`The smart watch include nontransitory memory storing computer executable code that
`
`when executed by one or more processors cause the one or more processors to
`
`determine if the monitored heart rate and activity measurements represent an advisory
`
`condition for recording an ECG, and to generate and send notification signals when an
`
`advisory condition for recording an ECG is determined.

`
`FIELD OF INVENTION
`
`BACKGROUND
`
`[0002]
`
`The presently claimed and disclosed inventive concept(s) relates generally to
`
`heart monitoring devices and systems and, more particularly, but not by way of
`
`limitation, to devices, systems and softwarefor identifying when a user should measure
`
`and record an electrocardiogram and generating the electrocardiogram utilizing a
`
`computing device such as a smartphone or smart watch.
`
`2.
`
`BACKGROUND OFTHE INVENTION
`
`[0003]
`
`The prior art
`
`includes numerous systems wherein ECG data can be
`
`monitored by an individual and/or transmitted from the individual to a particular doctor's
`
`office or health service center.
`
`For example, U.S. Pat. No. 8,509,882 discloses a
`
`smartphoneprotective case that is usable as an ECG device. Wearable systems for
`
`monitoring heart rate are also known including systems for detection of heart rate
`
`variability. What is needed is a system that can better alert or notify a user when
`
`measuring and recording an ECG is warranted so that
`
`it
`
`is not necessary to
`
`continuously inspect and record ECG measurements.
`
`11
`
`11
`
`
`
`SUMMARYOF THE INVENTION
`
`[0004]
`
`Embodiments of the presently claimed and disclosed invention are directed to
`
`personal monitoring and notification devices for monitoring a subject to determine when
`
`to record an electrocardiogram (ECG). In one embodiment, the personal monitoring and
`
`notification device is a smart watch having at least one heart rate monitor and at least
`
`one activity monitor. One or more processors are coupled to one or more non-transitory
`
`memories of the smart watch and configured to communicate with the heart rate monitor
`
`and the activity monitor. The one or more processors are further coupled to an output
`
`device. Processor executable code is stored on the one or more memories and when
`
`executed by the one or more processors causes the one or more processors to
`
`determine if heart rate and activity measurements represent an advisory condition for
`
`recording an ECG, and generate and send notification signals through the output device
`
`when an advisory condition for recording an ECGis determined.
`
`[0005]
`
`In another embodiment, a removable wrist band for a smart watch includes an
`
`electrode assembly having a first electrode positioned on an inner surface of the band
`
`and a second electrode positioned on an outer surface of the band. The electrode
`
`assembly is configured to sense heart-related signals upon contact with a user’s skin,
`
`and further configured to convert the sensed heart-related signals to ECG electrical
`
`signals. When worn on a wrist of a first arm, the first electrode contacts the wearer's
`
`skin near that wrist. The second electrode can then be contacted with a part of the
`
`wearers second arm, such as a hand or finger of the second arm to measure the
`
`wearer's ECG electrical signals. A converter assembly is positioned on or in the band
`
`and integrated with, and electrically connected to,
`
`the electrode assembly. The
`
`12
`
`12
`
`
`
`converter assembly is configured to receive the ECG electrical signals generated by the
`
`electrode assembly, and output ECG sound signals through an audio transmitter to a
`
`microphone in a smartphone whenthe back plate is positioned on the smartphone. The
`
`converter assembly is further configured to output the ECG signals as an ultrasonic FM
`
`sound signal.
`
`[0010]
`
`In another embodiment, a removable back plate of a smart phone includes an
`
`electrode assembly positioned on an outer surface of the back plate. The electrode
`
`assembly is configured to sense heart-related signals upon contact with a user’s skin,
`
`and further configured to convert the sensed heart-related signals to ECG electrical
`
`signals. A converter assembly is positioned on an inner surface of the back plate and
`
`integrated with, and electrically connected to, the electrode assembly. The converter
`
`assembly is configured to receive the ECG electrical signals generated by the sensor
`
`and output ECG sound signals through an audio transmitter to a microphone in a
`
`smartphone when the back plate is positioned on the smartphone. The converter
`
`assembly is further configured to output the ECG signals as an ultrasonic FM sound
`
`signal.
`
`[0011]
`
`A method for alerting an individual
`
`to record an electrocardiogram (ECG)
`
`includes the following steps. Heart rate and activity are monitored using a smart watch
`
`having a heart rate monitor, an activity monitor, and nontransitory memory storing
`
`computer executable code that when executed by one or more processors cause the
`
`one or more processors to determine if
`
`the monitored heart
`
`rate and activity
`
`measurements represent an advisory condition for recording an ECG, and to generate
`
`and send notification signals when an advisory condition for recording an ECG is
`
`13
`
`13
`
`
`
`determined. Upon receiving notification signals that an advisory condition for recording
`
`an ECG is determined, an ECG is measured and recorded using a watch band of the
`
`smart watch. The watch band has an electrode assembly configured to sense heart-
`
`related signals upon contact with a user’s skin, and to convert the sensed heart-related
`
`signals to ECG electrical signals. A converter assembly including an audio transmitter,
`
`is integrated with, and electrically connected to the sensor assembly and configured to
`
`receive the ECG electrical signals generated by the sensor and output ECG sound
`
`signals through the audio transmitter to a microphone in a computing device,
`
`for
`
`example a smart phone, wherein the converter assembly is further configured to output
`
`the ECG signals as an ultrasonic FM sound signal.
`
`[0012]
`
`Thus, utilizing (1) the technology knownin the art; (2) the above-referenced
`
`general description of the presently claimed and disclosed inventive concept(s); and
`
`(3) the detailed description of the invention that follows, the advantages and novelties of
`
`the presently claimed and disclosed inventive concept(s) would be readily apparent to
`
`one of ordinary skill in the art.

`
`DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
`
`[0017]
`
`Before explaining at least one embodimentof the invention in detail, it is to be
`
`understood that
`
`the invention is not
`
`limited in its application to the details of
`
`construction, experiments, exemplary data, and/or the arrangement of the components
`
`set forth in the following description. The invention is capable of other embodiments or
`
`of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also, it is to be understood that the
`
`terminology employed herein is for purpose of description and should not be regarded
`
`aslimiting.
`
`[0018]
`
`In the following detailed description of embodiments of the disclosure,
`
`numerous specific details are set
`
`forth in order
`
`to provide a more thorough
`
`understanding of the disclosure. However,it will be apparent to one of ordinary skill in
`
`the art that the concepts within the disclosure can be practiced without these specific
`
`details.
`
`In other instances, well-known features have not been described in detail to
`
`avoid unnecessarily complicating the description.
`
`[0019]
`
`The inventive concept(s) disclosed herein is directed to a personal monitoring
`
`device, methods and systems for measuring physiological signals and transmitting
`
`those measurements wirelessly and soundlessly using frequency modulated ultrasonic
`
`signals having a much improved signal
`
`to noise ratio compared to traditional
`
`transtelephonic methods. Also provided are methods and algorithms to receive and
`
`demodulate the ultrasonic signals with excellent accuracy using existing computer and
`
`smart phone technology.
`
`15
`
`15
`
`
`
`[0020]
`
`Referring now to FIG.
`
`1 and FIG. 2, a replaceable, removable smart phone
`
`back plate 10 includes an electrode assembly 12 positioned on an outer surface 14 of
`
`the removable back plate 10 and configured to sense heart-related signals upon contact
`
`with a user's skin, and to convert the sensed heart-related signals to ECG electrical
`
`signals; and a converter assembly 16 including an audio transmitter 18, positioned on
`
`an inner surface 20 of the removable back plate 10,
`
`the converter assembly 16
`
`integrated with, and electrically connected to the electrode assembly 12 and configured
`
`to receive the ECG electrical signals generated by the electrodes and output ECG
`
`sound signals through the audio transmitter 18 to a microphone in a computing device
`
`within range of the audio transmitter 18, wherein the converter assembly 16 is further
`
`configured to output the ECG signals as an ultrasonic FM soundsignal.
`
`[0021]
`
`In another embodiment, as shown in FIG. 3, a smart watch 22 includesat
`
`least one heart rate monitor 24 and at
`
`least one activity monitor 26. One or more
`
`processors are coupled to one or more non-transitory memories of the smart watch and
`
`configured to communicate with the heart rate monitor 24 and the activity monitor 26.
`
`The one or more processors are further coupled to an output device 28. Processor
`
`executable code is stored on the one or more memories and when executed by the one
`
`or more processors causes the one or more processors to determine if heart rate and
`
`activity measurements represent an advisory condition for recording an ECG, and
`
`generate and send notification signals through the output device 28 when an advisory
`
`condition for recording an ECGis determined.
`
`[0022]
`
`For example, presently available smart watches include motion sensors such
`
`as pedometers. Pedometers can be based on an accelerometer or electromechanical
`
`16
`
`16
`
`
`
`mechanism such as a pendulum, magnetic reed proximity switch, and a spring-
`
`suspended lever arm with metal-on-metal contact. Modern accelerometers are often
`
`small micro electro-mechanical systems and are well knownbythose skilled in the art.
`
`[0023]
`
`Heart rate monitors are readily available with smart phones as well as smart
`
`watches. One type uses an optical sensor to detect the fluctuation of blood flow. The
`
`signal can be amplified further using, for example, a microcontroller to count the rate of
`
`fluctuation, which is actually the heart rate.
`
`[0024]
`
`Referring now to FIG. 4, an advisory condition for recording an ECG may
`
`occur due to large continuing fluctuations in heart rate. An advisory condition for
`
`recording an ECG can also occur when a measured heart rate increases rapidly without
`
`a corresponding increase in activity monitored by, for example, an accelerometer. By
`
`comparing measured heart rate changes with measured activity changes, the presently
`
`disclosed software or “app” minimizes false alarms are minimized.
`
`[0025]
`
`ECG devices are described in U.S. Ser. No 12/796,188, filed June 8, 2010,
`
`now U.S. Patent No. 8,509,882, hereby expressly incorporated herein by referencein its
`
`entirety. The ECG device can be present in a smart watch band or a smart phone.
`
`In
`
`one embodiment, the ECG device 10 includes an electrode assembly 12 configured to
`
`sense heart-related signals upon contact with a user's skin, and to convert the sensed
`
`heart-related signals to an ECG electric signal. The ECG device 10 transmits an
`
`ultrasonic frequency modulated ECG signal
`
`to a computing device such as,
`
`for
`
`example, a smartphone. Software running on the computing device or smartphone
`
`digitizes and processes the audio in real-time, where the frequency modulated ECG
`
`signal is demodulated. The ECG can be further processed using algorithms to calculate
`
`17
`
`17
`
`
`
`heart rate and identify arrhythmias. The ECG, heart rate, and rhythm information can
`
`be displayed on the computer or smartphone, stored locally for later retrieval, and/or
`
`transmitted in realtime to a web server via a 2G/3G/4G, WiFi or other Internet
`
`connection.
`
`In addition to the display and local processing of the ECG data,
`
`the
`
`computer or smartphone can transmit, in real-time, the ECG, heart rate and rhythm data
`
`via a secure web connection for viewing, storage and further analysis via a web browser
`
`interface.
`
`[0026]
`
`In another embodiment,
`
`the converter assembly 14 of an ECG device is
`
`integrated with, and electrically connected to the electrode assembly and is configured
`
`to convert the electric ECG signal generated by electrode assembly to a frequency
`
`modulated ECG ultrasonic signal having a carrier frequency in the range of from about
`
`18 kHz to about 24 kHz.
`
`It is sometimes desirable to utilize a carrier frequency in the 20
`
`kHz to 24 kHz range. The ultrasonic range creates both a lower noise andasilent
`
`communication between the acquisition electronics and the computing device such as
`
`the smartphone, notebook, smart watch and thelike.
`
`[0027]
`
`A kit can include downloadable software such as an “app” for detecting an
`
`advisory condition for recording an ECG and an ECG device. The ECG device can be
`
`present on a watch band for replacing a specific band on a smart watch. The ECG
`
`device can also be provided on a smart phone back plate for replacing an existing
`
`removable smartphone back.
`
`In another configuration, the ECG device is usable as a
`
`smartphone protective case.
`
`[0028]
`
`Software on the smartphone or smart watch can also combine data and
`
`signals from other sensors built into the smartphone or smart watch such as a GPS.
`
`18
`
`18
`
`
`
`[0029]
`
`From the above descriptions,
`
`it
`
`is clear that the presently disclosed and
`
`claimed inventive concept(s) are well-adapted to carry out the objects and to attain the
`
