear polarizing layer (18b) and the electrode (16), and, on one end of thereof, an
`illumination source (30) is provided that enables illumination of the LCD panel (10).
`
`In addition, a reflecting plate (19) or the like is furnished on the outside of the rear polarizing layer
`(18b), and the incident light from the illumination source (30), which is refracted through the light
`guide plate (17), is totally reflected so that the LCD panel (10) may be illuminated from behind.
`
` A
`
` protective window (20), for protecting the LCD display screen and the LCD panel (10), is
`installed on the front of the front polarizing layer (18a) where the LCD display screen is exposed.
`
`However, a mobile communication terminal display device having the configuration as described
`above has the following drawback.
`
`
`
`
`
`
`- 2 -
`
`
`
`
`Laid-Open Patent 10-2004-0079535
`
`
`In the conventional mobile communication terminal display device (1), because the front and rear
`polarizing layers (18a, 18b) are both installed on the LCD panel (10), the problem arises that the
`LCD panel (10) becomes thicker. Consequently, both the display device (1) that uses the LCD
`panel and the mobile communication terminal that uses the display device become thicker.
`
`Technical problem the invention is intended to solve
`
`
`To solve the problem described above, an object of the present invention is to implement a mobile
`communication terminal display device aimed at achieving a slimmer LCD display device and
`terminal by reducing the thickness taken up by the polarizing plate of the LCD panel.
`
`To accomplish the above objective, the present invention aims at slimming the LCD panel and the
`mobile communication terminal using the same by furnishing the front polarizing layer of the LCD
`panel with and in the protective window of the LCD display screen.
`
`Configuration and action of the invention
`
`The mobile communication terminal display device according to the present invention, having
`been devised to achieve the above object, comprises: an LCD panel comprising a first polarizing
`layer that transmits only light that has been polarized in a particular direction; a protective window
`installed to protect the LCD panel and furnished with a second polarizing layer that transmits only
`light polarized in a particular direction.
`
`The second polarizing layer can also be so installed such that it is inserted into a concave groove
`formed on one surface of the protective window.
`
`The second polarizing layer can also be fully inserted when the protective window is being formed.
`
`The second polarizing layer can also be prepared from a polarizing film.
`
`The polarizing film inserted into the concave groove can also be formed of a material having
`adhesive strength such that it does not detach from the concave groove.
`
`The polarizing film inserted into the concave groove can also be attached by an adhesive means
`so that it does not detach from the concave groove.
`
`In the present invention having the configuration described above, the LCD panel may be made
`slimmer through a structure in which: the second polarizing layer is inserted into the protective
`window that is installed in order to protect the LCD panel; or the second polarizing layer is inserted
`into the protective window when the protective window is being formed; or the like.

`
`
`
`A configuration of a preferred embodiment of a mobile communication terminal display device
`according to the present invention, having the configuration described above, will be described in
`detail below with reference to the attached drawings.
`
`FIG. 2 is an exemplary cross section of a mobile communication terminal display device according
`to the present invention, and FIG. 3 is an exemplary chart illustrating the slimming of the mobile
`communication terminal display device.
`
`As shown in FIG. 2, a mobile communication terminal display device (100) according to the
`present embodiment comprises an LCD panel (110) and a protective window (120) furnished with
`a front polarizing layer (120a).
`
` liquid crystal layer (112), into which a liquid crystal material is injected, is furnished in the
`center of the LCD panel (110), and molecular orientation layers (114a, 114b) are stacked at the
`front and rear of the liquid crystal layer (112) so as to enclose it. For the front and rear molecular
`orientation layers (114a, 114b), a material such as glass may also be used to enable a uniform
`arrangement of liquid crystal molecules.
`
`An electrode (116), which changes the molecular arrangement of the liquid crystal layer by
`selectively applying a voltage to the liquid crystal layer (112), is placed behind the molecular
`orientation layer (114b).
`
` A
`
` A
`
` light guide plate (117) that refracts light that is incident from the outside is placed behind the
`electrode (116); an illumination source (130) is installed on a side or edge of the light guide plate
`(117) and serves to illuminate the LCD panel (110). As an illumination source, the mobile
`communication terminal display device (100) is equipped with an LED, which is an element that
`emits light, on one edge of the light guide plate (117).
`
`To ensure that only light polarized in a predetermined direction reaches the liquid crystal layer
`(112), front and rear polarizing layers (118, 120a) are installed on the outside of both of the
`respective molecular orientation layers. In this embodiment, the rear polarizing layer (118) is
`installed outside the light guide plate (117). On the outside of this rear polarizing layer (118), a
`reflecting plate (119) is installed to totally reflect light that is refracted from the light guide plate
`(117). Depending on the embodiment, the reflecting plate (119) may be formed integrally with the
`rear polarizing layer (118).

`
`
`The light the LED emits is then refracted by the light guide plate (117) and becomes incident on
`the reflector (119); because this incident light is totally reflected by the reflecting plate (119), the
`LCD panel (110) can be illuminated from the back to the front.
`
`In addition, in the mobile communication terminal display device (100) according to the
`embodiment of the present invention, a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) (140) is installed at
`the edge of the LCD panel (110) to create a structure that is able to transmit an image signal to the
`LCD panel (110).
`
`Next the structure of the front polarizing layer (120a) and the protective window (120), which is
`installed in order to protect the LCD display screen and the LCD panel (110), will be described .
`
`The outer surface of the front molecular orientation plate (114a) constitutes a display screen of a
`product equipped with the LCD display device (100); a protective window (120) is installed on
`the front of the LCD panel in order to protect the LCD display screen and LCD panel (110).
`
`In an embodiment of the present invention, to ensure that only light that has been polarized in a
`predetermined direction may be transmitted through the liquid crystal layer (112), a polarizing film
`is inserted into the protective window (120) and serves as the front polarizing layer (120a).
`
`In other words, a concave groove is formed on one face of the protective window (102) (the face
`facing toward the LCD panel), and a polarizing film that forms the front polarizing layer (120a) is
`inserted into the concave groove that has been formed.
`
`The concave groove in this case is formed so as to have such a depth that the polarizing film that
`has been inserted does not protrude beyond it.
`
`In addition, the inserted polarizing film is attached by an adhesive means such as an adhesive or a
`tape having adhesive strength so that it does not detach from the concave groove.
`
`In addition, as a further embodiment, when forming the protective window (102), the polarizing
`film that forms the front polarizing layer (120a) may be fully inserted into the protective window
`(120).
`
`As shown in the chart in FIG. 3, in the mobile communication terminal display device (100), it is
`apparent that by using the protective window (120) on which the front polarizing layer (120a) is
`furnished, the thickness of the LCD panel (110) can be reduced by the thickness of the front
`polarizing layer (120a).
`
`For example, with regard to the approximate thickness arrangement of the display device (120)
`used in the mobile communication terminal, the thicknesses of the polarizing films that form the
`
`
`
`
`front polarizing layer (102a) and the rear polarizing layer (118) are each 0.2 mm, the glass
`molecular orientation plates (114a, 114b) on both sides are each 0.5 mm, the film is 0.1 mm, and
`the light guide plate (117) is 0.8 mm.
`
`It will be apparent that the LCD panel (110) may be made slimmer in the present embodiment
`because the front polarizing plate (120a) is inserted into the protective window (120), and as a
`result the thickness of the LCD panel (110) is reduced by 0.2 mm, which is the thickness of the
`polarizing film that forms the front polarizing layer (102a).
`
`In the present invention, as a result of furnishing the front polarizing layer (120a) in and with the
`protective window (120) that protects the LCD panel (110), it is possible to reduce the thickness
`of the LCD panel (110) by the thickness of the front polarizing layer (120a), thus enabling
`slimming of the LCD panel (110) and the LCD display device (100).
`
`It will be evident that the protected scope of the present invention is not limited to the above
`embodiments but is defined by the claims and encompasses various modifications and adaptations
`that a person of skill in the art may carry out without departing from the matters set forth within
`the claims and the scope of equivalence.
`
`Effect of the invention
`
`The present invention, which has the configuration described above, has the effect that the
`thickness of the LCD panel is reduced by the thickness of the front polarizing layer, because out
`of the polarizing layers on both sides, at least one is furnished on the protective window.
`
`In addition, slimming the LCD panel makes it possible to make slimmer not only the LCD display
`device, but also the image display device such as a mobile communication terminal or PDA that
`uses the LCD display device.
