`The Missing Credits
`
`About the Author
`David Pogue is the weekly computer columnist for the New York
`Times, an Emmy-nominated correspondent for CBS News, and the
`creator of the Missing Manual series. He's the author or co-author of
`35 books, including ten in this series and six in the "For Dummies" line
`(including Magic, Opera, Classical Music, and Macs). In his other life,
`he's a former Broadway show conductor, a magician, and a pianist.
`
`Photos and other goodies await at www.davidpogue.com. David welcomes feedback
`about Missing Manual titles by email: david@pogueman.com. (If you need technical
`help, however, please refer to the sources in Chapter 4.)
`
`About the Creative Team
`John Cacciatore ( copy editor) works out of his home office in Woburn, Massachusetts,
`where he is ardently engaged in the English major's freelance trinity: writing, editing,
`and proofing. A collaborator on the past several Missing Manual volumes, John now
`understands the inner workings of the Mac and Windows more intimately than he
`ever dreamt possible. Email: j_cacciatore@yahoo.com.
`
`Rose Cassano (cover illustration) has worked as an independent designer and il(cid:173)
`lustrator for 20 years. Assignments have spanned everything from the nonprofit
`sector to corporate clientele. She lives in beautiful Southern Oregon, grateful for the
`miracles of modern technology that make living and working there a reality. Email:
`cassano@highstream.net. Web: www.rosecassano.com.
`
`David A. Karp ( technical editor, this edition) is the author of nine power-user books,
`including the bestselling Windows XP Annoyances for Geeks ( Second Edition) and eBay
`Hacks: 100 Industrial-Strength Tips & Tools. You can sometimes find his articles in
`PC Magazine and ZTrack Magazine, or on Annoyances.org. When he's not inserting
`arcane pop culture references into his writing, he spends his time as a cyclist, activist,
`pessimist, optimist, photographer, and moviegoer.
`
`Phil Simpson (book design and layout) has been involved with computer graphics
`since 1977, when he worked with one of the first graphics-generating computers-an
`offspring of flight-simulation technology. He now works out of his office in Stamford,
`CT, where he has had his graphic design business since 1982. He is experienced in
`many facets of graphic design, including corporate identity, publication design, and
`corporate and medical communications. Email: pmsimpson@earthlink.net.

`

`L.J. Zacker (technical editor, first edition) began working with mainframe and per(cid:173)
`sonal computers in the mid 1980s, and has since worked as a network administrator,
`programmer, and security consultant for mainframe systems and PC LANs. Now a
`full-time author and editor, L.J. has contributed to numerous books and articles for
`various publishers including Microsoft Press, SAMS Publishing, and Windows 2000
`magazine.
`
`Acknowledgments
`The Missing Manual series is a joint venture between Pogue Press (the dream team
`introduced on these pages) and O'Reilly & Associates (a dream publishing partner).
`In particular, this book owes its existence to Tim O'Reilly, Cathy Record, Edie Freed(cid:173)
`man, Allen Noren, Laura Schmier, Sue Willing, Mark Brokering, Dana Furby, and
`Sara Winge.
`
`I'm deeply appreciative to have enjoyed the talents of proofreaders Danny Marcus,
`Sada Preisch, Jim Elferdink, and Norma Emory, as well as the deadline-saving, elev(cid:173)
`enth-hour editorial assistance of Nan Barber, the Missing Manual series copy editor.
`Thanks, too, to my agent, David Rogelberg, to Astrid Vanatalu, and to Darin Linnman,
`Microsoft's PR liaison at Waggener-Edstrom, who cheerfully chased down answers
`to some sticky questions. Finally, thanks to Jennifer, Kelly, Tia, and Jeffrey, who make
`these books- and everything else-possible.
`
`The Missing Manual Series
`Missing Manual books are designed to be superbly written guides to computer prod(cid:173)
`ucts that don't come with printed manuals (which is just about all of them). Each
`book features Rep Kover, a binding that lets the book lie flat without the assistance of
`cinder blocks; cross-references to specific page numbers (not just "See Chapter 14");
`and a promise never to use an apostrophe in the possessive word its. Current and
`upcoming titles include:
