`

`
`
`
`The present invention relates to an apparatus and method to effectively control the power supply required to drive
`electronic products.
`
`Currently, the necessity for power saving is emphasized for the sake of energy conservation. In addition, energy savings
`benefit has a big effect on consumers when they select merchandise. Particularly, in case of mobile products that rely on
`cells or batteries, extending the hours of cell or battery use serves as a very important factor for consumers to make
`selections.
`
`Conventionally, to supply power to a product, a power supply switch was manipulated; or a method is employed in
`which a program embedded in the product is manipulated, while power is being supplied to the product, to turn off
`power, and, when a certain period of time elapses, the power is supplied again to the product. The power supply switch,
`however, is supposed to be constructed to protrude toward the outside of the product, so there was a problem when used
`in places that generate lot of dusts or when waterproofing is required.
`
`To minimize power supply while power is supplied to a product, a method has been used to convert to the power save
`mode without any manipulation when a certain amount of time has elapsed; or a method has been used to automatically
`cut off power supply without any manipulation when a certain amount of time has elapsed. In addition to said methods,
`in case of mobile products that use cells or batteries, a method has been used in which the users were reminded, when the
`remaining power falls below a certain level, by a warning message that informs, by voice or on the screen, that power is
`not sufficient; or a warning message to turn off the power immediately. However, in case of said method of converting to
`the power save mode or the method of automatically cutting off power after a certain amount of time elapses, there was a
`problem that, as unique time value is set in the product, the user is unable to freely set the time, at will, to convert it to
`the power save mode or set the time to have power turned off, making it impossible to use it in line with user’s
`environment, which led to unnecessary power consumption.
`
`TECHNICAL PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED BY THE INVENTION
`
`The present invention was researched and developed to solve the problem stated above. By enabling to select whether to
`supply power by the power on/off switch or by the touch sensor, it supplies power to fit the user’s work environment
`such as the environment that generates a lot of dusts or the environment requiring waterproofing.
`
`In addition, the present invention enables the user to select the mode of the product and at the same time enables the user
`to set the time to enter the power save mode and/or the off mode, thus minimizing the power consumption. In particular,
`in case of mobile products that use cells, batteries, etc., it is the object of the present invention to extend the hours of cell
`or battery use.
`
`CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF THE INVENTION
`
`Since the construction and characteristics of the present invention can be described in detail by the embodiments,
`preferred embodiments will be explained in detail hereunder with the accompanying drawings. There may be multiple
`embodiments of the present invention and they are not limited to what is described hereunder.
`
`FIG. 1 is a rough block diagram of a power control device according to one embodiment of the present invention.
`
`Said device in FIG. 1 comprises a power on/off switch 10, a touch sensor 20, a direct current power output unit 30, a
`power supply mode selection unit 40, a microprocessor 50, and device units 60.
`
`Being the same type as the one used in general electronics products, said power on/off switch 10 supplies power to
`products or cuts off power.
`
`Said touch sensor 20 detects whether there was contact from the user using the changes in capacitance according to the
`changes in dielectric constant; and generates switching signals according to said detection result. In other words, said
`touch sensor 20 has a function of generating predetermined operation commands according to the manipulation done by
`the user.
`
`Said power supply output unit 30 converts the alternate current power supplied from outside to a certain level direct
`current voltage and outputs it or outputs the battery voltage.
`
`Said power supply selection unit 40 enables the user to select whether to start the power supply by means of the on/off
`switch 10 or the touch sensor 20. It may be separately installed outside the product or it may be implemented by
`installing a program in the product. Or a specific button on the keypad may be arranged to play a role of a function
`button to select the power supply mode.
`
`Said microprocessor 50 has a program to process various calculations and a program to minimize the power supply in use
`and promote convenience of use embedded therein. In other words, it enables to select the state in which power is
`continuously supplied to the product in use (“General Mode”); or the state in which power is saved when a certain
`amount of time elapses without any manipulation (“Power Save Mode”); or the state in which power is cut off (“Off
`Mode”) after a certain amount of time elapses without any manipulation to make it fit in with the work environment of
`the user.
`
`Said device units 60 are various devices added to implement the characteristics of various products.

`Said device in FIG. 1 may be modified in various types for use. For example, when applied to products used in an
`environment that generates a lot of dust or in an environment requiring waterproofing, it may be configured to supply
`power supply by using only a touch sensor while removing the power on/off switch 10 as well as the power supply mode
`selection unit 40. In addition, said touch sensor 20 can promote convenience of use by varying the position depending on
`the product type. In other words, the inconvenience of operating the on/off switch when starting supplying power to the
`product can be reduced by configuring in such a way that a touch sensor 20 is positioned on the area that frequently
`comes into contact while the product is being used.
`
`FIG. 2 is a flow diagram of power control according to one embodiment of the present invention.
`
`Referring to FIG. 2, an embodiment of the present invention will be explained in detail hereunder.
`
`Through the power supply mode selection unit 40, whether the power will be supplied by means of the on/off switch 10
`or the touch sensor 20 is selected S100; and power is supplied to the product according to the selection. Here, as
`described above, when applied to the products used in an environment that generates a lot of dust or in an environment
`requiring waterproofing, power may be supplied only by the touch sensor 20, removing the on/off switch 10 as well as
`the power supply mode selection unit 40.
`
`When power is supplied to the product, an environment in which the user will use the product will be decided S200. In
`other words, power is supplied, and a message is displayed to allow the user to select the mode of use. The user may
`select one out of the General Mode, Power Save Mode, and Off Mode, or select to have the functions of both Power Save
`Mode and Off Mode performed. If the user does not select the mode of use, the mode already set is applied. As described
`above, General Mode indicates a state in which power is supplied continuously, and Power Save Mode indicates a state
`that saves power when a certain length of time elapses without any manipulation, and Off Mode indicates a state in
`which power is cut off when a certain length of time elapses without any manipulation. Although FIG. 2 does not
`illustrate performing both Power Save Mode and Off Mode, the operation will be described later.
`
`If the user selects General Mode, the state will continue in which power is normally supplied to the product until
`executing the on/off switch or the ending function embedded in the program.
`
`If the user selects Power Save Mode, a screen is displayed to allow the user to set the time to enter Power Save Mode,
`that is, how long a time should elapse without any manipulation before entering the Power Save Mode. The user will set
`the time to enter a mode according to what is displayed S300. Here, if the user does not set the time to enter a mode, the
`value already set will apply. As the next stage, the microprocessor 50 continuously detects whether the user has
`performed manipulation S400. If the user has performed manipulation, the command will be executed as manipulated by
`the user. If the user has not performed manipulation, the previously manipulated time and the current time are compared
`to determine whether the set time has elapsed S500. If the set time has elapsed, it enters the Power Save Mode. If the set
`time has not elapsed, it returns to the stage of checking whether the user has performed manipulation or not.
`
`If the user selects the Off Mode, a screen is displayed for the user to set the time to enter the Power Save Mode, that is,
`how long a time should elapse without any manipulation before power is turned off. The user will set the time to enter
`according to what is displayed S600. Here, if the user does not set the time to enter a mode, the value already set will
`apply. As the next stage, the microprocessor 50 continuously detects whether the user has performed manipulation S700.
`If the user has performed manipulation, the command will be executed as manipulated. If the user has not performed
`manipulation, the previously manipulated time and the current time are compared to determine whether the set time has
`elapsed S800. If the set time has elapsed, power is cut off. If the set time has not elapsed, it returns to the stage of
`checking whether the user has performed manipulation or not.
`
`In addition, when selecting the mode of use, the present invention can control power effectively by selecting both Power
`Save Mode and Off Mode. For example, in case the time to enter Power Save Mode is set at 5 minutes and the time to
`enter Off Mode is set at 10 minutes, when 5 minutes pass from the point of manipulation by the user, it enters the Power
`Save Mode and the power saving state remains. When 10 minutes pass from the point of manipulation, it enters the Off
`Mode and power supply to the product is cut off.
`
`EFFECT OF THE INVENTION
`
`As described above, the present invention enables the user to select whether to start power supply by means of the on/off
`switch or by the touch sensor, thereby appropriately supply power to make it fit in with the work environment of the user.
`In particular, in the work environment that generates a lot of dust or in the work environment that requires waterproofing,
`the present invention starts power supply only by the touch sensor and seals the outside of the product for protection
`from infiltration by dust or humidity, thereby increasing product durability.
`
`In addition, the present invention enables the user to select the mode of use from General Mode, Power Save Mode, Off
`Mode or select both Power Save Mode and Off Mode, thereby minimizing unnecessary power supply consumed while
`the product is in use. Particularly, mobile products that use cells, batteries, etc. can extend the hours of battery use with
`the present invention.
