`Vehicle bodies (passenger cars)
`
`Body structure
`
`Unitized all-steel body
`_
`(Standard design)
`A self—supporting body comprises hollow
`sheet-steel components onto which body
`panels are welded by welding robots or In
`multi-spot welding units. Depending upon
`vehicle type,
`roughly 5000 spot welds
`must be made along a flange length
`of 120.200 m. The flange widths are
`10...18 mm. Other parts (front fenders,
`doors, hood and luggage-compartment
`lid) are bolted to the supporting structure
`of the body. Other types of body construc-
`tion include frame and sandwich desrgns.
`General requirements:
`
`Rigidity
`Torsional and bending rigidity should be
`as great as possible in order to minimize
`elastic deformation of the apertures for
`the doors, hood and luggage-compart-
`ment lid. The effect of body rigidity on the
`vibrational characteristics of the vehicle
`must be taken into consideration.
`
`Vibrational characteristics
`
`Body vibrations as well as vibrations of
`individual structural components as a
`result of excitation by the wheels, sus-
`pension system, engine and drivetrain
`

`
`can severely impair driving C

`
`Body stresses due to accidents
`In the event of a collision, the body must
`be capable of transforming as much kine.
`tic energy as possible into deformation
`work while minimising deformation of the
`vehicle interior.
`
`Ease of re air
`
`Those components which are most sus-
`ceptible to damage as a result of minor
`accidents
`(‘fender-benders”) must be
`easily replaceable or repairable (access
`to exterior body panels from inside.

`joints, feature lines for the repainting of
`individual components).
