`
`ABSTRACT
`(37)
`A method and apparatus are providedfor recciving a cleaning
`liquid having a pH in a range between pH6-pH8 and an
`oxidation reduction potential (ORP) between +50 mV. The
`liquid is converted into an anolyte liquid and a catholyte
`liquid having respective pHs outside of the range between
`pH6-pH8 and having respective ORPs outside the range
`between +50 mV. Lhe anolyte and catholyte liquids are
`applied to a surface, wherein the anolyte and catholyte liquids
`are, for example, in a combined state on the surface and
`substantially neutralize to a pII between pI16-pl]8 and an
`ORP between +50 mVwithin one minute ofthe time at which
`the anolyte and catholyte liquids are converted.

`
`FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE
`
`The present disclosurerelates to cleaning and/or sanitizing
`systems, and more particularly but notlimited to systemsthat
`generate a working liquid having cleaning and/or sanitizing
`properties.
`BACKGROUND OFTHE DISCLOSURE
`
`A wide variety of systems are in use today for cleaning or
`disinfecting residential,
`industrial, commercial, hospital,
`food processing, andrestaurant facilities, such as surfaces and
`other substrates, and for cleaning or disinfecting various
`items, such as food products or other articles.
`Tor example, hard floor surface scrubbing machines are
`widely used to clean the Moors of indusirial and commercial
`
`2
`buildings. They range in size from a smali model, which is
`controlled by an operator walking, behindit, to a large model,
`which is controlled by an operator riding on the machine.
`Such machines in gencral are wheeled vehicles with suitable
`operator controls. Their bodies contain power and drive ele-
`ments, a solution tankto hold acleaning liquid, anda recovery
`tank to hold soiled solution recovered from the floor being
`scrubbed. A scrub head, which centains one or more scrub-
`bing brushes andassociated drive elementsare attached to the
`vehicle and may be locatedin front of, under or behindil. A
`solution distribution system dispenses cleaning liquid from
`the solution tank to the Moor im the vicinity of the scrubbing
`brushor brushes.
`Soft floor cleaning, machines can be implemented as small
`mobile machines that are handled by an operator or can be
`implemented in a truck-mounted system having a cleaning
`wand connected to the truck. The truck carries a cleaning
`liquid solution tank, a wastewater recovery tank and a pow-
`erful vacuum extractor.
`Typical cleaning liquids used in hard and soft floor clean-
`ing systems include water and a chemically based detergent.
`The detergent typically includes a solvent, a builder, and a
`surfactant. While these detergents increase cleaning effec-
`tiveness for a variety of different soil types, such as dirt and
`oils, these detergents also have a tendency to leave unwanted
`residue on the cleaned surface. Such residue can adversely
`affect the appearance ofthe surface and the tendencyofthe
`surface to re-soil and, depending on the detergent, can poten-
`tially cause adverse health or environment effects. Similar
`disadvantages apply to cleaning systems for other types of
`surfaces and items.
`Improved cleaning systemsare desiredfor reducing the use
`oftypical detergents and/or reducing the residue left on the
`surface after cleaning while maintaining desired cleaning
`and/or disinfecting propertics.
`SUMMARY
`
`An embodimentof the disclosure is directed to a method,
`whichincludes: a) receiving a liquid having a pH in a range
`between pll6-pl18 and an oxidation reduction potential
`(ORP) between +50 mV; b) converting the liquid into an
`anolyte liquid and a catholyte liquid, which have respective
`pHsoutside of the range between pH6-pH8 andhave respec-
`tive ORPs outside the range between +50 mV;c) applying the
`anolyte and catholyte liquids to a surface for a residence time;
`and d) recovering at
`least a portion of the anolyte and
`catholyte liquids fromthe surface after the residence time and
`placing the anolyte and catholyte liquids in a common recov-
`ery tank, wherein the anolyte and catholyte liquids substan-
`tially neutralize to a pH between pH6-pH8 and an ORP
`between +50 mVwithin one minute of the time at which the
`anolyte and catholyte liquids are convertedin step b).
`Another embodiment
`is directed to a method, which
`includes: a) reeciving a liquid having a pH ina range between
`pH6-pH8 and an oxidation reduction potential
`(ORP)
`between +50 mV: b) converting the liquid into an anolyte
`liquid and a catholyte liquid having respective pHs outside of
`the range between pH6-pH8 and having respective ORPs
`outside the range between +50 mV; and ¢) applying the
`anolyte andcatholyte liquids to a surlace, wherein the anolyte
`and catholyte liquids are in a blended state on the surface and
`substantially neutralize to a pH between pH6-pH& and an
`ORP between 250 mVwithin one minuteofthe time at which
`the anolyte and catholyte liquids are convertedin step b).
`Another embodimentis directed to an apparatus. The appa-
`ratus includes: a source [or receiving a liquid having a pH in
