`to the mobile videophone device, and the other end is connected
`to the personal computer or to a USB hub connected to the
`personal computer by a USB format. Here, when connecting to a
`USB hub, the number of USB hubs increases according to the
`number of external peripherals connected to the personal
`computer.
`[0006] On the other hand, when connecting the mobile
`videophone device to a device, the mobile videophone device
`being the host end, it similarly becomes necessary to increase the
`number of USB hubs according to the number of peripherals
`used.
`[0007] Additionally, in general, mobile phones are required to be
`miniaturized for portability, and due to the problem of having
`little space, only one interface can be applied. Therefore, only one
`external device can be connected to the mobile videophone
`device, and thus when connecting to devices such as a keyboard,
`mouse, or the like from a state connected to a personal computer
`or the like (there are opposite cases), there is one interface, and
`thus these must be removed and reconnected.
`[0008] Additionally, when the mobile videophone device is
`connected to another host personal computer as a device, it can
`be used continuously for a long time depending on the host
`personal computer, but when using the mobile videophone device
`as the host end, it is operating using an internal battery, and thus
`it is used for a shorter time and more intermittently compared to
`other host personal computers. Therefore, there is a problem in
`that it is not desirable to operate the mobile videophone device as
`the host end from the viewpoint of the battery.
`[0009] Furthermore, when calling or receiving a call using the
`mobile videophone device, cables connected to personal
`computers or external peripherals of become a nuisance and are
`removed. However, connectors on cable tips are installed so as
`not to be easily removable, and thus it is inconvenient to remove
`them each time.
`[0010]

`[Detailed Description of Invention]
`[0001]
`[Technical Field of Invention] The present invention relates to a
`charger capable of charging a mobile phone and coupling to an
`external device and more specifically relates to a USB format
`charger provided with a HUB function capable of connecting a
`plurality of external devices.
`[0002]
`[Conventional Art] In recent years, mobile phones can not only
`make calls via wireless lines, but also transmit and store various
`types of information due to the large amount of information that
`accompanies high transmission speeds. In particular, a mobile
`videophone device has a camera and monitor to input and output
`video and a microphone and a speaker to input and output audio
`and uses wireless lines to, on a transmission end, respectively
`encode image information captured by the camera and audio
`information inputted via the microphone and transmits them to
`the communication partner and, on a reception end, receive and
`decode image information and audio information transmitted
`from a communication partner and outputs the image and audio
`from the monitor and speaker, thereby enabling conversation
`while viewing video from the communication partner end.
`[0003] This mobile videophone device can take in an image using
`the camera and converts it to data and receive image data from a
`partner terminal, and thus it is possible to store image data in
`internal memory and link to phone directory data for use.
`Thereby, it is possible to search for a phone number while
`viewing an image, make a call to an image partner displayed on
`the screen, and display an image display along with a name when
`receiving a call. Additionally, it is also possible to exchange
`stored image data between partner terminals.
`[0004] Furthermore, a USB format, which is easy to use, is often
`used for the interfaces of current personal computers and the like,
`and using the USB format for the interface of the mobile
`videophone device and having a USB port enables easy use of
`personal computers or the like to read/write image data, audio
`data, phone directory data, and other internal program data stored
`in memory on the mobile videophone device. Moreover, when
`the mobile videophone device operates as a personal computer, it
`is possible to easily access hard disk data by simply connecting
`to an external peripheral (device) such as a hard disk.
`[0005]
`[Problem to Be Solved by Invention] When actually connecting
`the mobile videophone device to a host end such as a personal
`computer by a USB format, one end of a USB cable is connected

`has a large capacity hard disk, and thus the capacity allocated to
`image data of one image can be increased, and high quality
`images can be stored. The power supply of the mobile
`videophone device 100 is supplied from the USB controller 14 to
`the battery 15 by coupling to a charger via a USB format capable
`of supplying data and power.
`[0014] Each component of the charger 110 operates as follows.
`The first USB port 20 is connected to another host personal
`computer, the second USB port 21 is connected to the USB port
`13 of the mobile videophone device 100, and the third USB port
`24 is connected to external peripherals such as a mouse and a
`keyboard. The USB hub control unit 27 manages the connection
`of the first USB port 20, the second USB port 21, and the third
`USB port 24. The connection switching unit 26 switches the
`connection between the first USB port 20 and the second USB
`port 21 connected to the USB hub control unit 27. A power supply
`voltage supplied from a power supply source is supplied from the
`charging control unit 23 to the USB hub control unit 27 and the
`second USB port 21.
`[0015] Normally, when connecting another host personal
`computer, the other host personal computer is connected to the
`first USB port 20 via a USB cable, the connection switching unit
`26 connects the connection destination of the first USB port 20 to
`the USB hub control unit 27, the connection destination being the
`host end, and the mobile videophone device 100 connected to the
`second USB port 21 is connected to the USB hub control unit 27
`as a device. On the other hand, when the mobile videophone
`device 100 is used as the host personal computer, the connection
`switching unit 26 connects the second USB port 21 to the USB
`hub control unit 27 as the host end, and the first USB port 20 is
`not connected to the USB hub control unit 27 and is in
`disconnected state. That is, in the USB hub control 27, one first
`USB port to be connected to the external device becomes vacant.
`Also external peripherals (devices) connected to the third USB
`port 24 are connected as peripherals of the mobile videophone
`device 100. Note, when the connection is switched or when the
`mobile videophone device 100 is connected to the charger 110,
`the connection state due to the connection switching switch is sent
`to the mobile videophone device 100, and operation settings in
`the USB connection are changed and correspondingly operated
`by the CPU 14 inside the mobile videophone device 100.
`[0016] FIG. 2 is one embodiment of the charger of the present
`invention and a diagram illustrating coupling of a mobile phone
`and a charger. FIG. 2(a) is a front view of the charger of the
`present embodiment, and FIG. 2(b) is a back view of the charger

`USB port for transmitting and receiving data to and from an
`external device and supplying power, 14 illustrates a USB
`controller for controlling the USB port 13, and 15 illustrates a
`battery. For the components of the charger 110, 20 illustrates a
`first USB port for coupling a host-controllable external device
`such as a personal computer, 21 illustrates a second USB port for
`coupling the mobile videophone device 100, 22 illustrates a
`power supply connection unit such as an outlet, 23 illustrates a

`USB port and the second USB port in conjunction with the
`connection switching switch 25, and 27 illustrates a USB hub
`control unit having functions for branching and transmitting
`signals, attaching and removing external devices, determining
`low speed devices and high speed devices, and supplying and
`managing power.
`[0013] In FIG. 1, each component of the mobile videophone
`device 100 operates as follows. Data captured by the imaging unit
`1 is encoded in the encoding unit 2 and stored in the transmission
`buffer 3 as encoded data. The encoded data stored in the
`transmission buffer 3 is transmitted to the wireless unit 5 via the
`data bus 4 and transmitted to a communication partner end via the
`antenna 6. Also, the coded data received from the communication
`partner end by the wireless unit 5 passes through the data bus 4
`and is stored in the reception buffer 7. The coded data stored in
`the reception buffer 7 is decoded into image data by the decoding
`unit 8 and displayed on the display unit 9. According to user
`requests, the CPU 12 stores an image captured by the imaging
`unit 1 and an image received from the communication partner end
`in a coded form on the hard disk 11 via the hard disk controller
`10. Furthermore, the mobile videophone device 100 couples the
`USB port 13 to the second USB port 21 of the USB-compatible
`charger 110 to enable read/write access to the coded data stored
`in the hard disk 11 or the like from the external device via the
`USB controller 14. Moreover, the mobile videophone device 100

`The power supply cable 22 is connected to an outlet or the like
`connected to a commercial power supply, and the supplied power
`supply voltage is supplied to the mobile videophone device 100
`via the USB port 21 to charge an internal battery and supply
`power supply voltage from the USB port 24 to an external
`peripheral. The charger 110 thus performs, as one device, a
`charging operation of the mobile videophone device 100 and an
`operation as a USB hub to which the first USB port 20 and the
`second USB port 24 are connected, and thus the number of
`connection ports of the power supply source is reduced, and space
`is saved. Also, according to FIG. 2, the mobile videophone device
`100 can be easily connected to the charger and a USB-
`connectable external device by simply placing the mobile
`videophone device 100 on the charger 110, and when the mobile
`videophone device 100 receives an incoming call, the mobile
`videophone device 100 can be easily removed from the charger
`110 to respond to the incoming call.
`[0017] FIG. 3 is one embodiment of the charger of the present
`invention and a diagram illustrating a connection example of
`being connected to an external device. In FIG. 3, the mobile
`videophone device 100 is connected to a personal computer
`console 120, a monitor 130, and a keyboard 140 via the USB hub
`control unit 27 in the charger 110 in a state of being connected to
`the charger 110. Thus, the hard disk inside the mobile videophone
`device 100 is accessed by the operation of the keyboard 140 while
`viewing the display 130 from the personal computer console 120,
`images, audio data, phone directory data, program data, and the
`like are read/written, and external data communication on a
`wireless public network can be performed using a radio data
`communication program of the mobile videophone device 120.
`At such time, the connection destination can be switched from the
`charger 110, and the operation setting of the mobile videophone
`device 100 can be performed by only the connection switching
`switch 25.
`[0018] FIG. 4 is one embodiment of the charger of the present
`invention and a diagram illustrating a connection example of
`connecting only a device. In FIG. 4, the mobile videophone
`device 100 is set to operate as a device for host controlling a
`connected device. Also, the monitor and the keyboard 140 are
`connected as external peripherals of the mobile videophone
`device 100 via the USB hub control unit 27 in the charger 110.
`Thus, the operation input of the mobile videophone device 100
`can be inputted using the keyboard 140 connected as an external
`peripheral without using the keyboard of the mobile videophone
`device 100 itself.
`[0019] Thus, the mobile videophone device 100 on the host end
`can be continuously used for a long time. The connection
`destination can be switched from these chargers 110, and the
`operation setting of the mobile videophone device 100 can be
`performed by only the connection switching switch 25.
`[0020] Also, reference numeral 29 in the figures illustrates a lock
`release switch for releasing a lock mechanism (not illustrated) for
`affixing the mobile videophone device 100 and the charger 110.
`[0021]
`[Effect of Invention] Above, according to the present invention,
`the charger is provided with a USB format interface and central
`control means (USB hub control unit), whereby a plurality of
`
`JP 2000-165513 A
`
`6
`external devices can be connected, and respective signals can be
`transmitted and branched. Additionally, the portable phone
`connected to the charger can easily access the external devices
`and can be easily attached and detached. Furthermore, each
`interface being configured in a USB format enables the
`transmission of signals by one port together with supply of power,
`and the charger being provided with the central control means
`(USB hub control unit) for controlling the transmission and
`branching of signals of the portable phone and the external device
`enables a plurality of external devices to be connected and
`enables switching of which is the host between the normal host
`personal computer and the mobile videophone device, and thus it
`is not necessary to reconnect ports.
`[0022] Moreover, the mobile phone always accesses the external
`device while receiving the supply of power from the charger, and
`thus the mobile phone can be used without worrying about battery
`consumption due to long-term and continuous use.
