`(54) Title: CIGARE'ITE AND HEA'IB FOR USE IN AN ELECTRICAL SMOKING SYSTEM
`
`(57) Abstract
`
`A cigarenc (23) comprises a tobacco rod having filled and unfilled portions arranged so that electrical heater clements (31) may
`overlap both portions. The rod includes a tubular tobacco web. The web is conslJ'UCtcd by converting tobacco feedstock into a continuous
`sheet of tobacco web and converting the continuous sheet of tobacco web into one or ore bobbins of tobacco web suitable for automated
`manufacture of cigarettes. A heater (25) comprises a supporting hub and electrically resistive heater blades (37) defining a receptacle (27)
`for an inserted cigarette (23). Each blade comprises first and second heater blade legs each having a first end and a second end, and a
`connecting section connecting the second end of the first leg and the first end of the second leg. The blades (37) are heated by a resistive
`heating circuit and heat the inserted cigarette (23). The legs are separated by a gap to permit entrainment of flavour substances upon
`drawing.

`CIGARETTE AND HEATER FOR USE IN AN ELECTRICAL
`SMOKING SYSTEM
`
`The p=esent invention relates generally to electrical
`smoking sys:ems, and in particular to cigarettes adapted to
`cooperate with electrical lighters of electrical smoking
`sys:ems, an~ to a heater for use in elctrical smoking
`sysce:ns.

`cor.bustible material, principally tobacco, is combusted at
`te~pe=atu~es which often exceeds 800° C du~ing a ?~ff. ~ea~
`is drawn t~rough an adjace~t mass of tobacco by drawing on
`the mouth end. During heating, i~efficient oxidation of the
`co~~ustible material releases various gaseous corr~ustion

`produces are drawn tru:-oug~ the cigarette, they cool and
`condense to form an aerosol which provides the tastes and
`aromas associated with smoking.

`~raditional cigarettes have various perceived
`c.rawba:ks associated with them. One of these is t~e
`produc:ion of sidestream smoke during smoldering between
`puffs which may be objectionable to non-smokers. Once lit,
`they must be fully consumed or be discarded. Re-lighting a
`tradi:ional cigarette is possible but is usually an
`unat:ractive proposition to a discer:1ing smoker for
`subjec:ive reasons (flavor, taste, odor).
`A..~ alte::-native to the more traditional cigare::es
`inclu=es those in which the combustible material itse:: does
`not i:self release the tobacco aerosol. Such smoki~g
`artic:es may comprise a combustible, carbonaceous hea:ing
`eleme~: (~eat source) loca:ed at or about one e~d cf :~e
`smoki~g ar:icle and a bed of tobacco-laden ele~e~ts l=cated
`
`eleme~: is ig:iited with a match or cigarette lighter, and
`when a smoker draws upon the cigare::e, heat ge~eratec by
`the heating element is communicated to the bee of tobacco(cid:173)
`lade~ eleme~ts so as to cause the bed to release a totacco
`aerosol. While this type of smoking device produces :ittle
`or no sidestream smoke, it still generates proc~cts c:
`combus~ion ac the heat source, and once its hea: so~r=e is
`ignited, it is.not readily snuffed for future use i~ a
`pract:.=al sense.
`In both the more conventional and carbon heated
`devices described above, combustion takes place duri~; thei=
`use. This process naturally gives rise to many by-;r=cucts

`5,225,498, 5,060,571 and 5,095,921 disclose various heating

`arrangement of flow-through filter plugs at a mouthpiece end
`of the carrier and a filter plug at the free (distal) end of
`the carrier. The cigarette and the lighter are configured
`such that when the cigarette is inserted into the lighter
`and as individual heaters are activated for each puff,
`localized charring occurs at spots a.bout the cigarette in
`the locality where each heater was bearing against the
`cigare:te (hereinafter referred to as a •heater footprint#).
`Once all the heaters have been activated, these charred
`S?Ots are closely spaced from one a~other and encircle a
`central portion of the carrier por:ion of the cigarette.
`Depending on the maxim~~ temperatures and total

`The preferred embodiment of the cigarette of OS Ser.
`No. 08/380,718, EP-A-0,615,411 and Patent No. 5,388,594 is
`essentially a hollow tube between the filter plugs at the
`mouthpiece end of the cigarette ~~d the plug at the distal
`end. This construction is believed to elevate delivery to
`t~e smoker by providing sufficient space into which aerosol
`can evolve cff the carrier with minimal impinge~ent and
`condensation of the aerosol on any nearby surfaces.
`Several proposals have been advanced whic~
`significantly reduce undesired sidestream smoke while
`pe:::7.!itting the smoker to s~spend smoking of the article for
`a desired period and then to res~me smoking. For examp~e,
`commonly assigned U.S. Patent Nos. 5,093,894; 5,225,498;
