`
`Bill Weber was the best boss that anyone could wish for. He treated with
`me with respect, allowed me to take risks, kept my ego in check when things
`went well, and supported me without hesitation when things went bad. It is
`no surprise that Bill became a goodfriend and mentor. In some of the most
`important moments of my life—when 1 got married and- when Ifirst started
`writing these books—Bill provided encouragement that carried me through
`anxiety and doubt.
`
`All of us who called Bill a friend feel he passed away too soon. Few days go
`by when I don ’t remember something that he said. Nothing pleases me more
`than to share my memories ofBill with you, and this book that you are about
`to read and which Bill helped me write.

`Acknowledgments
`
`Although the title does not indicate it, this is now the fourth edition of my book on handheld
`computers that run Microsoft software. Over the years since the first edition of this book became
`available, I have received many kind e-mails from readers complimenting my work. This book
`that you are holding would not exist if not for those who bought the previous editions. So first, and
`foremost, I want to thank all of you for buying this book.
`It has been a pleasure to work again with the entire crew at McGraw-Hill. While my name is
`on the cover, many more have worked behind the scenes to produce this book. Special thanks to
`Megg Morin, Janet Walden, and Agatha Kim.
`Writing this book was a collaborative effort with my technical editor, Todd Ogasawara. Todd’s
`many suggestions in each chapter have made this book better, and you and I have benefited from
`his work. Thank you, Todd.
`
`Thanks also go to John Starkweather and Andrew Brown at Microsoft for providing information
`and answering questions about the Windows Mobile.
`
`For securing the images seen on this book’s cover, thanks go out to Amy Thompson at Dell,
`Melinda Neely at HTC America, and Lyndsay LaGree at Motorola. Thanks to Michael Boone at
`Biomobility, LLC. for providing permission to include screen shots of their products in this book.
`Their quick turnaround and efforts are much appreciated.
`Thanks to my friends, mentors, and co—workers including: Ray Anderson, Scott Van Wolvelaere,
`Amy Dulan, Bob Naglich, Brad Gee, Shirley Myrick, Saven'o Rinaldi, Keith Muir, Dawn Pfaff, and
`Rhonda Belinc. I appreciate your friendship and support.
`Thanks to my niece, Carley Lindquist, for helping with the screen shots in this book. Thanks
`to my grandmother, Dorothy McPherson, and my mother, Sharon McPherson, for their love and
`support. And last but not least, thanks to my wife Ruth. Your love, patience, understanding, and
`support are what made this book happen.

`
`Introduction
`
`What’s in a name? Over the years since it first released software for handheld devices, Microsoft
`has changed the software name three times. First it was Windows CE, then Windows Powered, and
`now Windows Mobile Software.
`
`Regardless of the names, the software remains true to its Windows heritage, enabling us to
`use handheld computers in much the same way that we use desktop computers. Critics claim that
`the Windows user interface was never designed for, and therefore not appropriate for, handheld
`computers. What the critics overlook is the power of familiarity that enables one to pick up a Pocket
`PC and Smartphone and use it right away.
`Windows Mobile devices help you interact in different ways with a variety of information.
`Think about all of the information that is important to you. It might be appointments, addresses,
`bank account balances, or documents. It might even be voice recordings, web pages, video clips,
`or music.

`
`
`
`Many people have turned to personal computers to help them keep track of all this different
`information. But, there is a problem with personal computers. Most sit on tables and desks at
`home, yet we might need the information they contain when we are sitting in a meeting or out
`shopping. With a Windows Mobile device, that information can be taken out of the computer
`so it’s with you at any time and anywhere. And when you return home, that information can be
`easily updated to your personal computer.
`Pocket PCs, Pocket PC Phones, and Smartphones are part of a series of hardware devices
`that run the Microsoft Windows CE .NET operating system and application software. Also in the
`series are the Handheld PC. Auto PC, and embedded devices. Microsoft calls the series Windows
`Mobile devices. The combination of Windows CE .NET and application software is known as
`
`Windows Mobile Software for Pocket PCs, Pocket PC Phones, and Smartphones.
`These are incredibly powerful little devices that you can use for work and play. In How to D0
`
`Everything with Windows Mobiie, I show you how to use the latest Windows Mobile Software
`recreate donuments and spreadsheets, check off those items on your task list, and then
