`USC, and has trained professional engineers worldwide. Dr. Sklar has published and presented scores of technical papers, and is recipient of the
`1984 Prize Paper Award from the IEEE Communications Society for his tutorial series on digital communications. He is a past chairman of the Los
`Angeles Council IEEE Education Committee.

`Frederic J. Harris is professor of electrical engineering and CUBIC signal processing chair at San Diego State University (SDSU) and an
`internationally renowned expert on DSP and communication systems. The co-inventor of the Blackman-Harris Filter, his many technical papers
`include the seminal work "On the use of Windows for Harmonic Analysis with the Discrete Fourier Transform." The author of Multi-rate Signal
`Processing for Communication Systems, he received his B.S. from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, M.S. from SDSU, and PhD from Aalborg
`University, and did PhD course work at University of California, San Diego. An IEEE Fellow, he was co-editor-in-chief of Digital Signal Processing.
`In early 2010 the "Fred Harris Endowed Chair in Digital Signal Processing" fund was established by Eric Johnson and Qualcomm executive Peggy
`Johnson to help future students pursue careers in the communications specialty of electrical engineering, and to honor Harris's legacy.

`I'm taking this for a graduate course, so I can't say it's entirely shocking that it's math heavy.
`In fact, I rather hoped for it. Sklar is straightforward, methodical, and thorough, so if you're
`on the same page, you'll learn a lot. The only weakness I can really say (if you would call it
`that) is the tendency to gloss over certain steps and just jump to the conclusion, and if you
`didn't understand that he also did B, you can't figure out why he started at A and is now at
`C. That said, I've already found uses for it in software applications, and can see it as an
`excellent reference.

`concepts that may be fuzzy from old age and less than judicious amounts of alcohol in

`This textbook is the best one for digital communication for both Engineering students and
`professionals. I think it provides very solid fundamentals of digital communication and
`everyone should have it. I bought this textbook for self studying before getting my Bachelor
`degree. when I wen to graduate school, I made great use of it and actually it was not the
`required textbook for the class. I am glad that I got this textbook early while still being in
`school. what makes this textbook unique is that it easy to follow it and the material are
`explained really well and in an easy way. I highly recommend this book and it must sit on the
`shelf as reference.

`I was introduced to the 1st edition of this book as an undergrad at UCLA where Sklar taught.
`Since then as I have worked in the wireless and telecom fields, it has remained one of my
`main references. I've added other comm. books such as Proakis', but Sklar remains my
`favorite. It is well arrange, making it easy to reference any material you may be interested in.
`It touches on every area of comm. theory from modulation to coding. If you are looking for a
`general communication theory reference book, then this should be the one. But if you are
`only interested in learning in detail about one particular area of commmuncation theory
`such as CDMA or Trellis Coding, then you should seek a book specializing in that area only.
`No book can cover everything in the depth.

`My motivation for purchasing this text was for a graduate level course on Communications
`in Electrical Engineering. The text was somewhat useful with clear illustrations and formulas
`but lacked the clarity desired to grasp a full understanding of the material from simply
`reading the book. As such, the text was primarily used as a reference source when lecture
`material failed to provided enough depth or coverage of a particular subject area. I would
`recommend purchasing this book if required but I would look for another text if you are
`simply trying to get a better understanding of the subject.

`The only downside is the included DVD. Systemview is a nice and capable software but sadly
`it only runs on the old XP machines. Elanix is now gone and I do not expect a new release,
`ever. One can use Simulink instead (at considerable cost) or install a virtual XP.
