`Microsott Pocket Excel
`
`You can keep track of your expenses and perform other calcu-
`
`lations with Microsoft Pocket Excel. There are also a number of
`
`third-party software packages available for mobile devices.
`
`These will all allow you to synchronize with desktop applica-
`
`tions like Microsoft Money, Intuit’s Quicken or Quicken
`
`Expensable.
`
`Pocket Excel has the look and feel of the desktop version — the
`
`formulas work in the same way and it has the most commonly
`
`used features, including over 100 functions.
`
`Creating an Excel workbook
`
`The example below is for Fraser’s Monitor Shop, which sells
`
`computer monitors and LCD flat panels of various shapes and
`
`sizes. The spreadsheet is used to let him see at a glance how
`many monitors and LCD flat panels people have on order and
`
`when his customers can expect to receive them.

`Pocket Finance
`
`Anyware Consulting Inc. has produced Pocket Finance for both
`the Handheld and Palm-size PCs. Its features list includes the
`ability to import and export your data with desktop applications
`
`such as Microsoft Money and Intuit Quicken as well as allowing
`
`you to have multiple accounts. You can even create an unlim—
`
`ited number of separate accounts — I create a new account for
`
`each trip to help separate my expenses. Multiple folders and ‘
`
`split expense types are also supported.
`
`The user interface on Pocket Finance is clear and easy to use. It
`
`features quick and detailed methods of entering each expense,
`
`including a toolbar button, which opens a data entry panel to
`
`enter your expense details. It also has a handy icon to bring up
`the Windows CE calculator.

`Have you ever been in a restaurant where a large group of you

`
`Ilium software has created this application for a quick and easy
`
`way to split the bill at ways (for instance at a restaurant). It also
`
`easily calculates the amount for the tip.
`
`It’s nicely customizable and very simply to use. There are
`versions available for the Handheld PC and the Palm—size PC,
`
`I’ve shown the Handheld PC version here, with the Configure

`
`
`Storing and securing data
`
`While I showed you how to password protect your device.
`
`spreadsheets and Pocket Word documents in earlier chapters,
`
`there is a lot of information that you may normally carry around
`
`with you in your wallet or purse that you‘d like to store in your
`Windows CE device.
`
`The built-in applications don’t offer many features to store
`
`password-protected entries for specific data, but some vendors
`
`have produced applications that are depositories for miscella-
`
`neous but still very important data.
`
`eWollet
`
`eWallet from Ilium Software is marketed as an Electronic
`
`Wallet. It supports such features as password protecting sec«
`
`tions. hidelshow pin numbers on card details, as well as stan-
`
`dard cards for common activities, and free-form cards so you
`
`can enter any details you want.
`
`eWallet has many features including the ability to search for
`
`information stored in the wallet. You can also change how the
`
`card is displayed. either on the left or the right.
`
`When you lock the wallet by pressing the Lock Icon, any
`
`sections that you have password protected will need the pass—
`
`word entered before you can view the information.

`
`Iuse eWallet to store all the pieces of information I used to store
`
`on scraps of paper or on cards in my wallet. Some of the
`
`information I store in eWallet include details of my telephone
`
`calling card, how to access work’s voice mail, medical num—
`
`bers, emergency numbers to call if I lose my credit cards and
`
`other such details. I even keep the numbers of local taxis,
`restaurants and favorite wine bars.
`
`QuickWollei
`
`Applian Technologies has created QuickWallet, a product
`
`conceptually similar to Ilium’s eWallet, in that information is
`
`stored on cards, organized into sections and categories.
`
`QuickWallet has the ability to have information password
`
`protected. Its major differences from eWallet are that its buttons
`
`for finding information are very large, so it’s possible to
`
`navigate really quickly (even without using the stylus). It’s also
`
`possible to keep track of images, audio files and telephone
`
`numbers from within QuickWallet. If you store phone numbers
`
`in the application you can even get your mobile device to dial
`
`the numbers for you — just hold up the speaker to a phone and
`
`it dials! The application uses multiple levels for sections, and
`
`then cards, allowing you to store a lot of information and
`
`retrieve it quickly and easily. QuickWallet is available on both
`Handheld and Palmisize PCs.
