`
`
`Introduction
`
`
`Express Lane is a Video on Demand (VOD) product that gives television networks, advertisers,
`cable MSO‟s and other content service providers the ability to quickly ingest VOD content into the
`Comcast Media Center (CMC) VOD workflow. The functionality provided by Express Lane includes
`the ability to create metadata and upload the associated media for servicing by the CMC for
`transcoding, quality control and submission for delivery to a customizable delivery
`footprint. Express Lane is automated to minimize the need for human intervention and thus is
`available for user access 24/7.
`
`This User Guide is intended to assist the user in understanding the basic functionality of Express
`Lane from logging into the application, entering metadata and what to expect after successfully
`uploading and distributing both metadata and media content.
`
`To use Express Lane, you need to have established a relationship with the CMC for the distribution
`of VOD content. There are a few steps needed before to the first assets flow though the
`ExpressLane system:
` Testing content to confirm it meets the minimum encode specifications set for Express
`Lane (Appendix C). If you are providing Cable Labs 1.1 Metadata compliant files,
`validation is performed at this time also (Appendix A)
` Coordinating metadata values with MSOs and Content Provider (if this is not a new launch
`this step is skipped)
` Collecting individual user information for creation of credentials:
`o First Name
`o Last Name
`o Address
`o Phone number
`o Email address
`o Company Name
`o Title
`o
`IP of the user‟s computer which will be used for Express Lane access
` Creating the Portal, including credentials and instructions emailed to new users. After the
`service has been established, you will receive an email containing a link to the Express
`Lane application.
`All of these steps take up to 7-10 business days to complete.
`
`The current version of the Express Lane application is 3.1

`
`To facilitate the high speed upload of an asset, you must have the Aspera plug-in installed on your
`workstation. Aspera Connect is a web browser file transfer plug-in that allows the browser to take
`advantage of high speed file transfers. The download for the web browser plug-in can be found
`here - http://www.asperasoft.com/downloads/connect-win.html. If Express Lane does not detect this
`plug-in, a message will appear requiring you to download the plug-in. You must restart your
`browser after installing the plug-in.
`
`Note: If you are unable to download the Aspera plug-in, you may not have Administrator rights on
`your PC. Contact your system administrator to assist you.

`Create
`The Create button allows you to upload assets and distribute them to the desired locations. There
`are four selections on the Create screen:
`
`
` Upload and distribute an asset – this selection allows you to upload an asset and
`distribute an asset in one transaction. You need to know the location of the sites receiving
`the asset if you use this selection.
`
` Upload an asset – this selection allows you to upload an asset in anticipation of a future
`release without having to distribute the asset until you have determined when and where
`you would like to have the asset sent.
`
` Modify metadata of a non-distributed asset – this selection allows you to update the
`metadata for an asset that has been uploaded but not distributed. The status for these
`assets cannot be in a distributed status.
`
` Distribute an uploaded asset – this selection allows you to distribute an asset to the
`desired location(s) that has been previously uploaded.
`
` Batch Uploads – this selection allows you to upload multiple assets that are already
`encoded to VOD spec with the accompanying CL1.1 metadata.
`
` View Batch Upload Status – this selection allows you to determine the status of assets in
`a Batch.

`VOD Asset Information - page 1
`Follow the instructions below to complete page 1 for submitting metadata information to Express
`Lane. Verify the information you are entering is detailed enough and accurate as this will ensure
`that the asset you are submitting displays and performs properly on the receiving VOD system. All
`of the fields which are customer facing are indicated by the screen highlighting. These fields are
`Title, Title Brief, License Window Start, License Window End and Rating.

`
`
`1. Enter the Title of the asset. The title is the name of the VOD asset you are uploading (e.g.
`“The Titanic”). You may not use the same value for multiple assets or use all capitals. To
`compensate for the length, use common abbreviations, if needed. The maximum length of this
`field is 35 characters. (Required).
`
`2. Enter a brief version of the VOD asset title in the Title Brief field (e.g. “The Titanic”). The
`maximum length of this field is 19 characters. Special characters (i.e. double quotes “ “, title
`ending in a single quote or apostrophe ‘ ) are not allowed in this field. You may not use the
`same value for multiple assets or use all capitals. To compensate for the length, use common
`abbreviations, if needed. (Required).
`
`3. Enter a short summary of the asset into the Summary Short field. This is a sentence that
`provides a short summary of the VOD asset, usually typed in by the provider (e.g. “Fictional
`romantic tale of a rich girl and poor boy who meet on the ill-fated voyage of the „un-sinkable‟
`ship”). Spelling, grammar, and capitalization are important as the data typed here displays to
`the viewer. The maximum length of this field is 255 characters, including punctuation, spaces,
`alphanumeric and special characters. (Required).

`

`
`
`
`4. Enter the License Window Start. This defines the start date of the licensing window that the
`VOD asset will be available for viewing. You can either enter the date directly (e.g. “7/4/2009”)
`or use the calendar widget, which is located to the right of the field. This field assumes the start
`time is 00:00:01 of the day specified. Unless you have made arrangements beforehand, do not
`select a license window start date less than 24 hours less than your agreed upon delivery lead
`time. (Required).
`
`5. Enter the date that this asset will no longer be available for viewing in the License Window
`End field. You can either enter the date directly (e.g. “7/11/2009”) or use the calendar widget to
`the right of the field. This field assumes the start time is 23:59:59 of the day specified.
`(Required). Note: The content no longer displays on the user interface at 23:59:59 but if a user
`already viewed/purchased the asset, it remains available to that user only for 24 hours.
`Therefore, content rights need to be authorized up to 24 hours after the License End Date.
`
`6. Enter the duration of the run time in hours, minutes and/or seconds in the Duration
`(hh:mm:ss) fields (e.g. “03:14:05”). The format is in hours, minutes and seconds and is
`represented as total minutes on the VOD interface. (Required).
`
`7. Enter the Billing ID for this asset. The Billing ID is the content provider asset ID to tie into
`royalty reporting for PPV assets, assigned by a third party, TSQ. The Billing ID is defaulted to
`00000 (recommended for free assets), but can be changed (e.g. “12345”). The maximum
`number of characters allowed is 5. (Optional).
`
`8. Select the appropriate rating for the asset from the Rating drop down box. The Rating is the
`MPAA or TV Rating (e.g. “R”). NOTE: the MPAA ratings should only be used for MPAA rated
`content. (Required).
`
`9. Click the Back button to go back to the previous screen, if necessary or click the Next button to
`continue to the next screen.
