`POINTCAST NETWORK Screen saver provides a world of information News, weather, stock quotes
`can be displayed: [All Edition]
`
`Brown, Judy.Milwaukee Journal Sentinel; Milwaukee, Wis. [Milwaukee, Wis]18 Mar 1996: 10.
`
`Abstract
`
`PCN runs in the background and collects the information free of charge. For users with permanent Internet connections, the update frequency can be defined. PCN also works
`with dial-up Internet connections.
`
`When the computer is idle, PCN acts as a screen saver displaying the latest selected information.
`
`PCN currently requires an IBM compatible computer with a minimum 486/33 or faster processor, 8MB memory, 10 MB free disk space and 256 color or higher video mode. PCN
`works with local Internet providers, CompuServe, America Online and Microsoft Network.

`
`The e-mail message suggested that I check out http://www.pointcast.com for a news service/horoscope/screensaver.
`
`Huh?
`
`The last thing I needed was another screen saver. I'd tried them all from flying toasters to Dilbert. Eventually, they all ended up in the trash heap. The default screen blanker
`still worked just fine, thank you.
`
`If the message hadn't come from a friend whose opinions I respect, I probably would have ignoredit.
`
`Glad I didn't.
`
`PointCast Network, from PointCast Inc., Cupertino, Calif., turned out to be a great idea. It's a Windowsapplication working in conjunction with the Internet. Macintosh,
`WindowsNTand Unix versions are under development and a Netscape Navigator 2.0 plug-in application should be released in April.

`
`To use PCN, you must download the free software currently Beta version 0.9 for Windows from the Web site. Then you can personalize it to provide continuous information
`from six "channels."
`
`These include breaking news, stock quotes, weather, sports, industry data and lifestyles. Here's a look:
`
`Headlines from Reuters are displayed on national, international, political and business news. Complete stories are only a mouseclick away.
`
`Six weeks of stock prices and volume data along with recent news on up to 25 companiesare available. A scrolling ticker along the bottom of the screen displays the latest
`stock prices for selected companies.
`
`Accu-Weather temperatures and precipitation are indicated for cities of interest. Satellite images, radar maps and national weather mapsalsoare available.
`
`An ESPN SportsTicker displays scores and schedules for selected sports events.
`
`Newsand information is retrieved for selected industries such as advertising, banking and finance, health care, publishing or utilities. Market indexes can be scrolled across the
`bottom of the screen.
`
`Entertainment news, daily horoscopes or winning state lottery numbersalso are an option.
`
`An Internet Web browser is included.
`
`PCN runs in the background and collects the information free of charge. For users with permanent Internet connections, the update frequency can be defined. PCN also works
`with dial-up Internet connections.
`
`When the computer is idle, PCN acts as a screen saver displaying the latest selected information.
`
`The user interface is well-designed and a joy to use.
`
`PCN currently requires an IBM compatible computer with a minimum 486/33 or faster processor, 8MB memory, 10 MB free disk space and 256 color or higher video mode. PCN
`works with local Internet providers, CompuServe, America Online and Microsoft Network.
`
`No chargesare planned for the service with costs born by advertisers. Initial advertisers include 20th Century Fox Film Corp., Saturn Corp., Electronic Data Systems, Fidelity
`Investments, Prodigy and Quarterdeck Corp.
`
`On Feb. 8, more than 1,000 photographers captured images and stories of how people are using the Internet and howit is changing the world. The goal of "24 Hours in
`Cyberspace" was to create a "digital time capsule."
`
`Sunday night, the permanent "24 Hours in Cyberspace" Web site was released at http://www.cyber24.com with 50 stories. Each week for the remainder of the year, five more
`stories will be added. A book and CD also are scheduled for November.
`
`During the original 24-hour period, 63 stories were published, representing about 10% of those collected from the professional team. In addition, thousands of students and
`amateurs from around the world made submissions.
